A really great article. Thanks to all those behind it. Let’s hope we start to see some real changes for these families.

JazzyBBG · 08/04/2019 21:36

Great article! And so glad the LGB are starting to realise the T is not their friend, just a cause shamelessly exploiting them.
The point about plastic surgery was a great one, we wouldn't let a 13 year old get her boobs done if she felt they weren't growing fast enough, we wouldn't let an 11 year old have a nose job... but change gender yeah that's fine...

Found this wee gem on page 18 too.

The Tavi responds:

tavistockandportman.nhs.uk/about-us/news/stories/gender-identity-service-times-8-april-2019/

"We strongly reject the claims made in the articles in the Times. The Service always place a young person’s wellbeing at the centre of our work and have a clear position of independence from outside lobby groups on all sides of the debate.

The Service is safe and all work we undertake is commissioned and regulated by NHS England under strict guidance. The Service has a high level of reported satisfaction and was rated Good by the CQC. There is growing evidence internationally on the outcomes of pubertal suppression and sex hormones in adolescents with gender dysphoria. Thus far, there is little reported evidence of harm.

In the last 18 months the Service has worked very hard to adapt and strengthen structures and processes to accommodate a rapid expansion in the Service and a more diverse and complex patient population.

A recent Review into the Service found no immediate issues relating to patient safety and no overall failing in approach. It did make recommendations to further improve the Service, these will be implemented over the next 12 months building on the work of the Service to date".

Thanks Lucy. Wonderful work.

NeurotrashWarrior · 08/04/2019 21:47

trousering given an academic was refused research into de transitioners, it's highly unlikely research into agp and treatment would ever happen, isn't it.

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 08/04/2019 21:50

That’s not going well for Stonewall is it?!

Transgender Trend responds to Times articles:
(extract)
"We are relieved to see the truth coming out about the experimental medicalisation of children’s healthy bodies in the name of gender identity politics. Revelations from ex-clinicians at the Tavistock clinic come as no surprise to anyone who has had their eyes open over the past few years of increasingly toxic political transgender activism.

As a parent-led organisation we see the appalling damage being done to young people and their families by an ideology which cannot be questioned. Transgender lobby groups have been allowed to dictate an unquestioning ‘affirmation’ approach towards children and young people through pressure applied to the NHS, Tavistock GIDS and professional bodies, along with schools throughout the UK. These same transgender organisations lobby the NHS for drastic medical interventions at ever earlier ages, leaving children sterilised and with compromised sexual function. Teenage girls are being encouraged to believe that having their breasts cut off is the path to becoming ‘who they really are.’

When any debate or questioning is outlawed as ‘bigotry,’ children are put at risk. Any new clinical approach towards children and young people must be informed and developed through impartial research, robust evidence and clinical expertise. Medical treatment of children should not be influenced by the unevidenced ideological claims and bullying tactics of activists intent on silencing professionals through fear.

Children and young people are being failed by a system which has allowed politics and ideology to intrude into clinical and medical practice. In particular, at-risk groups including teenage girls, children who are lesbian or gay, those on the autism spectrum and those with pre-existing mental health disorders, troubled backgrounds or who have suffered previous trauma and abuse are being denied normal therapeutic duty of care" (continues)

concludes:
"It is now time for an independent regulator to be appointed for gender identity services. We call for the puberty blockers trial at Tavistock GIDS to be halted and for all transgender schools guidance and training to be withdrawn pending a full independent inquiry into how lobby groups have been allowed to dictate their agenda to vulnerable children and professional bodies alike. The harms caused to children and young people already cannot be undone, but we have the chance to stop this experiment here. Ethically, as a society, we have no choice. This scandal cannot be allowed to continue."

truthisarevolutionaryact · 08/04/2019 21:58

An excellent response from Trangender Trend. Fascinating to see the level of complete denial from the lobby groups - of course, denial without addressing any of the points.

ZebrasAreBras · 08/04/2019 22:10

Reading some of those twitter responses, I will never understand why people think it's a good idea to hurl abuse at people publishing well-researched articles. It is not a good look.

On the other hand, it must work on occasion, because so many are scared to speak out.

Lucy is doing grand on Twitter - calm, rational and factual.

Kudos Lucy.

I'm sure everyone here has already signed it but just in case:

And if you're on twitter please tweet it and tag in those big names like Sharron and Caroline who can reach a bigger audience.

Dothehappydance · 08/04/2019 22:18

I have the strongest sense that the 'general public' is with gc women on this - on everything from gender neutral loos to women's sport, to medicalising children - that there will be a surge of public opinion against this transideology that makes a mockery of biological sex and science.

I have someone on my fb who thinks feminism is a load of old guff and that the man is the 'head of the household' and all that. She thinks the trans ideology/movement is an even more load of old guff.

At work, most people roll their eyes hard at all the trans stuff, even the younger members of staff.

So whilst the TRA's think that MN is the echo chamber it is only reflecting the general held opinion. People tend not to stick their heads above the parapet as they want to be nice, especially as this is so wide spread. I have many people personally connected on my fb. My aforementioned friend doesn't care if she offends anyone though.

Anlaf · 08/04/2019 22:56

This is excellent to see.

Get ready for the massive upsurge in TRA backlash though
Already seen. We will absolutely be cast as dreadful baddies to try and get people to disengage with these reports.

Mner2019 · 09/04/2019 00:11

Definitely interesting how non of the tweets against the article actually use data or medical experts to refute the article. They’re just tweeting obscenities instead.

#nodebate is failing.

And there's more...

www.thetimes.co.uk/edition/news/psychiatrists-to-draw-up-new-rules-for-child-transgender-treatment-knl3b0g7c
Psychiatrists to draw up guidelines for treatment of child gender issues

The college, which sets professional standards, said that it was talking to paediatric specialists about producing its first guide to such treatment to deal with a rising number of cases and controversies.

The college said that local child mental health services needed to improve how they dealt with young people questioning their gender identity as not all of them required specialist care. It said that there was “no blanket approach” to tackling children’s gender identity.

Bye bye affirmation only.

Can't read rest as paywalled

RedToothBrush · 09/04/2019 01:08

And a Times editorial

The Times view on the treatment of gender dysphoria in children: Identity Check

The NHS needs to establish its protocols rather than leave difficult ethical decisions to the Tavistock clinic

Excerpt

[...]Bernadka Dubicka, chairwoman of the child and adolescent faculty at the Royal College of Psychiatrists, acknowledged the need for clear guidelines for good practice. “Working in child mental health is complex and this area is particularly complex,” she said. “Usually there is no right or wrong immediate answer.”

Young people’s gender identity could be “fluid” and each child needed thorough assessment by senior clinicians, she said. “There is no blanket approach to any one young person, it’s got to be a clinical judgment. Part of the problem is the lack of research evidence so we are more reliant on clinical experience.

“We are talking about developing guidelines but the answers aren’t straightforward . . . we need more research in this area across the board.”

After concerns that some mental health services were reluctant to help children with gender issues and preferred to refer them to Gids, Dr Dubicka said she wanted local services to be trained to do more. “There will be a lot of young people who have concerns or worry about their identity but those concerns might not need specialist treatment,” she said.

A review by the Tavistock and Portman NHS trust, which runs the Gids, has acknowledged the need for a more rigorous consent process for children considering hormone blocking. The trust says that concerns raised by staff have been properly investigated and there are no immediate safety issues but it has committed to a 26-point plan to deal with unjustified variation in treatment because of its rapid growth.

NHS England said: “The NHS’s approach needs to be clinically led but based on consideration of all available research evidence, international standards and public consultation.”
