A pleasant surprise

NC for this as very outing.

I came across a number of Tweets from a user whose profile described him as a serving officer with the Met. This is the complaint I sent yesterday:

Jon Killen, a emergency response officer in the MPS and LGBT+ officer, is issuing Tweets that I consider misogynist. His Twitter account (@LDNResponseCop) clearly identifies him professionally, so he cannot argue that he's only offering personal opinions. I cannot think his social media presence is doing anything good for the Met. It seems highly unprofessional. Certainly I would have less confidence were I involved in an incident and had to deal with Jon Killen than I would in a generic officer. Please look at what he's saying - and the response from many LGBT Twitter users who find his Tweets offensive. The police must be seen to be impartial.

I got a call from an inspector this morning. He'd gone through the officer's Tweets and agreed with me. He said it wasn't a disciplinary matter as there were no personally offensive Tweets but that the Tweets definitely overstepped the bounds of what a serving police officer should be saying on social media. A conversation was in order and he would be talking to the officer soon.

Only a small step, but I was pleased the Met seems to have taken it seriously.

Result OP! Well done for pursuing this.

Lumene · 01/06/2019 11:27

Great news.

WhereYouLeftIt · 01/06/2019 11:28

Well done! I saw these tweets yesterday, IIRC another officer was telling him ti wind his neck intoo (although far more politely).

Catapultaway · 01/06/2019 11:31

Yes well done. Trawling twitter for things you don't like to report to their employers, sounds familiar, also sounds petty and tedious.
If this was the other way round you would be calling it for what it is.

justju · 01/06/2019 11:53

Come off it Catapultaway.

There's a huge difference between spotting someone being an arse who's using their job title for authority, and reporting them to their employer - and between trawling Twitter for any women who happen to be employed anyoldwhere while making comments you personally disagree with.

FloralBunting · 01/06/2019 11:55

Expecting the police to not be misogynistic and holding then to those standards might be remarkably naive but it's not petty. Or don't you believe public institutions should be accountable?

nauticant · 01/06/2019 11:56

Well done OP. Especially since the action proposed by The Met looks to be proportionate. The best outcome would be for Killen to reflect on what he said and start to see the problems with it.

DancingRaven · 01/06/2019 12:01

Excellent work, the tweets to Lily Maynard were particularly problematic for a police officer to send

FloralBunting · 01/06/2019 12:03

nauticant I find myself indulging a wry smile at the suggestion a wokeyblokey 'reflect' which has such delightfully patronizing overtones and is so often used to clobber women in a superior manner. Excellent use of language.

misscockerspaniel · 01/06/2019 12:16

Well done. Fight fire not with fire but with water, to douse and extinguish the flames.

AncientLights · 01/06/2019 12:19

If they are the Tweets I've seen then he was accusing someone of being directly responsible for trans people's deaths. Reminiscent of La Belcher & Janice Turner (think that's who it was). That didn't end well for Belcher. Some Tweets were encouraging the suing of the policeman. Not sure your inspector is taking it quite seriously enough.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 01/06/2019 12:19

That's good news. Well done.

nauticant · 01/06/2019 12:19

I live in hope FloralBunting. After all, it's a lovely day and the start of the weekend.

Wouldn't it be great if he could take another look at the thread on twitter and think, "all these women, including feminists, lesbians, professionally qualified, and the rest, what if they are right?!"

XXcstatic · 01/06/2019 12:23

Well done - OP. It's so important to push back.

APleasantSurprise · 01/06/2019 12:41

Not sure your inspector is taking it quite seriously enough.

He said if @LDNResponseCop had insulted or abused me personally that would rise to the level of disciplinary action but that as things stood he agreed that the Tweets overstepped the bounds of what was acceptable for a police officer on social media.

I agreed with him. I am happy that he's being told it's not ok and to change his behaviour. I said the area covered by the Met is extremely diverse and officers needed to be careful what they said in public. The inspector agreed. He was obviously aware that the Hampstead ponds business is very controversial and acknowledged he knows there may be legal action from the Orthodox Jewish community in North London. He agreed that it was not appropriate for a serving officer to come out on such an issue in his role as a cop.

I also said that were I a lesbian I would not feel supported by a man who describes himself as a LGBT+ officer and issues such misogynist tweets. I brought up the split in the LGBT and the Cotton Ceiling.

It was not a rushed or perfunctory conversation. I felt my concerns were taken seriously.

Good. I found "Jon's" tone really inappropriate.

Although their comments on trans animals were comedy gold

truthisarevolutionaryact · 01/06/2019 13:15

Well done OP. That's real progress. It is a source of concern that serving police officers feel it is their role to actively intimidate the rest of society (especially women) on behalf of trans lobby groups seeking to remove women and children's rights in order to increase their own.

The fact that they appear oblivious to this political bias is a massive problem. Hopefully LDNResponseCop will 'reflect' on how falsely accusing Lily Maynard of being "..dangerous and leading to trans people being killed" is not only incorrect but biased and not appropriate for a police officer to allege. (I also hope that Lily sues the pants off the prat but that's another matter).

theOtherPamAyres · 01/06/2019 13:16

Did the Inspector promise to communicate the outcome?
Has the complaint been recorded?

It sounds like your complaint is being dealt with under the heading of 'local resolution', so you should receive an update. (Unless you opted to 'leave it with the Inspector to sort out in their own way'!)

Here's a short walk through the complaints system:

www.policeconduct.gov.uk/sites/default/files/Documents/Complaint_forms/A_guide_to_the_system.pdf

The police get criticised when they use 'local resolution' instead of investigating the complaint throughly. In this case, I think local resolution is the correct path - but the police have a duty to see it through to the end. That means communicating the result and informing you of the PC's responses - unless you opt not to hear from them again.

In the light of what I've said - do you still feel that the matter was taken seriously? S/he may have said the right things but it's the subsequent actions that count.

wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 01/06/2019 13:17

Well done OP.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 01/06/2019 13:18

Is xe being re-educated then? A bobby in uniform turning up in xer doorstep to threaten them? Thrown in a cell for a few hours? 4 police and a horse rocking up?

Oh bore off with your misogynistic, real women hating language Zoecb. We’ve heard and read it all from so many TRAs/MRAs that it’s boring now and actually encourages us to defend women’s boundaries even more vigorously.

Well done, OP.

JessicaWakefieldSV · 01/06/2019 14:56

Well done OP. This police Officer is in a position of power and authority and his social media has to reflect this.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 01/06/2019 15:19

Tweet is still up there though.

Slightaggrandising · 01/06/2019 15:21

Well done OP. Looking forward to him retracting his tweets
