I didn't realise Miranda Yardley was in court today over alleged transphobic harrasment.

At Basildon Magistrates Court where Miranda Yardley is on trial for transphobic Harassment. The prosecution applied for reporting restrictions to prevent the complainant Helen Islan from being named. The judge has not granted them. So Helen Islan can be named.

Sending Miranda good luck vibes.

Are you talking about the freckled child already (erroneously) posted + deleted from this thread? That's a completely different family.

Oh! Yes I was. I thought that was Helen, my mistake!

WeRiseUp · 01/03/2019 13:41

Shouldn't 'flying lawyer' just remove the 'f'?

please be careful what you say here

Not being snippy, but what sort of things should we be aware of?

SophoclesTheFox · 01/03/2019 13:44

Is that right, Ewe? 😂 that’s priceless.

JackyHolyoake · 01/03/2019 13:45

"it's magistrates' court so no jury." Yes! Sorry, of course it is! Doh! [I need a glass of wine!]

Iused2BanOptimist · 01/03/2019 13:46

The prosecution applied for reporting restrictions to prevent the complainant Helen Islan from being named.

Of course they did.

Thankful for a judge with common sense.

QuietContraryMary · 01/03/2019 13:46

"A polite reminder that this is a public prosecution, tried by jury, so please be careful what you say here. Thanks."

It's in the Magistrates Court so no jury.

It's being reported as a 'judge' (so sub judice would not apply), though if it is in fact a panel of magistrates it likely would.

MillytantForceit · 01/03/2019 13:49

Some cases in Magistrate Courts are head by a district judge or recorder sitting alone with no jury.

There is never a jury.

"In making the application for reporting restrictions the defendant’s counsel referred to ‘extreme supporters’ as reason to fear identification." Joani Walsh

Going back into court. Helen Islan will be cross-examined. There is a great deal to unpick from her statement.

QuietContraryMary · 01/03/2019 13:52

the defendant's counsel? Doesn't she mean the "victim's" counsel?

Fink · 01/03/2019 13:54

Just when you think the whole TW = W thing had reached peak farce ...

NoseringGirl · 01/03/2019 14:01

I'm sorry this is happening to Miranda but hopefully this will serve to highlight how ridiculous this whole thing has become.
ThanksCakeWine for Miranda!

OvaHere · 01/03/2019 14:04

This is ridiculous. Just when you think their can't possibly be another peak to climb!

Hopefully the judge sounds sensible and will draw a line under this nonsense.

SonicVersusGynaephobia · 01/03/2019 14:07

Come on Sonia, I need more info than that! Grin

TallulahWaitingInTheRain · 01/03/2019 14:07

Gin for Miranda

IDoN0tCare · 01/03/2019 14:08

I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall when the judge refused to toe the line and give in to demands. They’re so used to everyone bending over backwards for them.

Good luck Miranda, but I doubt you’ll need it.

silentcrow · 01/03/2019 14:12

Just when you think it can't get weirder. Solidarity, Miranda, do look after yourself.

Dear journalists reading: can you PLEASE join up the bloody dots in the press now? Not single articles about GIDS, or Martina having thoughts, or Karen White. Lay it all out like the hydra it is; because this case is one of the logical end points.

Katvonfelttipeyebrows · 01/03/2019 14:17

"Extreme supporters "

Oooooo that's mumsnet and Jenni Murray

Truly extreme and terrifying

I think Helen meant "people who disagree with me" there. Ridiculous woman

hackmum · 01/03/2019 14:18

If this is a CPS prosecution, why do Joani's tweets refer to Helen Islan's lawyers? If the case is being brought by the CPS, then Helen wouldn't have her own lawyers. She would simply be a witness for the prosecution.

caganer · 01/03/2019 14:18

Good luck Miranda! Sorry I couldn't make it in the end.

VanGoghsDog · 01/03/2019 14:22

@MrsBertBibby

Oh I see. Helen identifies as anonymous.

Lol! :)

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 01/03/2019 14:26

It's like the colonialism that Comic Relief is being accused of

"I am not trans, but the trans community need me to save them from a trans person whom I believe to be transphobic"

She needs a pic of Stacy Dooley giving wee Desmond a hug. That'll fix it.

MhairiV · 01/03/2019 14:26

This "extreme supporters" and "literal violence" idea is infuriating. Never mind the long history of people who have been murdered, assaulted, tortured, raped, locked up (and god knows what else) for their views - not liking what other people have to say on bloody social media or at women's meetings does not qualify as extreme.
