How can he be so obtuse? I can only assume he has never spent time with children?

I assume it's a reference to the "Disgusted of Tunbridge Wells" phenomenon - people who live in Kent are characterised as the epitome of white middle-class bigotry.

Except Tunbridge Wells was the only part of Kent to vote remain, so he hasn't even got that right.

zanahoria · 08/04/2019 11:29

Its the hallmark of a true twitter moron to argue simply by analogy

hackmum · 08/04/2019 11:30

It's hard to tell whether a) he sincerely believes all this nonsense b) he doesn't really care but has leapt on the most fashionable bandwagon going in order to advance his career or c) he has some sinister motive for supporting giving harmful medication to children.

Popchyk · 08/04/2019 11:35

He doesn't have a point.

He can't quote something from the article and say "I disagree with this point because of x, y and z. And here is my evidence". Nope.

And neither can any of the usual frothers.

Not one of them has stated that anything in the articles is inaccurate and why it is inaccurate; just that The Times should not be allowed to publish these articles.

I hope that ordinary people see the disturbing reaction to these articles from the trans lobby and wake the hell up. There should be alarm bells ringing nationwide.

kendoddsdadsdogsdead18 · 08/04/2019 11:35

Who in their right mind would rather choose to endorse what is increasingly appearing as state approved child abuse and gay conversion & know better than whistleblowing expert? Those articles made me so sad. Not questioning your own stance is a terrible weakness. I saw Jonny best tweet that he questions his views daily, yes, so do I. I wish I could see it the other way, but it's so wrong what is happening. Even if I did agree with TRA's the attack on free speech bad enough.

MagicMix · 08/04/2019 11:36

I'd put money on b.

MagicMix · 08/04/2019 11:36

Out of hackmum's options, I mean.

nauticant · 08/04/2019 11:52

I think Kent is simply a reference to it being a Leave part of the country, for example Dover.

zanahoria · 08/04/2019 11:54

Owen Jones was just in Birmingham reporting on the LGBT teaching in schools issue, the section 28 comment may have worked in that scenario but to wheel it out any time anyone says anything he likes about LGBT issues is plain dumb. The fact that he releases a stock repoonse and won't even put any thought into this specific isssue shows how much he cares about these kids.

he has just tweeted rhis

"I dunno, but if I worked for The Times newspaper with its history of publishing ill-informed and indeed dishonest material which is harmful to already besieged minorities, I might go easy on suggesting others are badly informed"

and retweeting even more nonsense

andyoldlabour · 08/04/2019 12:01

The ONLY parts of the UK which voted "Remain" were - London, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
In the South East there was a 76% turnout and in Kent, only Tunbridge Wells voted "Remain".

RepealTheGRA · 08/04/2019 12:04

He's just a Katie Price for people who shop at Waitrose

🔥 Grin

Freespeecher · 08/04/2019 12:07

If Owen Jones and Bastani are both tweeting similar things it comes across as a concerted effort to Shut It Down.

Thing is, the Times have deep pockets, back their journos and will not be shut down.

Depressing he tries to smear it as Breitbart though - another chapter in the big book of 'Everything I don't like is racist / sexist / transphobic etc'.

(And let's not forget, Breitbart reported on Cologne much earlier than the Graun did. Ah, these inconvenient facts!

ScipioAfricanus · 08/04/2019 12:31

?

My south east constituency voted remain. It’s the first time I felt I was in any accord with it.

ScipioAfricanus · 08/04/2019 12:32

Sorry for quoting errors above.

hackmum · 08/04/2019 12:33

UKIP also has a big profile in Kent, I guess - remember Rochester and Strood? Then again, it also has quite a high proportion of immigrants and asylum seekers, so seeking to characterise Kent commuters as a uniformly reactionary group is lazy at best.

I've just read Lucy Bannerman's longer piece inside the paper, which talks in detail about clinicians' concerns that the Tavistock is using transgender identity as a means of conversion therapy for gay children. It's really difficult to understand why a gay man wouldn't be concerned about this. But OJ's response is never to engage with the arguments, but always to say, in effect: "This publication is a BAD publication, therefore everything it publishes must be BAD." It's hardly worthy of someone with a history degree from one of our top universities.

eddiemairswife · 08/04/2019 12:41

He strikes me as being still in that teenage phase, where every thing is very black and white.
He also appears to have no sense of humour.

Lumene · 08/04/2019 15:27

@hackmum I have it on good authority that it is b) he doesn't really care but has leapt on the most fashionable bandwagon going in order to advance his career

hackmum · 08/04/2019 15:30

Interesting, Lumene! I guess that's going to turn out to be one massive error of judgement on his part.

Lumene · 08/04/2019 15:34

He's just a Katie Price for people who shop at Waitrose

Great analogy although unfair on Waitrose. No one I know who shops in Waitrose thinks he is anything other than a prize twat.

Oh I tell a lie, some of them have never even heard of him.

I think this is a good opportunity to share my all time favourite photo of LOJ.

I rather like the one of Owen Jones & Jess Bradley drinking in first class train carriage & doing cheers to champagne communisim or suchlike... not sure where to find that one... Hmm

ZebrasAreBras · 08/04/2019 16:04

This one, Rowan?

Owen Jones
littlbrowndog · 08/04/2019 16:05

Lols at that pic. Always makes me laugh

littlbrowndog · 08/04/2019 16:06

Wasn’t there a vid where he flounced off a TV set in a frothing fury

R0wantrees · 08/04/2019 16:15

ZebrasAreBras That's the one, thank you.

Im not sure what's happening with regards the allegations against Jess Bradley. It seems extraordinary the length of time NUS, Action For Trans Health and also (I understand) Proud TRust are taking given the serious Safeguarding & Duty of Care issues involved and the impact on vulnerable members of the LGBT+ community
