Brave listener Juliet went on James’ show and talked about the cotton ceiling, the pressure on lesbians to give up their boundaries and the male violence that accompanies all of this.

During the discussion, James said he wouldn’t fancy a woman with a penis and thought it was unbelievable (though he believed her) that women would get shit for feeling the same.

Worth a listen here:

Interestingly, James has yet to be inundated with accusations of being a terf, nazi or literal killer of trans people Hmm

What really pisses me off is the O’Brian is so sound on so many things. He’s really good at calling people to account and demanding evidence

He's probably doesn't want to talk about penis surgery. I doubt he wants to think about it let alone talk about it.

FloralBunting · 08/06/2019 11:25

I genuinely think this is one of the reasons the AWAs have such an easy ride among lots of male commentators, journalists, MPs etc. Men are so penis centred and addressing the keeping/removing of a penis and what that means is so psychologically difficult for them that they simply dont want to examine it to closely.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 08/06/2019 11:33

I think he is on the slopes. He's retweeted this too: twitter.com/helenlewis/status/1136996623530233856

His interview with Paris Lees was bizarre-not his usual style at all.

Paris Lees is very effective at manipulating.
Seems especially effective with male journalists.

When Paris Lees does not get exactly what they expect, things escalate pretty quickly.

see Nick Robinson's R4 'Political Thinking' interview for what happens when Lees can't control the discussion:
www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p05xp3z2

There are clear patterns.

Definite castration anxiety.

ThePurportedDoctoress · 08/06/2019 12:50

I noticed James referred more than once to pre op

Yep, and he totally missed the point Juliet made - lesbians are attracted to female bodies. He might think a pair of fake boobs and something resembling a vagina is enough to turn a male body into a female one for his own, um, purposes, but he can't dictate to women about what constitutes a female body.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 08/06/2019 13:05

That's the interesting thing to me about MB's underwear modelling images.

That does not look to me like a female body, not at all.

MB is surgically altered, lit, made up, posed, waxed and photo shopped and still looks to me like what MB is - a male person.

I think heterosexual males see mainly boobs and what I see are shoulders, hands and no waist, a wholly male shape, and then I notice the boobs, which I automatically, without thinking, assess as not-real.

There is no mistaking their sex for me, not at all.

theytheywho · 08/06/2019 13:10

His interview with Paris Lees reminded me of Kevin the Teenager in front of his female teacher at parents’ night. It was SO untypical of him. I’m sure Paris loved it.

BertrandRussell · 08/06/2019 13:14

I wonder whether he’s rethinking a bit as his daughters get older. He was very interesting talking about his road to Damascus conversion about abortion.

R0wantrees · 08/06/2019 13:16

Its always interesting when someone finds themselves responding completely out of their usual patterns. Should cause both them & others to consider the possible patterns of behaviour by the person elucidating the response.

R0wantrees · 08/06/2019 13:18

Was it Jame O'Brien who also talked about being really influenced by an interview with Owl?

(Its a distant memory from last year so not sure)

Outofinspiration · 08/06/2019 13:23

Lol at 'woman with a pen'!

Oh dear, BFF Paris isn't going to be happy with James...

The thing is JOB may be woke as fuck, but he isn't stupid, and he is realising that he was very quickly coming across as a raging misogynist and is going to have to pick a side to come down on.

Outofinspiration · 08/06/2019 13:25

He said that he wouldn't fancy a woman with a penis and knows that this means that he can't force women to accept women with penises in their spaces as well.

I think having his daughters is probably influencing this as well.

Deliriumoftheendless · 08/06/2019 13:40

Plenty of men have had sex with blow up dolls making O face so I reckon there’s a percentage of them have a very low bar for what makes a woman.

Deliriumoftheendless · 08/06/2019 13:41

That comment isn’t suggesting anything about transwomen, just about men men.

Outofinspiration · 08/06/2019 13:54

Have listened to it now.

What a difference to last year when the lady from here (was it Posie or was it someone else?) went on and he gave her shit for not wanting to share a changing room with a transwoman...

As an aside, whilst I do agree wrib JOB on a lot of things, Jesus, that slow paced, smug, consistently outraged voice he uses all the time - so annoying!

Juliet, if you are on here, you're a legend, thank you 😘

Datun · 08/06/2019 13:55

This is James O'Brian who thinks that women are bigots for not wanting to get changed in a cubical next to him?

Yes, he was outraged that Posie didn't make a massive, inexplicable exception for him. Whilst at the same time claiming there is no way he would send his daughters into the male changing room, or even, I believe, to change by themselves.

I don't listen to him, but he comes across as as highly sexist in these instances, which is why he doesn't get the issues. Until they affect his own personal property.

Is he the one who, after speaking to Posie, spoke to a transwoman, and gave them triple the air time? His unconscious bias showing.

Fallingirl · 08/06/2019 14:17

This, and plenty of men are so penis centred they cannot, and will not, see a man without a penis as a man.

And they still divide the world into ‘men’ and ‘non-men’, and a person without a penis is in their view a non-man, which they colloquially refer to as ‘women’.

A large proportion of men have never thought the term ‘woman’ actually had any meaning or content in its own right, to too many men, it only ever meant ‘non-man’.

WeWantJustice · 08/06/2019 18:52

Too right. They still see men as the default human with everyone else an also-ran.

BickerinBrattle · 08/06/2019 19:15

I listened, and I think what got to James was Juliet's fright in speaking. He's a man and he heard a woman afraid, in real fear, so much that she was having trouble even breathing. He reacted out of paternalism.

He doesn't respond with a listening ear to female voices he'd call "strident." But trembling ones he does listen to.

This is the violin string TRAs have played: oooh we're so vulnerable, we can't even step outside without being beaten, all we want to do is peeeeee and we're even being denied that!

That vulnerability is now being shown to be a lie by their own violence and aggression.

happydappy2 · 08/06/2019 19:46

That Paris Lees interview with Nick can now very clearly be seen as the straw man argument....Paris claims that in the future this will just be dealt with as a pedriatic issue...no no no, we need this discussion taken away from children all together. There are no trans children, only children being transed.
Paris clearly had a shite start in life but that does not make them a woman.

ThePurportedDoctoress · 08/06/2019 22:54

James said he's going to look up Julie Bindel. He could start with this piece by JB about Janice Raymond's 1979 book The Transsexual Empire:
unherd.com/2019/04/the-transsexual-empire/

One of Raymond’s transsexual interviewees, quoted in TTE, proclaimed: “Genetic women are becoming quite obsolete, which is obvious, and the future belongs to transsexual women. All you have left is your ability to bear children, and in a world which will groan to feed 6 billion by the year 2000, that’s a negative asset.”

Recently published research on the ‘cotton ceiling’ phenomenon found that significant numbers of lesbians have encountered bullying and sexual harassment by ‘trans lesbians’.Reading the chapter, “Sappho By Surgery”, it’s hard not to think [Raymond] must have a time machine: she writes that men who asserted they were women would also claim to be ‘trans lesbians’ and expect access to natal women’s bodies.

callmekalinda · 08/06/2019 23:16

At 2.38, it sounds like he says, "I did say we weren't going to touch on trans issues". He wasn't expecting, and had specifically sanctioned against this type of discussion. He only allowed it because to do otherwise would have made him the aggressor against a lesbian in distress. His final words about transpeople being also victimised puts him back on the fence, where he will sit until this all plays out, when women have done the hard yards and either won or lost the fight. Then he will claim that he was on the right side of history all along.

LangCleg · 08/06/2019 23:19

Until they affect his own personal property.

He reacted out of paternalism.

Nailed it.

Hirsutefirs · 08/06/2019 23:30

Shouldn’t be a problem. There isn’t a woman with a penis.
