Possible Jordan Peterson webchat on MN

GeordieGenes · 08/04/2019 14:44

If you go over to site stuff, MN are asking posters if they would like a webchat with Jordan Peterson! The thread is pretty negative, but I think it would be great to ask him about gender critical issues. He's one of the only Canadian voices we have!

If you think this would be good, please go and say so on the thread! Smile

I'm completely meh about whether he does a webchat or not. I'm personally sick of his face all over my youtube recommendations but if others want to chat/argue with him, fill your boots.

I'm unclear why you're asking FWR specifically. If we want a Canadian voice what about Meghan Murphy or GNC Central?

LassOfFyvie · 08/04/2019 19:12

I would expect a university to host JP because young people should be exposed ti conflicting ideologies so they can learn to think for thenselves

Jp coming in to MN to tell a group of women (many of whom have STEM careers) that women are just different to men is just a bit pointless

Is It? Is there a cut off age for thinking for yourself? I'm puzzled what you are so frightened of. If you (general you) are so sure he is wrong and he is right what is your problem ?

Ellenborough · 08/04/2019 19:13

I would love this. Will go to the thread.

Ereshkigal · 08/04/2019 19:14

I wouldn't mind Mn inviting a TRA because there is a current debate raging that we can address.

I'd love them to invite any TRA as long as they didn't get to completely dictate the terms. Which would mean that they wouldn't do it.

PineapplePower · 08/04/2019 19:16

*I wouldn't expect a forum for black people in the UK to invite a BNP member round for a chat, they're never going to agree.

I don't see why we'd invite JP round to tell us that women are a bit shit, but hey it's not our fault, it's biology*

Some of us would actually like to hear what he has to say? I think he has something of value when it comes to parenting boys.

LassOfFyvie · 08/04/2019 19:17

Did you hear her giving evidence to the committee considering the C16 Bill? She was embarrassingly awful. Peterson and Theryn Meyer did a much better, although ultimately unsuccessful, effort.

I'm not scared of him and I doubt anyone is. Confused I haven't gone over to the site stuff thread to say I don't want him here but it is being discussed on Fwr so Im discussing it. That's how it works.

I just dont see the point of discussing it with him JP. He isn't anyone relevant to women in the UK. He isn't a politician, he doesn't shape policy. we're just acting like his opinions somehow matter. I'm sick of giving self important men space to tell us about their very important POV.

Ive seen some of his crap and we might as well invite a flat earther, they might also have something interesting to say. Hmm

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 08/04/2019 19:40

If we want a Canadian voice what about Meghan Murphy

now that's a webchat I'd be really enthusiastic about

Peterson is basically awesome at arguing

that's it

doesn't matter if he's making a valid point (and some of the time, when you slow down the word avalanche and analyse what he's saying, it's total mince), all that matters to him is 'winning'

so yep, we could expect a gish gallop from a professional arguer. I don't think I'd participate. I'd totally watch it though - it would be fascinating.

Sitdownstandup · 08/04/2019 19:41

It may or may not be ridiculous, precious and childish lass, but it doesn't have anything to do with the right to free speech.

Did you see her giving evidence to the C16 Bill committee? She was dire.

I have no idea what point you are trying to make. MNHQ own the site and it's up to them who they ask. If however they cave in to demands he should not be asked I hope you'll all be fine the next time Julie Bindel or whatever rad fem poster girl is disinvited to speak somewhere.

Erythronium · 08/04/2019 19:51

Meghan Murphy is a good writer and has interesting things to say, so writing answers to questions from Mumsnetters would suit her very well.

I'd like to see her invited too.

FermatsTheorem · 08/04/2019 19:51

I think you're misrepresenting the FWR thread btw.

Pretty evenly spread between "no, don't want an MRA on here", "yes, interested to see his views challenged," "yes, if only because while I don't like his views on women, I do share his advocacy of free speech," "yes, interesting in his own right," and "up to you MN, but I won't be bothering to take part." With one grossly offensive piece of hyperbole (BNP simile) which has been challenged on thread.

Bit like this thread, really.

Sitdownstandup · 08/04/2019 19:53

Yes, it's very obvious that you have no idea lass. You said it could have something to do with free speech, then keep giving as your reasons things that have nothing to do with free speech.

FerdinandAndHisMassiveBalls · 08/04/2019 19:54

Canada have got an election this year, a politican would be interesting. They got HRC somehow during the American elections. Discuss the current policies as people keep using Canada to proves self ID should be exported elsewhere.

OvaHere · 08/04/2019 19:55

I don't mind him doing a web chat. Some of his views I agree with, many I don't.

I'm fairly sure he would find a MN web chat a more robust experience that he was expecting. Grin

BadPennyNoBiscuit · 08/04/2019 20:02

There are some interesting takes on reality on this thread.

birdsdestiny · 08/04/2019 20:08

I have just replied yes over there. I disagree with most of his views but he is interesting and intelligent. I am not happy with only having people on we agree with.

FerdinandAndHisMassiveBalls · 08/04/2019 20:08

You say challenged but "rilly?" Isnt much of a challenge.

He thinks abortion is wrong, has some fucking interesting ideas about women having access to birth control, lady brains, gay marriage. The BNP have similar views about POC.

He's just your average mediocre white male with too much confidence.

FerdinandAndHisMassiveBalls · 08/04/2019 20:10

'm fairly sure he would find a MN web chat a more robust experience that he was expectin

He'll answer the ones he wants just like they all do. It works as a bit of self promotion for them.

FermatsTheorem · 08/04/2019 20:56

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear... inspired (if that's the right word) by this thread, I went to check out what Peterson actually says. Hmm, Bertrand Russell he ain't. Nor Bronowski (if one is interested in the rise of civilisations). Nor Mary Beard (on the Ancient world). Nor even (if evo psych and sociobiology are your thing) E.O. Wilson.

About a beta minus I'd say.

Ringdonna · 08/04/2019 21:15

Better than being an echo chamber, debate is good.

BadPennyNoBiscuit · 08/04/2019 21:24

Its not a debate. Both sides have views that re incompatible and won't be changed by the views of the other.
One side gets their viewpoint put across as the dominant view wherever they go and the other side cant even define themselves legally any more.

GeordieGenes · 08/04/2019 21:36

Tbf, most people who do a Mumsnet webchat choose the easiest questions. I'm not sure why Peterson is being singled out?

Also, I think he would take on the tricker questions, he isn't afraid of being honest.

TheGoalIsToStayOutOfTheHole · 08/04/2019 21:38

Can't say I would be too interested, but, I just wouldn't read the thread, if others think it a good idea then great.

I find him a little too MRA like for my liking. And he waffles too much. I find it odd when people decsribe him as GC, as he clearly is not, just hes big on being against compelled speech, thats all.

Would be a bit worried about bringing the 'wrath' of his superfans on MN but, meh. We get MRA invasions anyway so whatever Grin
