The gift that keeps giving... from a (sorry!) DM article
No, McKinnon. People did not think it was “unfair” for Jesse Owens to compete in the Olympics.
The Nazi government wanted to ban any black or Jewish athletes from the Olympics. Had nothing to do with them thinking it was “unfair”, they thought they were the “superior race” after all. If had to do with them, oh, you know, being racist and the original damn Nazis who murdered millions in the name of their “superior race”.
The US said f that, and if you won’t welcome our athletes - including our black and Jewish ones - we will boycott your Olympics. The US definitely still obviously had and had many issues with racism but they did stand up for their athletes (well, except their Jewish ones ultimately when it got to it but Jesse Owens did compete and did come home with four gold medals).
How can McKinnon even justify using the example of the Nazis - you know, those who murdered millions who they saw as racially, ethnically, intellectually, socially etc inferior - as an example of people thinking it was “unfair” for people of colour to compete in sport?
