Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

A pleasant surprise

NC for this as very outing.

I came across a number of Tweets from a user whose profile described him as a serving officer with the Met. This is the complaint I sent yesterday:

Jon Killen, a emergency response officer in the MPS and LGBT+ officer, is issuing Tweets that I consider misogynist. His Twitter account (@LDNResponseCop) clearly identifies him professionally, so he cannot argue that he's only offering personal opinions. I cannot think his social media presence is doing anything good for the Met. It seems highly unprofessional. Certainly I would have less confidence were I involved in an incident and had to deal with Jon Killen than I would in a generic officer. Please look at what he's saying - and the response from many LGBT Twitter users who find his Tweets offensive. The police must be seen to be impartial.

I got a call from an inspector this morning. He'd gone through the officer's Tweets and agreed with me. He said it wasn't a disciplinary matter as there were no personally offensive Tweets but that the Tweets definitely overstepped the bounds of what a serving police officer should be saying on social media. A conversation was in order and he would be talking to the officer soon.

Only a small step, but I was pleased the Met seems to have taken it seriously.

A brand new poster arrives to scold women. How nice. Still, as wiser heads have said, grey rock.

littlecabbage · 01/06/2019 20:02

Nice work OP.

AnyOldPrion · 01/06/2019 21:35

Fekko.
I judge someone who looks me in the eye and says they are a woman with a penis between their legs.

Grin

I’ve had a penis between my legs from time to time, but never with a third person present. I’d judge someone too if they were at it in a public place and looked me in the eye, while uttering the immortal words “they are a woman”

Apologies for the diversion, Pleasant. Glad you’ve taken action and I hope it’s satisfactorily followed up.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 01/06/2019 22:53

A third person? Oooerrrr!

HerFemaleness · 02/06/2019 00:22

It’s only misogynists who judge people’s worth and role and rights by what’s between their legs, that’s my exact point.

You're so close to getting it. Only a misogynist would ever make the claim that 'most' people with vagina's share some sort of psychological and emotional state, i.e they are of the same gender.

TheGoalIsToStayOutOfTheHole · 02/06/2019 12:14

LOL, another 'if you acknowledge sex is real and important in some areas of life, you are amisogynist' poster. Goody. If you refuse to acknowledge sex, you cannot fight sexism. But I guess, those kinds will also argue that men suffer misogyny too..and usually a far higher rate than women, poor things. Such a ridiculous argument, that if women want certain areas away from the male sex then they are actually misogynists.

HumansCannotEverChangeSex · 02/06/2019 13:44

Women have vaginas (and everything else that is under the definition of female) and Men have a penis (and everything else that is under the definition of male). It’s not hard to understand. To be trans you are one biological sex that is using stereotype to present as the opposite sex. Therefore people who are trans are just that, trans. They don’t magically become the opposite sex. Fs, I thought we learnt about male and female in primary school.

Zoecb · 02/06/2019 17:59

Luckily most of us do have more than a primary school education where you get a slightly more in-depth study of science than that. Atoms aren’t the smallest thing either, because there are sub-atomic particles, but you teach that to 16 year olds not 11 year olds - hopefully you get the gist.

Sex is more complicated than a binary, chromosomal and developmental variations to the typical are perfectly common, about 1.7% of births according to studies.
As for gender, that’s rather more complex and it baffles me how much people want to assert authority and control over other people’s lives and obstinately remain on the wrong side of history. Do any of you even know any trans people? Do you hate transmen as much as you hate trans women? I really don’t understand transphobia.

The only satisfactory response to this “complaint” would be to respond saying that Jon’s tweets are perfectly acceptable and that the writer would be well reminded that transphobic hate crimes are not taken lightly.

Yawn.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 02/06/2019 18:43

Ah! That's where I left my salad...

Can't beat a bit if word salad with your tea.

Me too Zoe. Gender needs to get in the bin right? Let’s just stick to sex and call the other stuff a personality!

I couldn’t agree more. It’s like going back to pre Victorian times, when women were made to feel like second class citizens and didn’t even have female only toilets. Thank goddess women are no longer sitting back and being ‘nice’ while being told by men how to behave and that they have to hand all their rights to privacy, safety and dignity over to men to control.

Women have lived through sexism and abuse at the hands of males and have decided enough is enough, we will leave that part of history behind and move forward stronger and braver than ever before, because young women and children deserve our support.

FloralBunting · 02/06/2019 19:00

Oh, is it Sunday already? Do the really boring AWAs have an appointment alarm in their phones to come spout nonsense at the weekend? Regular as clockwork.

JessicaWakefieldSV · 02/06/2019 19:12

In a sexed species, there are two sexes, male and female. 99.93% of humans have XX or XY chromosomes, the others are a mutation and nothing to do with transgenderism.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 02/06/2019 19:17

Do any of you even know any trans people?

Yes
Do you hate transmen as much as you hate trans women?

I dont hate anyone (maybe trump...and im not keen on gove)

I really don’t understand transphobia

Neither do i?

The definition seems to change on a very frequent basis

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 02/06/2019 19:18

Farage

Not keen on him either

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 02/06/2019 19:24

Me neither

Zoecb · 02/06/2019 20:34

You get some quirks where you have people with XY chromosomes but whose bodies ignore testosterone so don’t develop any male characteristics in the womb or in puberty, and plenty of other fascinating mutations! I love genetics geekery! And this is just talking about physically visible sex characteristics, the brain is far more elusive to study.

HumberElla · 02/06/2019 21:21

Genetic and chromosomal mutations do not change the fact that humans have two sexes.

There are a number of actual practicing geneticists on here, I’m sure you’d learn lots from them Zoe.

I’m more of a brain specialist myself.

I wonder if Jon will be getting a well deserved talking to next week to make sure he takes his responsibilities seriously. Amazes me how people in these positions get away with talking such irresponsible nonsense to the public.

JessicaWakefieldSV · 02/06/2019 21:31

Your fascination seems to ignore that these ‘mutations’ are variations on human sexual dimorphism and can cause significant problems to health and fertility.

This also has nothing to do with transgenderism.

FloralBunting · 02/06/2019 21:37

Are we still talking about chromosomes and DSDs in relation to people with completely straightforward XY or XX chromosomes who believe they are mysteriously, in ways we cannot really define except in sexist stereotypes, a member of the other sex?

Why would we still be doing that? Especially in a thread about a man in authority being upbraided for abusing his position to tweet nasty things.

It’s a real poser isn’t it Spartacus?

HumansCannotEverChangeSex · 03/06/2019 09:52

Gender is a bullshit made up social constructs designed to keep men and women in their separate little boxes. Do not talk to me like gender means anything other than your personality or what you enjoy. I know people who are trans and funny enough, a lot of them agree with the fact you cannot change sex.

I prefer this one
