Georgia (USA) makes abortion punishable by life imprisonment.

New legislation HB 481 only allows abortion up to 6 weeks. It has massive consequences for women who get abortions from doctors or miscarry. A woman who seeks out an illegal abortion from a health care provider would be a party to murder, subject to life in prison. And a woman who miscarries because of her own conduct—say, using drugs or alcohol while pregnant—would be liable for second-degree murder, punishable by 10 to 30 years’ imprisonment. Prosecutors may interrogate women who miscarry to determine whether they can be held responsible; if they find evidence of culpability, they may charge, detain, and try these women for the death of their fetuses.

Even women who seek lawful abortions out of state may not escape punishment. If a Georgia resident plans to travel elsewhere to obtain an abortion, she may be charged with conspiracy to commit murder, punishable by 10 years’ imprisonment. An individual who helps a woman plan her trip to get an out-of-state abortion, or transports her to the clinic, may also be charged with conspiracy to end of the life of a “person” with “full legal recognition” under Georgia law.

This is a shocking assault on women's health, autonomy and reproductive rights. The intention to 'interrogate' women who miscarry to check for 'blame' is inhuman. Apparently 28 other states are intending to follow Georgia's lead.

I'm so so so angry and upset by this. We cant do anything, we cant help, we just have to sit back and watch the suffering of thousands of women unfold. It makes me feel physically sick. It feels like the beginning of the end.

Missouri just passed bill outlawing abortion from 8 weeks on, including rape and incest. How many states is that now?

This is so frightening, so many things happening at the same time to undermine women's rights.

an MN thing of looking at the best things in the best EU countries

Fair 'nuff. Although I didn't say EU, I said European sphere of influence and I was thinking of the best things, yep. Should we not aspire to the best? Smile

Seriously, though, does anyone have any coping strategies for everything that's going on right now? I've just been so eaten up with rage for the last few days. People generally describe me as a "very gentle" person but I find myself daydreaming now about how much I'd like to inflict actual fucking pain on the people who do these things to women. How do I channel this into something more productive?

From another perspective these new acts aims to protect the lives of unborn babies as no matter how you dress it up, abortion is just the killing of unborn children!

Yes women should have the right to choose what happens to their own body but perhaps it would be much better if abortions were not needed and safer sex was promoted/practiced, or were not having sex at all if you are not prepared to handle the consequences. We all know how the birds and the bees work and if your prepared to do the deed then your prepared to have a baby!

flopsyandflim · 16/05/2019 23:56

But a lot of the time anti-abortion goes hand in hand with anti-birth control. That’s what I don’t understand.

And as for not having sex well that would mean MEN going without sex and I’m pretty sure the anti-abortion anti-contraception brigade wouldn’t want males being denied their right to sex

I just made a thread about this.

TBH after reading these quotes, nothing surprises me.

Aren't some states putting in place/ have in place state laws which would survive an overturn of Wade-v- Roe?

OtepotiLilliane42 · 17/05/2019 02:08

A good, factual article from Vox journal, which corrects misinformation on who has abortions and why. I was interested to read that abortions are at an all time low because of (surprise, suprise!) of better access to various forms of contraception.

slutty women - how kind of a troll to pop up and show us, beyond a shadow of a doubt that this is nothing to do with love of the sacred foetus and everything to do with hating women and women's sexuality.

Presumably slutty women includes 11 year old rape victims and women with sepsis due to an infected womb whose much wanted foetus is inevitably going to die but still has a heartbeat.

Like they say on the relationships board, "When someone shows you who they are, believe them."

In this case, someone who hates women so much they're happy to see them die in backstreet abortions.

There's mention of that in this piece from recent New York Times.

I think they are quite happy to frame abortion as a problem caused by other feckless men. They are less happy to accept that regardless of their parents children still need care post birth - it is the child’s role to do penance on behalf of their feckless parents.

Oncewasblueandyellowtwo · 17/05/2019 13:33

"The Trump administration has taken its war on abortion worldwide, cutting off all funding to any overseas organisation or clinic that will not agree to a complete ban on even discussing it."

Oncewasblueandyellowtwo · 17/05/2019 13:35

Apparently even if a county is funded by another county but also receives funding from the US, funds will be cut if they use another county's fund to talk about abortion.

Needtofindthescissors · 17/05/2019 17:54

If the "slutty women" came from me, then clearly there was a sarcasm failure - my point was exactly the same as FermatsTheorem's, namely than these people are pretending to love "babies" when actually it all comes down to their misogynistic beliefs about women and sex!

FermatsTheorem · 17/05/2019 18:17

Sorry Need - a Poe's law fail there! (I didn't report, btw.)
