Otepoti and I completely agree with all of the comments. Laurel Hubbard should not have been allowed to compete in the women's weightlifting competition. The young women who participated must have known their chances of a Gold medal, not to mention Silver had gone. I honestly don't know how Hubbard can stand on the Podium and not feel ashamed, I don't care about the reasons why he wanted to turn himself into a facsimile of a woman, to take away the hopes and dreams of these young women is outrageous. And that goes for all transgender male to female athletes.

SummerPlace · 14/07/2019 06:30

@GirlDownUnder Last year I saw Lisa Curry (I am embarrassed to say that I think it was on Australian Survivor) crying because she lost out on a medal at the Olympics because whatever the event was was won an East German swimmer who had been subjected to doping and curry came in 4th.

Even 30 years later, the memory still made her distraught.

MrsJamin · 14/07/2019 06:50

To the person who asked why McKinnon and Hubbard don't feel shame to stand at the top of the podium, I think it's about the ultimate official validation of their "identity" as a woman. Nz sports are admitting by deleting those tweets that they are ashamed of Hubbard.
I really hope something changes before the Olympics but I don't see how they have enough time to change the rules for qualification even if they wanted to.

MrsJamin · 14/07/2019 06:56

Of course it would make you distraught, losing out on a medal. These athletes don't just devote time energy and money to their sport, they prioritise training above most other things in their lives, like friendships, relationships, having a family, other interests, academic or career progression. The reward for putting those things to one side was just not enough if they didn't get a medal, and they could be left with massive amounts of regret and grief for what they chose to forgo just so they had a chance at a medal. It must be heartbreaking.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 14/07/2019 08:01

The opportunities which are missed too - on the Women's Place thread someone commented about Sharron Davies would have been a Dame if she'd won. She was beaten by someone who was doping.

It's true.

The woman Laurel beat won in sydney when Laurel's elbow was injured. She wa 17 and had got into weight lifting in a refuge, used it to deal with her anger caused by being sexually assaulted.

She's an amazing role model! She said she never expected to be able to travel, she's from a background which lacks opportunity. Through horrific circumstances she found her niche, her talent and she had the opportunity to use that to demonstrate to other young women that life gets better, you don't need to put up with it.

But, no. NZ sports and the IOC allow her sporting career to be fucked over by a man.

Irony is not nice.

Lordamighty · 14/07/2019 08:10

From Twitter before the deletions,

Laurel Hubbard wins gold
JessicaWakefieldSV · 14/07/2019 08:30

It’s not the first time NZ has fucked over indigenous and other Polynesians in sport. Although usually we just like to lure their people away so they have no chance at success as a nation, but this is next level theft as far as I’m concerned.

Where is darling Jacinda Ardern now? She’s no feminist is she.

frazzled1 · 14/07/2019 08:59

The silence is DEAFENING.

Still waiting to hear from TRAs / NZ Olympics exactly HOW this is fair - 41 year old MtF transperson, competed for many years for NZ AS A MAN, now competes and wins 'as a woman' .

Laurel Hubbard wins gold

In what way are they a woman?

How come nz Olympic deleted the tweets and pictures

Did it embarrass them ?

Or did they want to get rid of all the comments

JessicaWakefieldSV · 14/07/2019 09:27

Damn they deleted the tweets. Someone should of asked them if it would be fair for Kieran Read or Karl Tu’inukuafae to transition tomorrow and join the black ferns for a bit of rugby? Two of the biggest guys in the men’s rugby team... No? Imagine if they start allowing this in rugby or other similar sports where the result would be more than women missing their rightful medals, but them ending up severely injured or worse ( deaths in rugby isn’t exactly rare as it is ).

FormerMediocreMale · 14/07/2019 09:45

They deleted the tweets but I bet they still let them participate in the women's category.

If they try and keep the person's "successes" as hushed up as possible in future tHEy won't be happy though Grin

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 14/07/2019 09:50

I feel sorry for family. If that was my sibling I would by dying of shame. And to have to plaster on a smile and say ‘well done sweetie’ 👎🏻

Although in my family we are a bit more robust ‘fekkosBRO ya cheating wee shite ya.’

Popchyk · 14/07/2019 10:01

I think the family background gives some clues.

Dick Hubbard (the father) was Mayor of Auckland and notoriously homophobic. He publicly stated that the children of gay couples were more likely to be victims of abuse and murder.

www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=9002553

Late transitioners are often from conservative backgrounds where strict gender roles and homophobia are common.

Juells · 14/07/2019 10:03

Scott72
because of female athletes with intersex characteristics, such as Caster Semenya.

I'm not sure that's an accurate description of CS - isn't that what the whole furore has been about?

NotBadConsidering · 14/07/2019 10:31

No, Caster Semenya is male with 5 alpha reductase deficiency.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 14/07/2019 10:37

I read that if CS had been born in a country where they would have been scanned and investigated as a newborn, then they would have been brought up a male.

S1naidSucks · 14/07/2019 10:52

Those are some of the biggest, most muscular women you’re ever likely to meet and they look tiny beside Hubbard. Are these the particularly tall, strong women that those that support this kind of nonsense in sport keep going on about? You know the way they’re always bleating ‘well SOME women are bigger, taller, stronger than typical women so it’s only fair that trans(I’m not giving them MY descriptor) are included.”

There! Look! Those are the women that do not have a typical women’s strength, etc and they still can’t win against a biological male who identifies as trans. It just show what a load of shit your excuses are!

NotBadConsidering · 14/07/2019 10:53

Lord

Babies with 5-ARD can have a very variable newborn presentation, so that’s not necessarily true. I think what is true is that is Semenya had even been not poor in South Africa a complete lack of periods at the age of 15-16 would have definitely been investigated. To be honest, we don’t know it wasn’t. It’s unlikely though, given no one identified the issue before the IAAF testing at 18-19.

Boom25 · 14/07/2019 10:59

I read that if CS had been born in a country where they would have been scanned and investigated as a newborn, then they would have been brought up a male.

That is quite probably true. Because the only symptom of a male being born with 5ARD is ambiguous secondary sex characteristics aka genitalia, which would be investigated in modern hospitals with sex phenotyping being done almost immediately to determine what sex
chromosomes were present. Its possible for the ambiguity to be very, very slightly different from standard female in which case it could escape notice of health professionals or the parents, but it would certainly show up at puberty when the child both didnt start periods and also started to go through male puberty and develop charactetistic musculature and body hair.

terfsandwich · 14/07/2019 11:46

This is all so intersectional.

CarolDanvers · 14/07/2019 11:53

This is actually is making me cry tears of pure rage. The cheating fucker, the cheating fucker and all those fuckers who are allowing it to happen.

Popchyk · 14/07/2019 11:56

It really is so intersectional.

The most oppressed woman (the rich, white male) triumphs over the poorer women of colour.

Having used their riches to buy a weightlifting facility, sponsor the Olympic Weightlifting NZ body, and then hire expensive lawyers to hide their criminal acts in the media, it really does bring a tear to the eye, doesn't it?

To see the system working so perfectly for the person who self-defines as the most oppressed woman.

JessicaWakefieldSV · 14/07/2019 12:07

Oh my actual god. I did not know Dick Hubbard was their father! How did I not know that?! ( I’m kiwi ). Jfc that explains a lot.

This specific issue, is a case of sexism and racism overlapping, both are pretty rife in NZ, particularly sport.

I’d like to remind everyone, because I think it’s relevant, that in Samoa it is still illegal for males to engage in gay sex, Fa’afafine has its roots in homophobia ( they are almost always M to F ). Those women dropping their heads at the injustice, will have had a lifetime of it both in their homeland and in the stolen lands of NZ.
