Advise your children to call Samaritans if they need someone to talk to.

I’ve long since given up on everyone else. I give my dd leaflets to put in lockers and leave around school for her peers.

from the thread linked above discussing Dr Julia Long's Safeguarding question & Munroe Bergdorf's response, LangCleg wrote:

"How did the scandal of TV entertainers grooming and exploiting children get so bad before anything was done?

How did the scandal of Catholic priests grooming and exploiting children get so bad before anything was done?

How did the scandal of on-street gangs grooming and exploiting children get so bad before anything was done?

Because if you create a sacred caste of any group and silence anyone asking questions about individuals on behalf of the sacred caste, abusers will see, infiltrate, and groom and exploit children. That''s how."

Does Childline know any of the past things Munroe has said? Or do they just not care in the race to be inclusive?

It would have taken them approximately four seconds of googling to turn up Munroe's past history of unsavoury comments about gay people. So one can safely assume they just don't care. Perhaps they aspire to do for the safeguarding of children what West Yorkshire Police have done for protecting women.

ChattyLion · 06/06/2019 10:42

It’s such an abuse of trust for Childline to give this advice.

Apart from anything else what qualifies Childline to start dishing out encouragement to kids towards having drastically invasive, permanent, hormonal medical or surgical interventions?

Do they know these come with enormous risk of side effects (..associations with osteoporosis, lowering IQ, raising cancer risks, total fertility loss and more)? Binders that stop girls being physically active and can break their ribs?

Interventions like these- painful and debilitating- lack an evidence base of benefit. What happens if the child changes their mind, then they are stuck in that body? It doesn’t bear thinking about.

Much of this is not something the NHS would offer a young person under 18, so why is Childine promoting it?

Why are Childline not promoting mental health support and talking therapies on their pages- why even mention making changes to your body?

Who has got to Childline and why is validating those people more important to them than supporting confused kids?

This climate of inappropriate advice is a paediatric health issue and it needs urgent government attention and investigation.

HandsOffMyRights · 06/06/2019 10:56

Didn't Mermaids charity publicise their work with NSPCC?
Susie Green (CEO) & Mermaids do not understand Safeguarding.

According to MB's Twitter feed, MB has been out and about with Mermaids recently, giving talks to organisations.

So, a Childline representative working with Mermaids.

God, it's like the whole sweetshop is open for the taking.

Munroe, who got the boot from how many places for inappropriate online behaviour, and conduct gets a job at childline.

CHILDLINE?

I see comments on this thread about munroe not understanding safeguarding but it's pretty clear that childline aren't particularly hot on due diligence here.

Dreadful appointment. Utterly dreadful.

NSPCC/Childline are also disregarding recent whistle-blown concerns by senior medical professionals about the disregard of Safeguarding & Duty of Care obligations towards children & vulnerable adults.

These have yet to be examined. They will be though as any organisation familiar with Safeguarding frameworks should both support & know.

Whilst Munroe Bergdorf a model and trans activist may have reasonable excuse for not understanding Safeguarding, NSPCC (who do) are disregarding Safeguarding & Child Protection frameworks in their failure to do due dilligence.
Very serious issue.

MenstruatorExtraordinaire · 06/06/2019 11:41

WTAF I despair I really do

This, with bells and a bunting shop full of red flags on.

I second whoever it was who said that young people should be directed to Samaritans rather than Childline.

What a fucking place we are in.

StealthPolarBear · 06/06/2019 13:08

I'm seriously worried about this. Where do young people go to get advice without an agenda?

SarahTancredi · 06/06/2019 13:20

I dont think there is anywhere any more. Not one single lone voice of reason ensuring that safeguarding comes before anything else.

The fact they can on one day post about grooming and then allow themselves to be groomed is ridiculous.

Of all the lesbian or gay people who could have been appointed and been infinitely more qualified to be so, and they hire the one person who has been known to defend children dancing for money in clubs, who openly hates gay people .

Where do young potentially gay and lesbian children go.

HumberElla · 06/06/2019 13:28

Does Childline know who MB actually is? I mean did they just google ‘famous trans personality’ and then pick the first person on the list?

I’d be willing to bet whoever appointed MB doesn’t have the first clue about what they ‘campaign’ for or their views.

SarahTancredi · 06/06/2019 13:37

The chance to protest innocence long since vanished when nspcc refused to talk to parents on here on a web chat.

And when they refused to answer questions or didnt respond at all to emails sent by me and many others on this website.

That says everything we need to know. And this will surely peak anyone who was debating the issue before hand.

StealthPolarBear · 06/06/2019 13:44

"Where do young potentially gay and lesbian children go."
No such thing any more. They're all just trans kids who need to be shown the way.

RoyalCorgi · 06/06/2019 14:31

I agree with SarahTancredi. Let's assume that whoever is in charge of appointing campaigners at the NSPCC knows how to use Google. Let's give them the credit of believing that they will devote at least 10 minutes to researching someone's background. I think we can safely deduce that they have taken on Bergdorf knowing this person's views and history. We also know that numerous people, including posters on here, have pointed out to the NSPCC that their approach to safeguarding is reckless and puts children in danger.

There is only one conclusion, unfortunately, and that is that the NSPCC is doing this knowingly and deliberately. That there are people at the charity whose aim it is to undermine and break down safeguarding and therefore to put children at risk.

Cwenthryth · 06/06/2019 15:01

Munroe Bergdorf - who was fired from L’Oreal for racist public comments; who had to jump before they were pushed as ‘LGBT advisor’ for the Labour Party; who has a history of racist and homophobic tweets; who very publicly failed to see any potential concerns about a child dancing in a sexualised way for adults’ entertainment - this is not someone who is an appropriate role model for lesbian, gay, bisexual +/- gender non-conforming youth, or indeed any youth.

Good luck, Childline. I personally do not see this ending well for you. Very worrying for all of us, given the responsibility you assume for children’s safety and welfare.

MoleSmokes · 06/06/2019 15:09

@ChattyLion comment about the prominence of Gender Issues on the Childline site reminded me of something I meant to post a while ago. I have started a new thread but it is not showing up in the Index of FC threads.

( @Mumsnet Are new threads in FC being pre-moderated before being listed or is this a glitch???)

How did the trans agenda get so big, out of the blue? It didn't.

FlapsMagazine · 06/06/2019 15:47

Childline doesn't yet have it's own active Twitter account, so if anyone would like to voice their concerns about Munroe's history of homophobia, lack of safeguarding understanding and racism, then you can do so via the NSPCC
