I am officially transphobic...

Wow... so dsd just flounced upstairs as she 'can't cope with the transphobia' after I commented on a news story where. Very PC PC complained to Sainsbury's about the 'feminine hygiene' labelling of sanitary protection wasn't inclusive enough...

I'm sad that a very intelligent 17 year old appears to be buying in to this shit, but I feel I deserve a badge of honour for flagging it...

Welcome to the club. It's not a very exclusive one, mind you, around 95% of the population is "transphobic" according to the current definition.

nauticant · 10/04/2019 21:54

Along with much of science and large parts of reality.

hipsterfun · 10/04/2019 21:59

And yet hardly anyone fits the definition of cis Confused

JackyHolyoake · 10/04/2019 22:06

I can't give you a Badge of Honour [I can't find a pic of one] but I can give you a Gold Star, Mrs Nathan Drake Smile

I am officially transphobic...

Confused

Surely that is a bit like me (a woman) complaining that condom and viagra packaging etc is not inclusive of me just because I don't happen to have a penis...

Yup, mm-hmm.

ZebrasAreBras · 10/04/2019 22:54

They'll tell you women can have penises too, WayofTheWorld

Oh yes.

(Narrator: "Women don't have penises.")

Daffopill · 10/04/2019 23:01

She’s in a strop because she can’t argue with your logic.
I’ve got a koolaid drunk teenager but it will be a cold day in hell before I censor myself in my own home.
We have, however, agreed that under 18s shouldn’t be put on puberty blockers.

LassOfFyvie · 10/04/2019 23:45

I assume what the OP's daughter was objecting to was the word "feminine" as trans men will need "feminine hygiene products"

Has the OP's daughter come across Blaire White? The paradoxes might make her head explode. White is a right- wing , libertarian, anti-feminist, trans woman yet on issues such as biological sex and transing of children says pretty much what posters here say, gets called transphobic for it and recently has had speaking events cancelled.

I'm not keen on the phrase feminine hygiene myself, tbh. It still feels like blue liquid on sanpro obfuscation to me. I'd be quite happy with 'Period Products' down the Health and Beauty aisle.

T1meForDebate · 10/04/2019 23:52

'Feminine hygiene' sounds very 1950s! Period products sounds ok. When I was a Boots Saturday girl, we called it all sanpro - sanitary products or protection, not sure which.

LassOfFyvie · 10/04/2019 23:58

Me neither, and I'm as girly-brained, feminine performing as you're likely to find.

I'm trying to picture a Boots aisle - do they even call it that now? I only have need of it for the occasional Tena lady and they are in the same aisle.

FloralBunting · 11/04/2019 00:03

Yes, I know we shorthand it sanpro often, but even that is a teensy bit diversionary to me. Sanitary and hygiene are references to cleanliness, which is fine, but I say get that Period word out there. The whole shelf of shower gels are sanitary products. There's sanitary protection products in the household and baby section with Milton and pine disinfectant.

And feminine, like it or not, in our culture, means pink and frilly and variations thereof.

If they had always being called 'Women's' something or other, I'd get pissy about changing it to be more 'inclusive', but getting shot of the twee diversionary language seems like quite a good idea to me. These are products used for periods, which only women get. I say let's make sure even the women who get them and erroneously feel that their bodies are so wrong they can't be women know that that part of the supermarket is for them, too.

donajimena · 11/04/2019 00:10

I think its just labelled tampons and sanitary towels now. Which is perfect

S1naidSucks · 11/04/2019 00:22

Tell your daughter that you can’t possibly be transphobic, as you identify as being genderfree, so therefore fit under the stonewall umbrella. Then step back and watch her poor woke head explode. 😁

Teenagers will use any old stick that's lying around to beat you with.

This is just a new stylee "wokestick"..

Childrenofthestones · 11/04/2019 12:36

"I'm sad that a very intelligent 17 year old appears to be buying in to this shit, "

OP , if you think she is buying this shit now just wait until your intelligent daughter has been through the belly of the beast, otherwise known as university.
They are about to fuck with her mind in ways you haven't even imagined.

Bookworm4 · 11/04/2019 12:40

I'm always mystified how people whether trans, gay etc expect inclusivity but they themselves won't allow anyone to be what they are : male/female, it's seems hypocritical to me.

BuzzPeakWankBobbly · 11/04/2019 12:42

I can't stand "sanpro" myself. It's insufferably twee and I always imagine people saying it in a slightly haughty, considerably better than you, tone.

Fairenuff · 11/04/2019 12:46

My dd is a full believer. At 22 she thinks TWAW and says that everyone she knows thinks the same (although I'm secretly hoping that some of them are just to scared of being called transphobic to admit to what they really think).

She thinks there is absolutely no difference between male and female bodies if the male bodied person says they are female and that tw taking scholarships and sponsorships in female sport is perfectly acceptable because they have proved themselves to be 'the best female' so are entitled to it.

She calls herself a feminist and is perfectly rational about all other subjects but this one. I don't know how I raised such a noggin. I blame university. Although ds who is also at university is very sensible in recognising the differences between males and females regardless of how they identify and thinks female only sex segregated spaces should remain.

BalletBunting · 11/04/2019 12:46

She sounds like an intelligent and empathetic young women. Good on her!

Childrenofthestones · 11/04/2019 12:50

Fairenuff,
Can I ask what they are each studying?

Fairenuff · 11/04/2019 12:51

I assume what the OP's daughter was objecting to was the word "feminine" as trans men will need "feminine hygiene products"

I have a transman friend who is always spouting on about how transmen are men and it's ok for men to be feminine.

If someone is determined to be offended you can't win whatever you do.

Lamaha · 11/04/2019 12:58

@Fairenuff that is truly scary. What kind of adults are we producing, if this is the general belief of today's uni students??? I can only hope it will blow over -- that something truly dramatic and awful and indefensible will happen so that the bubble bursts and they can't help but peak trans.

Bookworm4 · 11/04/2019 13:03

@fairenuff
That's crazy, clearly there is a difference 🙄
What is she studying?
