Georgia (USA) makes abortion punishable by life imprisonment.

New legislation HB 481 only allows abortion up to 6 weeks. It has massive consequences for women who get abortions from doctors or miscarry. A woman who seeks out an illegal abortion from a health care provider would be a party to murder, subject to life in prison. And a woman who miscarries because of her own conduct—say, using drugs or alcohol while pregnant—would be liable for second-degree murder, punishable by 10 to 30 years’ imprisonment. Prosecutors may interrogate women who miscarry to determine whether they can be held responsible; if they find evidence of culpability, they may charge, detain, and try these women for the death of their fetuses.

Even women who seek lawful abortions out of state may not escape punishment. If a Georgia resident plans to travel elsewhere to obtain an abortion, she may be charged with conspiracy to commit murder, punishable by 10 years’ imprisonment. An individual who helps a woman plan her trip to get an out-of-state abortion, or transports her to the clinic, may also be charged with conspiracy to end of the life of a “person” with “full legal recognition” under Georgia law.

This is a shocking assault on women's health, autonomy and reproductive rights. The intention to 'interrogate' women who miscarry to check for 'blame' is inhuman. Apparently 28 other states are intending to follow Georgia's lead.

Just noticed this unbelievably crass tweet:

So a woman has a genuine miscarriage and on top of that trauma she now has to worry she’ll be accused of purposely ending her pregnancy and receive the death penalty?! That’s absolutely insane!

Women need to move from Georgia. It is not a safe place for them
Agreed.

SarahTancredi · 09/05/2019 16:24

Ffs

No it affects WOMEN!

Piss ofd

Willowkoko · 09/05/2019 16:31

I would how they will police women going out of state to get an abortion? Will it be family members turning in loved ones? It’s all SO backwards. I didn’t know I was pregnant until 6.5 weeks with my first, I experienced no symptoms at all.

Willowkoko · 09/05/2019 16:32

Wonder

ErrolTheDragon · 09/05/2019 16:32

I can't see using the term 'people with uteruses' being in any way helpful to either women or transmen in Georgia. Rather the reverse, I fear.

Ereshkigal · 09/05/2019 16:35

The gender warriors just wait for the opportunity to jump in and do that, Sarah. "Friendly reminder" etc. I had a huge argument with one who popped up to derail some poor woman's endometriosis thread.

SaskiaRembrandt · 09/05/2019 16:35

Quite. In fact saying 'people' rather than 'women' makes it easier for the proponents of these bills to insist it isn't misogynistic because it affects 'people' not 'women'.

ClaireUnderwoodforPresident · 09/05/2019 16:36

This is the worst thing I've heard in a long time. Handmaids tale anyone? Angry

Ereshkigal · 09/05/2019 16:36

Exactly. Whatever people's personal pro life beliefs may be, these laws are founded in misogyny.

ReganSomerset · 09/05/2019 16:38

I'd have thought it'd be the doctors if they had accessed medical care. Otherwise any disgruntled man whose ex gf had left the state could claim she'd had a pregnancy and abortion.

Ereshkigal · 09/05/2019 16:38

And we need to be able to point that misogyny out, not have idiots telling us how we need to tiptoe round it. It rather plays to the handsmaids tale theme as well. We are literally just people with uteruses.

ErrolTheDragon · 09/05/2019 16:41

6 weeks...that's counted from first day of last period, isn't it?

The menstrual cycle, which is counted from the first day of one period to the first day of the next, isn't the same for every woman. Menstrual flow might occur every 21 to 35 days and last two to seven days. For the first few years after menstruation begins, long cycles are common. However, menstrual cycles tend to shorten and become more regular as you age.

5 week cycles are normal. Longer or irregular cycles are common. (I had PCOS ... could be months between periods, but at least I was subfertile along with it.Hmm)

Essentially this law would mean no abortions as such, but wouldn't automatically make some forms of contraception and MAP illegal.

TheTreeHearsYourSecret · 09/05/2019 16:46

The US has been chipping away at access to abortions for years. This is John Oliver covering it from 3 years ago. Law makers put ridiculous and unnecessary legislation in place to essentially shut down any provider.

It is a hard hitting news show with a comedic tone to it, so ignore the fact it starts talking about breast implants, it is to show how ridiculous the whole thing is.

placemats · 09/05/2019 16:58

I'd like to pass a law in Georgia, USA that says all males from the age of 16 should deposit sperm and then be sterilised.

I bet there would be uproar!

placemats · 09/05/2019 17:01

This law is hatred of women and children. It's as simple as that.

PickleC · 09/05/2019 17:27

This is horrific. That you can be threatened with 10 years imprisonment if you cross the state lines to access what should be considered basic healthcare? To have a limit of 6 weeks - far too early for most people to know they are pregnant, to make a decision and to access that healthcare? And there definitely will be women prosecuted and imprisoned for miscarriages as there have been cases from other countries that also have draconian abortion laws. Misogyny in its most extreme form. Rarely absolutely spitting with anger but putting women's lives and safety at risk gets me there pdq.

Purplehammer · 09/05/2019 17:27

And they have the cheek to call it ‘the land of the free’.
Their treatment of women can be summed up in a line from a song in the movie “ Grease”. “Tell me more, tell me more, did she put up a fight.”

EmpressLesbianInChair · 09/05/2019 17:42

So the right & the left in the US are both working to destroy women.

Barbaric nonsense. An unconscionable assault on what little autonomy and freedom and rights women have over their own bodies. The US is both backward and morally repugnant.

Oncewasblueandyellowtwo · 09/05/2019 17:52

Will there be a backlash to this in the same way as there was to Brunei I wonder? The same kind of draconian law...
Those poor women (and girls) in Georgia. Horrific.

BogglesGoggles · 09/05/2019 17:56

And again the prize for ignorance in a developed nation goes to America! Really, the reimplanting and ectopic pregnancybideas is the stupidest thing I’ve read today. And I’ve read a thread about making the abortion cut off six week 🤷‍♀️

Muststopfaffing · 09/05/2019 17:58

A couple of hours later, I’m still seething. What can we do to help? My MP doesn’t bother to respond to the things I send her that affect women in the UK so no hope there. Is there anything we can do?
