Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

A pleasant surprise

NC for this as very outing.

I came across a number of Tweets from a user whose profile described him as a serving officer with the Met. This is the complaint I sent yesterday:

Jon Killen, a emergency response officer in the MPS and LGBT+ officer, is issuing Tweets that I consider misogynist. His Twitter account (@LDNResponseCop) clearly identifies him professionally, so he cannot argue that he's only offering personal opinions. I cannot think his social media presence is doing anything good for the Met. It seems highly unprofessional. Certainly I would have less confidence were I involved in an incident and had to deal with Jon Killen than I would in a generic officer. Please look at what he's saying - and the response from many LGBT Twitter users who find his Tweets offensive. The police must be seen to be impartial.

I got a call from an inspector this morning. He'd gone through the officer's Tweets and agreed with me. He said it wasn't a disciplinary matter as there were no personally offensive Tweets but that the Tweets definitely overstepped the bounds of what a serving police officer should be saying on social media. A conversation was in order and he would be talking to the officer soon.

Only a small step, but I was pleased the Met seems to have taken it seriously.

Not ‘him’ but ‘they/them’. Because they don’t know obviously if they are a PC or WPC.

SisterWendyBuckett · 01/06/2019 16:01

Great to hear this OP.

I really admire Lily Maynard and think she's doing amazing work. She's a voice of sanity amongst the Twitter mayhem.

Zoecb · 01/06/2019 16:12

Gosh I got censored! No idea why.

Transwomen are women, that is a statement of fact. The police are entirely right and professional to uphold and support the Equalities Act.

Being obsessed with assessing and policing women’s genitals is where the misogyny lies.

"Gosh I got censored! No idea why."
Oh, I think you do. You really do.

"Transwomen are women, that is a statement of fact."
No. It's a statement of your opinion.

WhereYouLeftIt · 01/06/2019 16:20

Ah, you're quite right Spartacus.

Upzadaizy · 01/06/2019 16:35

Although their comments on trans animals were comedy gold

And his grasp of history

Zoecb · 01/06/2019 16:40

Nope I really don’t.

And Identity isn’t a matter of opinion, certainly not anyone else’s.
Legally transwomen are women.

The details of their genitals are nobody’s business and of nobody’s concern but their own, their relationship partners’ and their healthcare providers’. Same as anyone’s genitals for that matter.

justju · 01/06/2019 16:43

Genitals genitals genitals, that's all you young people think about these days

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 01/06/2019 16:53

Legally some trans women are can be ‘women’ on paper.

LangCleg · 01/06/2019 16:57

Talking past GFery... from the OP:

His Twitter account (@LDNResponseCop) clearly identifies him professionally, so he cannot argue that he's only offering personal opinions.

Indeed. I'd hope a local resolution will be satisfactory but I also hope you hold the process accountable, OP. Don't get fobbed off.

Zoecb · 01/06/2019 16:58

It’s only misogynists who judge people’s worth and role and rights by what’s between their legs, that’s my exact point.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 01/06/2019 17:02

I judge someone who looks me in the eye and says they are a woman with a penis between their legs.

Zoecb · 01/06/2019 17:10

And I judge transphobes for being transphobic, homophobes for being homophobic, racists for being racist, etc etc.

It’s very sad how much ignorance, wilful or otherwise, there is about sex and gender.

OrchidInTheSun · 01/06/2019 17:16

Well done APleasantSurprise. That's excellent news.

Incidentally, on the Hampstead Heath issue, I've been reading the excellent guidance that Louise Whitfield from Deighton Pierce Glynn has written and it looks like the CoL is clearly failing in its public duty to open the Ladies Pond up to men who identify as women. I look forward to the legal challenge Smile

justju · 01/06/2019 17:17

Just a reminder that it's the weekend and TRAs like to target mumsnetters to get them all wound up and banned.

Hope you're all enjoying the warm weatherGin

Babdoc · 01/06/2019 17:24

I don’t think anyone on the feminist board here on MN is ignorant about sex or gender, Zoecb, wilfully or otherwise.
Sex is unchangeable, physical reality. Gender is an artificial social construct, consisting of harmful stereotypes, which we have fought for decades.
HTH.

hopefully this works!

Agreed.

HumberElla · 01/06/2019 17:55

Good I’m glad you had a response re that police officer OP. I would encourage you to follow it up if you have time, to see that it is dealt with and you know the outcome.

Those in positions of authority hold our trust and have a responsibility to be impartial. Whatever their personal views.

Matters of opinion and beliefs should be kept firmly out of the workplace when your responsibility is to work within and uphold the law.

JessicaWakefieldSV · 01/06/2019 17:56

It’s only misogynists who judge people’s worth and role and rights by what’s between their legs

This is a very muddled comment that doesn’t consider the legal rights that are specific to women, as a protected vulnerable sex class. Rights specific to women, very much reflect someone’s biology- crudely reducing it to ‘what’s between someone’s legs’ is juvenile and unhelpful.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 01/06/2019 19:22

I know spartacus

But but but

that is a statement of fact

C’mooooooonnnnnn
