Billy Porter wore a gown to the Oscars and I am LOVING his rationale as described in the Vogue article. Challenging gender stereotypes all the way. “I’m a man in a dress.” Bloody brilliant.

Just read that Olivia Colman's gown had pockets...

The two questions with clothing are, I think, whether the socially acceptable choices are constrained according to your sex, and whether what is acceptable and available in female sizes and fitttings is as functional.

On a catwalk, high heels (provided you can walk in them) and a frock may be more 'functional' than a bland tux.

On a day out with small kids, a full skirt may be as functional as trousers, but footwear choices may determine whether the child can fully participate in all activities.

For me, it’s because it’s rare in this current climate to find people who “smash the gender binary” in a way that I’d recognise as gender critical

IDoN0tCare, Billy Porter was in the stage musical of Kinky Boots not the film. The guy in the film is Chiwetel Ejiofor the gentleman who plays the Black Panther in the Marvel films.

Sorry the only pictures I can find of him after the Oscars without the tuxedo bit were in the Daily Fail. It gives the dress a completely different vibe.

Ahh that makes sense, UatuTheWatcher I kept comparing photos and thinking how completely different he looked in the film. I’m crapnwuth faces, I mean really really crap, as in I could meet you a couple of times but still wouldn’t recognise you in the street. Very embarrassing. I could see the difference, but kept thinking it was my facial blindness. 🤣

You are right mrsbertbibby. DH and I were having a conversation the other day about the actors that could play Panther and we both favoured Chiwetal and was getting myself muddled up, so sorry. He actually played Mordo in Dr Strange so obviously couldn’t play the Black Panther. Sorry to confuse everyone.
