Brevik, yes. And Timothy McVeigh. The threat from the far right is massive and needs to be taken much more seriously by counter terrorism forces worldwide.

Definitely.

JessicaWakefieldSVH · 15/03/2019 08:09

Christchurch has had a problem with racism and violence for some time. This is quite different but I’m unfortunately not that surprised.

AuntieStella · 15/03/2019 08:15

Police press conference has confirmed that one person has been charged and will appear in court tomorrow morning (NZ time - it's night there now), and that others who were apprended with firearms in the area are still under investigation, but it seems at least one is nothing to do with the incident.

Death toll is now at 49, with abut 40 in hospital

Whatisthisfuckery · 15/03/2019 08:18

Woke up to the news notifications on my my phone. It’s just horrific. How can people do such evil. Love and strength to NZ people, and especially the people touched by this terrible act of hate.

Persifleur · 15/03/2019 08:23

This is absolutely appalling. Heartbreaking and terrifying.

Stuff (which I believe is a legit source) posted this for donations:

Victim Support Fund

Victim Support has set up an official fund for the victims of Friday’s terrorist attack on two Christchurch mosques.

Donations can be made at givealittle.co.nz/cause/christchurch-shooting-victims-fund

All donations received through the fund will be ring-fenced to provide resources and support to those affected by the tragedy.

Victim Support, the Government’s primary provider of services and support to those affected by homicide in New Zealand, is responding to referrals as received from the public and Police. It will continue to do so through the night and the weekend.

But do please check it out yourself.

Persifleur · 15/03/2019 08:24

Apilogies for double post. Terrible connection.

JessicaWakefieldSVH · 15/03/2019 08:30

Stuff is a legitimate source, yup.

Yeahnahyeah · 15/03/2019 08:34

Looks much like a shoot em up video game

This. It’s disturbing how much it looks like a first-person shooter game.

JessicaWakefieldSVH · 15/03/2019 08:45

Winston Peters has played his part in encouraging anti immigrant sentiments. I wonder what questions will be asked of him.

Yeahnahyeah · 15/03/2019 08:52

I agree jessica

i think our police did a fantastic job in finding him and stopping him before he could do more damage and kill more innocent people, its a shame those who were reading and posting on his Facebook before the attack didn't think to themselves fuck hes seriously going to do this and call the police :(

Peridot1 · 15/03/2019 09:09

Utterly horrific. One of my best friends lives in Christchurch. I’m sure everyone is in complete shock.

Thank God they got the guy.

Huge sympathies to everyone affected.

There are no words really. Sad

CaptainMarvelBunting · 15/03/2019 09:22

Couldn't quite believe what news I had woken up to. I'm so overwhelmed with sadness. Words are so inadequate.

Damned good statement from the PM 'you chose us, but we reject you'

3 man and one woman in custody. according to SKY, but it seems as though one of those is unconnected (reports differing between channels). It'l 11pm there, so probably 10 or so hours before we might expect further official updates

JessicaWakefieldSVH · 15/03/2019 10:33

Umm as I understand it, only one involved is foreign. So the PM should take responsibility for her own citizens.

I’ll wait to see if she changes the lax gun laws before I give her any credit whatsoever. Oh and while I’m on it, she should damn well change the laws which allow men who beat women to get off without convictions. Govt is really slack about violent men.

MillytantForceit · 15/03/2019 10:40

CNN from Hong Kong have described the content of the bodycam video showing people begging for their lives before being shot. (Funny how the Chinese internet can censor some things but not others.)

These images will be out there, and probably easily found by searching in a language other than English.

Various platforms say they are doing their best to shut it down.

Do Not Share.

OtepotiLilliane42 · 15/03/2019 11:10

I've been watching hours of local and international coverage on this terrible attack, and its now nearly midnight in NZ.

There have been interviews with ordinary kiwis who got caught up in the shootings, and who leapt out of their cars and trucks to try and help the wounded before police and ambulances arrived.Their grief and disbelief at what they had seen was palpable. Decent brave people whom I salute.

Daisypie · 15/03/2019 11:18

Still just in disbelief.

StarSpangledAnna · 15/03/2019 11:24

Awful to see male violence tearing families and communities apart again.

I agree that there must have been warning signs of this. Its everyone's duty to report if they have suspicions.
