Georgia (USA) makes abortion punishable by life imprisonment.

New legislation HB 481 only allows abortion up to 6 weeks. It has massive consequences for women who get abortions from doctors or miscarry. A woman who seeks out an illegal abortion from a health care provider would be a party to murder, subject to life in prison. And a woman who miscarries because of her own conduct—say, using drugs or alcohol while pregnant—would be liable for second-degree murder, punishable by 10 to 30 years’ imprisonment. Prosecutors may interrogate women who miscarry to determine whether they can be held responsible; if they find evidence of culpability, they may charge, detain, and try these women for the death of their fetuses.

Even women who seek lawful abortions out of state may not escape punishment. If a Georgia resident plans to travel elsewhere to obtain an abortion, she may be charged with conspiracy to commit murder, punishable by 10 years’ imprisonment. An individual who helps a woman plan her trip to get an out-of-state abortion, or transports her to the clinic, may also be charged with conspiracy to end of the life of a “person” with “full legal recognition” under Georgia law.

This is a shocking assault on women's health, autonomy and reproductive rights. The intention to 'interrogate' women who miscarry to check for 'blame' is inhuman. Apparently 28 other states are intending to follow Georgia's lead.

@pruplehammer you do realise that line was an insult right? Not a par for the course type of thing

BogglesGoggles · 09/05/2019 17:59

@muststopfaffing unfortunately not, we’ll have to leave the Georgians to it.

Datun · 09/05/2019 18:12

And 28 other states are considering it.

The US is a barbaric, unevolved nation.

Ereshkigal · 09/05/2019 18:21

So the right & the left in the US are both working to destroy women.

Yes. It's awful.

Littleoakhorn · 09/05/2019 18:21

You can do a few things:

  1. Find out who is funding this and whether they’re funding/ lobbying UK MPs
  1. Find out who’s campaigning against this and what they need
Sagradafamiliar · 09/05/2019 18:38

I can't get my head around this. It's nightmarish

cakeandchampagne · 09/05/2019 18:39

It seems these laws would also discourage women from seeking healthcare for symptoms that actually are cancer, appendicitis, etc.

HumansCannotEverChangeSex · 09/05/2019 18:44

I can’t help but think of all the miscarriages that happen before and on the six week mark. Imagine never knowing you were pregnant but because there is proof you drank some alcohol you could end up in prison. What about women that aren’t first time mothers? The kids that they have aren’t being thought of when they could lose their mother forever when all she wanted to do was make a choice for her own body.

RedTrek · 09/05/2019 18:46

This has made me feel actually sick. What heartless cruelty. My thoughts are with the women of Georgia.

SimonJT · 09/05/2019 18:47

What goes through some people’s minds.

So a state that makes contraception difficult and expensive to access.

A state that has piss poor sex education.

A state that doesn’t support children who are born into poor families. Lots of pro-lifers will do anything for a fetus to be born, but once they’re here and breathing they’re treated as low life scum.

Not agreeing with abortion is perfectly fine, just refrain from having one yourself, but don’t you dare decide what someone else can do with their own body.

Pankhurst2000 · 09/05/2019 18:49

A real victory for science here ladies, it is quite clear that the earliest human embryo is biologically alive. It fulfils the four criteria needed to establish biological life: metabolism, growth, reaction to stimuli, and reproduction. the child has completely unique DNA, an abortion is ending a human life. Hopefully this will result in women no longer having to live with the weight of ending a human life, often when they were pushed into it by men.

pheonixrebirth · 09/05/2019 18:52

I'm absolutely horrified that this can really happen! If I lived in the US, as a woman I would looking at emigrating ASAP! This is a hop skip and a jump to the handmaids take!

cottonwoolmouth · 09/05/2019 18:56

Shit. That’s really bad. The handmaids tale is a story no?..

JessicaWakefieldSV · 09/05/2019 18:57

This is horrible. Truly terrifying times.

Slaymill · 09/05/2019 19:03

In the UK you have to three miscarriages before investigation. I suffered as my partner had an undiagnosed genetic disorder. Which we found out in a later pregnancy.

I tried to have a CVS but, the doctor could not perform it safely so I had to wait for an amino. So I would obviously be doing time if I lived there. It is heinous in the extreme.

Oncewasblueandyellowtwo · 09/05/2019 19:04

Pankhurst Are you trying to be sarcastic, are you a troll or are you serious?

StealthPolarBear · 09/05/2019 19:07

Pankhurst 2000 is that post, or your name, sarcasm?
This is horrific. Women will die. They will access backstreet abortions. They will miscarry alone and get infections which they won't be able to treat effectively. What is wrong with America? What the hell??!

Spudina · 09/05/2019 19:10

Under his eye indeeed. Sickening.

JessicaWakefieldSV · 09/05/2019 19:14

Pankhurst I carry no such weight after deciding on a termination.

Pankhurst2000 · 09/05/2019 19:15

Women deserve better than abortion, its existence is a reflection that society has not yet met the equal needs of women. Abortion is a symptom of patriarchy and not a solution to it. As a firm believer in equality, when the evidence shows the unborn are as human as you or me, then they need rights to protect them. there is no greater human right than the right to life.

FloralBunting · 09/05/2019 19:16

This is a country which contains Minnesota, where marital rape was only just made illegal this year. I'm watching my Facebook feed and people falling over themselves with glee, talking about all the babies this will save, and I am truly ashamed.

This is not how you do pro life. This is just pure, judgemental hatred of women. As someone who is increasingly reluctant to admit I am pro life, I'm appalled.

Datun · 09/05/2019 19:17

Hopefully this will result in women no longer having to live with the weight of ending a human life, often when they were pushed into it by men.

Deception and idiocy.

You are talking about coercion to have an abortion. Address that then. Strewth, do you not have an argument without resorting to manipulation?

Ereshkigal · 09/05/2019 19:18

Putting aside the right to an abortion for a second, do you personally think it's also fair for women who have miscarriages or ectopic pregnancy to suffer?

Datun · 09/05/2019 19:19

And yes, if you are really against abortion to the extent of subjecting women who miscarry to an inquisition, then follow a previous poster's suggestion.

All pubescent boys to deposit sperm at a sperm bank, and then be made sterile.

Job done.

CalmaChamelion · 09/05/2019 19:25

The only thing we can be glad about is men’s sperm counts are dropping like a stone all over the world! Fuckers won’t be able to get us pregnant soon
