No you have it absolutely right. NZ is a strange country, being small and far from everyone, you end up with the extremes of politics I think and a hypocritical environment where we are considered progressive but in many ways are still extremely old fashioned- abortion is still a crime despite women being able to have them ( hundreds are denied every year too ).

SoftDay · 18/07/2019 07:41

That thread by the NZ rugby player, Dan Leo, is illuminating. There's a male-bodied trans person T%RFing at women all over it, ridiculing the notion that there is any unfairness here. The usual sneering misogyny.

Yet this individual has an exchange with Leo which is a masterclass in respectful dialogue. Our T%RF-ejaculating friend even offers to buy Leo a drink!! Seems this person can tell the difference between men and women when it comes to whom a Brave&Stunning should be afeard of and whom it is fine to insult and dismiss.

So did Dan call him out for talking to women like that?

Not likely, right?

Popchyk · 18/07/2019 08:50

The story seems to be getting traction.

Titania McGrath tweets:

"If trans athletes are so bad for women’s sports, why is it that more records are being broken than ever before?"

twitter.com/TitaniaMcGrath/status/1151660407293120514

Also Hadley Freeman commenting:

"It’s not really surprising that those who insist biological sex doesn’t matter in sport have been staying notably quiet during this whole Laurel Hubbard palaver. Because it so clearly does matter".

"Anyone arguing Hubbard’s victory is a win for diversity should consider this: Hubbard, 41, comes from a hugely wealthy white family. The competitor who she beat, Feagaiga Stowers, 18, is a woman of colour and survivor of sexual abuse. So save the triumph over adversity lectures".

Zuby has tweeted about it too :)

Jessica, no, indeed he did not. Sad

I always enjoy your posts, and they have been especially informative on this thread. Thank you. Flowers

Popchyk · 18/07/2019 09:05

Zuby and Hubbard should do a "lift off" challenge.

Best woman wins.

I'd pay to see that.

Maybe they could both make a special appearance at the next Fair Play for Women meeting? It would make a change from the speeches. Mix it up a bit.

Make. it. happen.

Still waiting for TRA justification of how Hubbard's second sporting career - amongst the OPPOSITE SEX - is so brave & stunning?..... Hmm Hmm Hmm Hmm

JessicaWakefieldSV · 18/07/2019 09:14

SoftDay

You’re welcome.

While I think it’s great to see anyone calling this out, let’s be observant too. That Dan is calling out men for not speaking out, while another man he’s corresponding with on that thread abuses women while he says nothing about it, is quite revealing to me.

Dan, if you’re going to frame this as you, as a man, standing up for women, you need to do better.

GirlDownUnder · 18/07/2019 09:19

Jessica .... I always enjoy your posts, and they have been especially informative on this thread. Thank you.

Seconded. You must get so frustrated but your posts are always clear and I've learned a lot.

JessicaWakefieldSV · 18/07/2019 09:27

GirlDownUnder

Aww thanks! Yeah it is frustrating. Very! Kiwi and Polynesian men, Dan was born and raised in NZ to Samoan parents, are incredibly frustrating as they’ve been raised in one of the most misogynistic cultures you can imagine. I don’t think Dan wants women to be unfairly disadvantaged, but he will pick and choose what he says and when he’ll defend us- as his own twitter thread shows. You have to be careful of men like this. They love to virtue signal- rugby is full of them doing that over Israel Folau right now, as they stay silent about the actual abusers. NZ prides itself on being a progressive, friendly and welcoming society. It’s a lie. Men like Dan are propping up that lie. We top the world in all kinds of harmful stats, and here we are also leading the way for transgender in women’s sports. I believe that officially NZR allows trans to play in their preferred sex category in rugby, but don’t quote me. I’ll try and find out actually...

Popchyk · 18/07/2019 11:33

The Samoan Prime Minister is a TERF, apparently.

"No matter how we look at it, he’s a man and it’s shocking this was allowed in the first place”

Popchyk · 18/07/2019 11:37

The Samoan PM tries to come up with a solution.

"He said there should be an additional category for the third and fourth genders. Tuilaepa said these categories should be called the "transgender" and "tomboy."

2019 feels like what would happen if George Orwell and Terry Pratchett ever got together to co-author a book.

JessicaWakefieldSV · 18/07/2019 11:56

Well, after the way Stuart Barnes from The Times talked about the Pacific islands recently, I dread to think what western media might say to this. I actually complained to The Times got a complaint number and they kept saying they didn’t receive my complaint. Stuart Barnes was awful. He referred to the Pacific islands as some backward archaic place, he used the word archaic, and said westerners took religion to them, we moved on through education, but they didn’t... it was bloody awful. Over the Israel Folau thing.

JessicaWakefieldSV · 18/07/2019 16:26

Ok so re Jaiyah Selau, update, my first cautious approach was warranted:

"No matter how we look at it, he’s a man and it’s shocking this was allowed in the first place”

Which just sums it up really.

I've been watching a 4 part documentary on Amazon about Oscar Pistorius. The first episode covers his youth and sporting career, lots of footage about the controversy surrounding him trying to gain entry to the able bodied Olympics.

Not being much of a sports fan I didn't take much notice at the time this was happening but it seems he was put through so many tests by the IAAF. There was so much angst that this singular, lone athlete might have some unfair advantage that maximum effort was put in to protect the other athletes against this being the case.

Fast forward to 2019 and it seems that any old dick can use advantage to wreck women's sporting careers and most sporting bodies don't give even the tiniest fuck about it.

FermatsTheorem · 18/07/2019 18:45

Ok so re Jaiyah Selau, update, my first cautious approach was warranted:

That's very disappointing. I very much admired the stance Saelua took back in 2014 - play men's football as a transwoman. I thought that was principled.

JellySlice · 18/07/2019 20:19

JessicaWakefieldSV · 19/07/2019 08:59

FermatsTheorem

It is disappointing, yes. I do wonder if this somewhat conflicting position occurred after she moved away from Samoa? In Samoa Fa’afafine do not take drugs or have surgery, it’s very different to transgenderism. So maybe they have been influenced by new ideology once they moved? Either way it makes no sense.

This is a new article, I haven’t read every word yet and the use of cis is annoying, but this researcher answers lots of questions. I’ll start a thread so it doesn’t get lost.

i.stuff.co.nz/sport/other-sports/114327152/even-before-birth-genetic-building-blocks-are-giving-athletes-born-male-a-massive-advantage-over-females

TemporaryPermanent · 21/07/2019 15:29

Good article Jessica though challenging for me because of the 'testosterone equals male behaviour' section. Good to have my views challenged and not just confirmed.

But really the 'bear shits in woods shock' of the sports issue in terms of genetic male advantage over female, and the way it fundamentally undermines genderism, is interesting.
