Barrister Sarah Phillimore and the NSPCC

christinarossetti19 · 14/06/2019 21:56

Sarah Phillimore has reported the NSPCC to the charities commission, as they refused to confirm that either the allegations made about wanking@work are false or that they are investigating matter.

As she says, this is another Oxfam or Kids Company waiting to happen. Thank you Sarah for devoting your expertise to this.

Spero thank you - you also have my wholehearted support, and in due course will contribute to any crowdfunder. You are also restoring my faith in humanity a little.

The NSPCC is failing children.

I wonder, given their incredibly poor response to safeguarding concerns about the alleged behaviour of their employee, their refusal to investigate and the implication that raising safeguarding concerns around the alleged behaviour (creating porn in NSPCC toilets) is bigoted, would they behave in the same way if such it was alleged such behaviour was carried out by employees working on childline? Just one of the many questions I've been asking myself about the NSPCC recently.

OvaHere · 17/06/2019 17:01

Another one who will contribute. I am appalled with the NSPCC. Thank you Spero.

hoodathunkit · 17/06/2019 17:07

Spero

I am sadly unable to contribute financially as I have spent many years working flat out unpaid, however if I can help in any other way let me know.

I have a huge database of information that is relevant to this battle, decades of personal experience and I work well as an ancillary mind

:)

Throckmorton · 17/06/2019 17:24

Spero, you are an absolute shining star in a very dark time. I am absolutely in on the crowdfunder

Spero · 17/06/2019 17:38

Thank you again all. Its very heartening to think that there is so much support. Any one with useful information please do let me know. I am interested in examples of others who have had their concerns brushed off, particularly if that has happened in context of concerns being labelled 'bigotry' or otherwise inappropriate etc, etc.

LangCleg · 17/06/2019 17:47

Spero - it might be worth reading the threads here about NSPCC cancelling a webchat when they realised awkward questions about safeguarding were going to be asked. No notice given: they simply didn't show. There are reams of posts to struggle through but here are some of the threads.

And here's one from when they misrepresented EqA:

Greyhoundsaregreyt · 17/06/2019 17:49

I’m in for the crowd funder.

Natsku · 17/06/2019 18:49

Thank you for doing this spero the shero, will chip in for the crowdfunder

missedith01 · 17/06/2019 19:46

Will chip in when asked. A legal action may not result in a victory, but worthwhile if it NSPCC has to come out and justify themselves.

Cuntysnark · 17/06/2019 20:27

I’m prepared to chip in too. I can’t believe it’s not headline news!

AnyFucker · 17/06/2019 20:51

@Spero please could you repost here as and when the crowdfunder is live

Some of us don't use Twitter. Interestingly enough, I left that platform because of John Hemming and his fucking hench crew

MsJeminaPuddleduck · 17/06/2019 21:17

Spero - thank you for doing this. Count me in too. I'll add a note to my diary to check back on 15th July

EarlyModernParent · 17/06/2019 22:05

Wish I could say I was surprised by the NSPCC, but I am not. There has long been a gap between reputation and reality there.

christinarossetti19 · 17/06/2019 23:06

I think the NSPCC have taken down their 'our people are our priority... back off bullies...everyone pile in' tweet about the JM situation, or maybe I just can't see it.

Lots of reference to helping children talk about their gender identity, referencing Stonewall further down, and an Esther Rantzen piece.

Which is more than a bit ironic as she's fully aware that scores of adults turning a blind eye, elevating Jimmy Savile to saint like status and ignoring reports from children is exactly how he hid in plain site abusing hundreds of children for decades.

Thank you @Spero I will chip in. We're right behind you.

Popchyk · 18/06/2019 09:53

Statement still there on Twitter.

The issue now is that the NSPCC thinks that it owes the trans activists because of this mess. Having canned Bergdorf in a blundering way, they now feel that they have to make it up to "community". Which was precisely the point of the pile-on in the first place. They will also want to appease the staff who signed that letter in support of Bergdorf. Some of the staff will have signed that letter in order to try to get leverage over the NSPCC.

No doubt they will now be under pressure to appoint a Trans Advisory Board or similar at NSPCC. And also under pressure to ignore the implications of their already stated belief that children become the other sex because they say so and that there are absolutely no safeguarding implications within that. They don't want to be seen as transphobic so they'll back off anything that would be interpreted as transphobic (which is everything in child protection) . The NSPCC has been groomed. Clearly.

And the NSPCC is stupid enough to cave in to those demands. And not do any due diligence on the characters that they allow into the tent.

This is insidious stuff.

KatvonHostileExtremist · 18/06/2019 10:13

Thank you spero
It's a relief that someone is willing to shine a light on this. The press being frightened is shocking.

I'm in for the crowdfunder

Spero · 18/06/2019 11:00

Thanks all
@anyfucker - will do. I have been told it is against the mumsnet rules to post link to crowdfunded here (?!?!) but when its up I will make it a link in a pinned tweet so you would be able to find it easily at @SVPhillimore. I certainly do NOT criticise anyone who doesn't use Twitter; its dark side is dark indeed but I have found it a good way of getting connected with people I might not otherwise have met (this is not always of course a good thing...)

i will set up a Facebook group as well; I will be explicit about my motivations as I always am. The aim here is to raise a lot of money very quickly and then it MUST become a story. I am not naive enough to think any legal action with 'fix' this or even be successful, but if it is the only way to force an adult and honest debate then I think we have to do it.

If legal action doesn't follow the crowdfunder then I will either reimburse people's donations or give them to a children's charity OTHER than the NSPCC.

I will set this all out absolutely clearly so no one will feel mislead or duped into donating.

boatyardblues · 18/06/2019 11:57

If you are able to set one up, I think that Crowd Justice (or whatever its called, where fees go direct to a legal firm engaged to fight the case) orovides a degree of assurance for those donating and cover/protection for the person leading the charge (against smears about how funding is being used).

Spero · 18/06/2019 12:13

Yes, spoken to a few people now who confirm crowd justice is the way to go as I won't be touching the money at all. I don't know where there puts me in terms of refunds etc but I will investigate that. If I can't refund money I will say but I assume we must be able to have an alternative destination for funds (other than my pocket!) if legal action doesn't pan out.

BoreOfWhabylon · 18/06/2019 13:24

I think with CrowdJustice the donations are only taken once the target amount is reached.

Needmoresleep · 18/06/2019 13:32

With HarrytheOwl's crowd justice the money was not taken until the initial target had been met.

It might be worth talking (via DM on Twitter or here) to him. He seems to have gone for a target - the minimum needed to get something worthwhile going, and then a stretch target, which is currently open and which I guess will kick in if his action progresses.

His got off to a slow start and I noticed mention of possible poor timing, re end of the month and pay day. He also got a, presumably unasked for, boost when some right wing YouTuber, picked his fundraiser up on the free speech angle and odd comments started appearing from far corners of the globe. (Though most seemed to be £10 here and there from ordinary people.)

I guess - I am no expert - that it might need a few people with a lot of followers retweeting. Glinner is an obvious one. Caro? FPFW? Transgender Trend? Some child protection specialists, since it is more about that than about Gender Recognition? Who knows you might be lucky and some LGBTQK+s and others start complaining and you end with free publicity.

I dont go there, but possibly Reddit?

LangCleg · 18/06/2019 13:33

That reminds me... I was going to start a thread in Site Stuff asking if CrowdJustice links could be shared, since the cash goes straight to a solicitor, so can't be used against purpose.

LangCleg · 18/06/2019 13:34

I think with CrowdJustice the donations are only taken once the target amount is reached.

Yes. Set a low target. Once reached, I believe the stretch targets are ongoing.
