(Apols if there’s a thread already, I couldn’t see one)

Billy Porter wore a gown to the Oscars and I am LOVING his rationale as described in the Vogue article. Challenging gender stereotypes all the way. “I’m a man in a dress.” Bloody brilliant.

A friend of mine is cursing him - he had planned to wear the same outfit to his wedding later this year! Grin

I haven't looked at the link but i assume it was that beautiful black tuxedo velvet ballgown

Oh it was fabulous and so was he!!!

EntirelyAnonymised · 25/02/2019 11:33

It was a beautiful outfit, for sure

SharkBastard · 25/02/2019 11:38

He looked amazing. I love the dress, never heard of him though, but it's worked!

JudgeRulesNutterButter · 25/02/2019 11:39

I am possibly overexcited to have something GC and positive to share on Facebook. Grin It feels like a good step forward for equality to see a man wear a dress at such a high profile event.

Looks fabulous

This is really enlightening for me personally. 2 years ago I would probably have thought it ridiculous. Now due to the whole trans issue the scales have fully fallen from my eyes re the harm in gender stereotypes and I welcome Billy Porter in his fabulous dress. I do hope this same realisation is happening en masse

RockyFlintstone · 25/02/2019 12:00

I loved it!

Some TRA on twitter said that 'mumsnet will probably go into meltdown' over the dress, which shows how little they get it.

Bebstar123 · 25/02/2019 12:08

I love that. I had a Black Velvet gown I kept for formals, with a small silver catch at the neck, I always thought of it as my 'tuxedo dress', but this is so much better.

TowelNumber42 · 25/02/2019 12:11

He looked fantastic. I love what he said

My goal is to be a walking piece of political art every time I show up. To challenge expectations. What is masculinity? What does that mean? Women show up every day in pants, but the minute a man wears a dress, the seas part. It happened to me at the Golden Globes [when I wore a pink cape], and I was like, really? Y’all trippin’? I stopped traffic! That Globes outfit changed everything for me. I had the courage to push the status quo. I believe men on the red carpet would love to play more.

So true. I am a woman who dresses like a man a lot of the time. Men don't have that same opportunity and it is getting worse for them. Be a man in a dress and people start asking you if you are a she and a ma'am instead of either just completely ignoring it as unremarkable or being normal about clothes like saying Love your dress Dave. Does it have pockets?

OvaHere · 25/02/2019 12:14

I think it's great, I'm all for quirky fashion. A lot of the high end pieces are more akin to art than anything else. Refreshing when the wearer doesn't think that clothes magically make them change sex.

GerryblewuptheER · 25/02/2019 12:33

Love it!!!

youllhavehadyourtea · 25/02/2019 12:35

I thought he looked stunning. He wore it so well. He did look like walking art.

VickyEadie · 25/02/2019 12:37

Looked fabulous. Men should feel free to wear whatever they want. Doesn't make them women.

HearMeSnore · 25/02/2019 12:43

He looked amazing. Absolutely carried it off. Good for him.

Floisme · 25/02/2019 12:44

Fabulous. Who knows, if it were more acceptable for men and boys to dress up like this, maybe we might have been spared some of the current nonsense.

My only gripe is that I wish he'd said whether he was wearing a corset, and if he was, what it felt like.

WokerThanWoke · 25/02/2019 12:45

It is also refreshing to see a man in typically feminine clothing who then also doesn’t feel the need to look like a caricature of a female as well.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 25/02/2019 12:46

I loved it too, especially the way he kept swishing the skirt. It looked really really good, and bizarrely I didn't think it looked at all like a dress IYSWIM.

I wonder how long until he is told he is a tw with internalised transphobia...

Mner2019 · 25/02/2019 13:22

Love it! So refreshing. I wish these things could be more normalised. My gorgeous boy (7y) is torn between his love of dressing up like this and the stereotypes especially as he is one of the more boisterous boys.

Hasnt will Smith's son worn a skirt before too?

We definitely need more of this!

MargueritaPink · 25/02/2019 13:35

It did look like a dress. Odd the way that a man wearing a dress and high heels is lauded to skies on here but a woman wearing the same is just a brainwashed victim of patriarchy.

whatsthecomingoverthehill · 25/02/2019 13:41

Really MargueritaPink? I'd be interested to see where that has happened.

MogPlus · 25/02/2019 13:45

That is spectacular!

EntirelyAnonymised · 25/02/2019 13:48

Hasnt will Smith's son worn a skirt before too?

And Beckham in his ‘sarong’.

DorindaLestrange · 25/02/2019 13:50

Now that is fabulous. We need more of this.
