Horrendous. I used to live in Christchurch, I’m horrified by this. He shot at kids... just horrific.

The whole manifesto is bizarre - it’s like a rollcall of random things that don’t really even make sense together. He says he’s an eco fascist, then says his politics align with the PRC, who are hardly green. Then he lists various memes of groups from serious Nazi stuff to mildly right wing gamers (pewdiepie.)

This is like mansions attempts to create ‘helter skelter’ in the digital age - it’s designed to drive a further wedge between cultures, and between right and left. He openly says that this is his aim. Absolutely bizarre. It’s like his aim is to create the media storm to follow.

There are going to be a lot of calls for further restriction of online platforms on the back of this. Which is exactly what the world doesn’t need - less access to information, and information tightly controlled via a few approved platforms...

Very, very strange, and an horrific outcome. Was he a lone actor or is this a group?

Bowlofbabelfish · 15/03/2019 11:52

Manson not mansion.

Yarnswift · 15/03/2019 11:54

Sorry yes Manson. I’m surprised that’s not been mentioned in the news coverage. It’s absolutely horrendous.

JessicaWakefieldSVH · 15/03/2019 12:04

No way it was alone. He wasn’t in the country long enough to obtain the permits for the weapons and there were more than one person arrested. It’s not just the work of an Australian.

Just a few months ago a rugby player threatened his wife and children with his rifle and then ran over a police officer. He was shot and killed by the other attending. Unfortunately Christchurch is home to much violent angry racist men. It’s sad, really really sad. I truly hope that we see changes to laws after this. Nobody should be able to get their hands on weapons that can do this type of destruction. Period.

Yarnswift · 15/03/2019 12:15

Yeah I ran into a couple of very odd men there. Huge DV rates as well, there’s definitely a dark underbelly to it. There’s a fair amount of ordnance sloshing around as well, definitely on the north island with the grows and stuff and gangs.

I just can’t get my head around the manifesto. It’s like he’s trolling the media, and attached to such a terrible act it’s surreal.

NellieEllie · 15/03/2019 12:19

Desperately awful. So sorry for those who have lost loved ones.

JessicaWakefieldSVH · 15/03/2019 12:23

Huge DV rates as well, there’s definitely a dark underbelly to it. Absolutely. And tomorrow Kiwis will pay money to cheer on a player for the Christchurch crusaders, who got away with beating his partner on the street less than a year ago. But they can’t understand this... I despair.

Thinking of all of you in – and from – NZ today.Sad

For murderers like this, the publicity is as important as the act, so I think the #NoNotoriety protocol may be useful.

It's not about shutting down media and social media coverage, but about how to still talk about it, but reduce how much we do the terrorist's work for them.

NO NOTORIETY MEDIA PROTOCOL
To reduce rampage acts of mass violence due to media-inspired fame.

• Adhere to the journalistic principle to "Minimize Harm," keeping in mind the responsibility of balancing the public's need for information vs. potential harm.

• Recognize that the prospect of infamy serves as a motivating factor for other individuals to kill and inspires copycat crimes

• Report the facts surrounding the mindset, demographic and motivational profile, without adding complimentary color to the individual or their actions, and downplay the individual's name and likeness, unless the alleged assailant is at large.

• Limit the name to once per piece as a reference point, never in the headlines and no photo above the fold. Refuse to broadcast/publish self-serving statements, photos, videos and/or manifestos made by the individual. After initial identification, limit the name and likeness of the individual in reporting, except when the alleged assailant is still at large and, in doing so, would aid in the assailant's capture.

• Elevate the names and likenesses of all the victims killed and/or injured to send the message their lives are more important than the killer's actions.

• Agree to promote data and analysis from experts in mental health, public safety, and other relevant professions to support further steps to help eliminate the motivation behind mass murder.

IT'S A MATTER OF PUBLIC SAFETY
No Name. No Photo. #NoNotoriety.

PerkingFaintly Thank you for sharing that

teyem · 15/03/2019 12:56

Christchurch is really struggling. It had enough problems around racism before the 2011 earthquake but since then the already high suicide stats have gone up 40%, the mental health services are completely swamped, crime rates are up, housing prices are high, insurance companies dragged their asses so that some people were in limbo for years, domestic violence is high, addictions are prevalent, parts of the city are still borked, there was all the houses that got lost to the fecking huge fire in 2017 ...and there are 22 guns per 100 people.

There's a lot of stress and a few easy scapegoats.

JessicaWakefieldSVH · 15/03/2019 12:58

teyem Agreed. 22 guns per 100 people. My goodness. My heart breaks for Christchurch, it’s just too much

nocoolnamesleft · 15/03/2019 13:27

Appalling terrorist act. I can't stop thinking about it. One thing that always gets to me, having been in a hospital lockdown with a mass shooter on the loose in the area, is that the healthcare workers in the hospital, the police, all the people desperately trying to save lives, they will have been doing so without knowing whether their own families were safe.

teyem · 15/03/2019 13:35

I think that was true for a lot of people throughout Chch, we had family members who were locked down at work while their children were locked down at school.

Yarnswift · 15/03/2019 13:38

The hospital was thought to be a target as well for a while.

I have a feeling this won’t be the only attack - he seemed organised.

abuseofpowercomesasnosurprise · 15/03/2019 13:39

It is a horrific tragedy, and of course TRA's are already trying to cash in by equating gender critical defences of women's sex-based rights with white supremacist hate-speech on platforms such as Youtube. Is there no end to their narcissism or how low they're prepared to stoop to demonise women?

That makes my fucking blood boil seeing that, those utter narcissistic wankers. THEY are the ones threatening women’s safety, and threatening any of us who dare speak out. They are comparable to violent men, because so many of them actually are. I hate twitter so I’m not on it but fuck I wish I could give them a piece of my mind.

abuseofpowercomesasnosurprise · 15/03/2019 13:54

I didn't know whether to post or not because this post is about the tragedy, not them, but I was just disgusted when I saw this.

JessicaWakefieldSVH · 15/03/2019 14:10

Only truly terrible people would make this about them.

slug · 15/03/2019 14:19

I'm having real trouble processing this. I know the mosque well. Back when I was studying religions at Canterbury University I spent a lot of time there being patiently coached through the basic Arabic I needed.

I've come to the conclusion that I probably know at least one of the dead. I'm not on Facebook so it's been a slightly surreal experience of trying from half way round the world to tease out from friends and acquaintances an idea of who may be a victim. I really don't want to know but I also feel the need to find out

Yarnswift · 15/03/2019 14:22

abuse

This is exactly what I meant upthread. It will be used to ‘justify’ further repression of free speech.

PeeGreen · 15/03/2019 14:33

It's very male isn't it. He posted to 8chan (which is a forum full of racists, but they do their racism with memes and cute jokes so it's never clear if they are completely serious - no pseudo-intellectualism) before the shooting with a cartoon image of a bloke with a bottle of beer. He also references various memes popular with incel 4chan/8chan types such as 'Remember lads, subscribe to PewDiePie'

There is a lot of sort of casual racism (I mean EVERYWHERE) and jocular memes but I wonder what makes some people take this more seriously.

He actually played 'Remove Kebab' on his drive to the mosque. Remove Kebab is a very camp Serbian nationalistic song which had some comments about Turks posted to it very broken English. knowyourmeme.com/memes/serbia-strong-remove-kebab

The comment is so ridiculous people turned it into a copypasta and laughed at it.

But 'Remove Kebab' became a sort of generic comment about Muslims posted on comments about anything to do with Islam. Because 'it's a meme', there's always the defence that it's a joke.

But it's also directly used by racists, e.g., by Andrew Anglin who wrote 'Trump removes kebab from rally' about a Sikh protester being ejected from his rally.

So it's clearly not a joke. The alt-right made a lot about Trump 'weaponizing memes' ('build the wall' etc.) to win the election, but clearly some men take that 'weaponizing' very literally.

PeeGreen · 15/03/2019 14:41

Just to add, I'm not sure if the BBC are this thick that they can't Google a meme, or they are doing this deliberately:

www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-47579243

"A song which played in the suspect's car is known as a marching anthem for Serbian nationalist paramilitary units known as Chetniks during the 1992-95 Bosnian war.

It praises Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic, who was convicted of genocide and war crimes"

The fact that it praises Radovan Karadzic, or is Serbian is literally irrelevant. The point is that it is 'Remove Kebab', i.e. 'Remove Muslims', and is widely used on the sort of channels he hung out on.

JessicaWakefieldSVH · 15/03/2019 15:10

Racism is pretty rife in both Australia and NZ. It’s tolerated, and that was only going to escalate.
