I'm so pleased to see this. I've been a big fan of Martina since I was a kid and this just makes her go up even higher in my estimation:

Oh, I love this. Martina was so rattled by the initial flaming she received. She was made to believe she’d said something SO wrong and, IIRC, she apologised and deleted the offending tweet(s).

I am SO glad she’s come back to say “No, fuck this” so publically.

Datun · 17/02/2019 19:21

Truly hilarious how much McKinnon is furiously tweeting about this and there is pretty much no engagement from anyone. What a loser.

I thought it was me doing it wrong. But no, no one is listening. Rats and a sinking ship come to mind.

DisrespectfulAdultFemale · 17/02/2019 19:33

Good to see the pasting The Guardian is getting on Twitter.

Thingybob · 17/02/2019 19:37

I do admire the tenacity and resolve of Rachel. She was tweeting about this when the story went live last night and is still at it so presumably hasn't slept?

FloralBuntingIsObnoxious · 17/02/2019 19:38

For tenacity and resolve see narcissist frantically attempting to cling to control as the situation slides out of their grasp....

terryleather · 17/02/2019 20:06

Good to see the pasting The Guardian is getting on Twitter.

Isn't it just!

hackmum · 17/02/2019 20:07

Very satisfying indeed to see the response on Twitter to the Guardian. About 95%, if not more, attacking the Guardian's stance. Any chance the Guardian might wake up and realise that it's losing its female readership?

For one of the comments Twitter gave me a "sensitive content" warning. I clicked View anyway and it turned out to be an entirely reasonable comment from Nic Williams of FPFW. Unbelievable.

Mumfun · 17/02/2019 20:09

Martina was so demonstrably fair, informed thoughtful and wrote so well. Total win.

Guardian article a disgrace and a total embarassment and shows the reason I will not subscribe

arunadasi · 17/02/2019 20:13

McKinnon tweets: Damn, y’all. She sure holds a grudge. She also has NO idea what years of HRT does to some trans women’s sperm (i.e., eliminates the ability to make it after a long enough time).

So you want to be a woman and still make sperm? The Emperor gets more naked day by day!

Sjofn · 17/02/2019 20:17

Well Guardian if you're reading you've put me right off. And I used to love lazy Saturday/Sunday mornings reading you and the Observer all the supplements ...

EweSurname · 17/02/2019 20:24

Looooooool

Martina speaks out!
Bananasarenottheonlyfruit · 17/02/2019 20:37

Pretty sure it isn't the sperm that ride the bike either!

I really don't understand how these people cannot understand that it isn't about their genitals being used for the sport in question. It is about bone, muscle, size, strength. All those things which come from having grown to adulthood as a natal male. But maybe that's because I have an under developed little lady brain.

AnyOldPrion · 17/02/2019 20:39

This from the Guardian:

”Under guidelines introduced by the International Olympic Committee in 2016, trans men are able to compete without restriction, while trans women must demonstrate that their testosterone level has been below a certain cutoff point for at least one year before their first competition.”

The fact that it’s an uneven playing field is obvious even from this. The insanity of assuming just reducing male hormones to levels that (even then) are nowhere near women’s levels somehow evens things up is crazy. If you want to know how crazy, just compare a bull that has been castrated after puberty with a steer that was castrated before. There’s no comparison in physique. And castrating a bull after puberty will never create a creature anything like a cow, no matter how many feminising hormones you shove into him.

Exactly the same applies in humans.

It really is nonsense.

But Martina is the kind of big name we really need behind us. Thank you Martina for your incredible courage.

FloralBuntingIsObnoxious · 17/02/2019 20:44

Chuckling at the idea of someone thinking they're going to come off as one of the good ones by saying if a woman challenges McKinnon they will be watched.

Cyclepath indeed.

Popchyk · 17/02/2019 20:45

Ha.

Those Twitter comments on The Guardian's twitter account are great.

Team Martina all the way.

20nil · 17/02/2019 20:57

God, I hate the Guardian. Their GC journalists must be furious too.

FloralBuntingIsObnoxious · 17/02/2019 20:58

So, I was reading this bag o shite.

www.outsports.com/platform/amp/2019/2/17/18227992/martina-navratilova-trans-athletes-are-men-competing-as-women-is-unfair?utm_campaign=outsports&utm_content=chorus&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter&__twitter_impression=true

And in amongst the total bollocks, I read this sentence...

For a lesbian, Navratilova does seem overly concerned with penises

Can I just get a clarification? Is it transphobic to suggest that lesbians don't like penises, or is it not? The rules are always changing, so I wanted to be sure...

Popchyk · 17/02/2019 21:00

Hadley Freeman has tweeted "Solidarity with @Martina, a lifelong fearless champion of women, gay rights and fairness. A world class champion who overcame enormous homophobia and had a trans woman coach, she is what a shero looks like"

But then Hadley has never been "on message" at The Guardian.

Thankfully.

McTufty · 17/02/2019 21:19

Paris Lees has tweeted that excess testosterone is only a problem when trans women are perceived to have it. Would someone care to bring Caster Semenya to her attention?

Really surprised Paris is doubling down on this.

HotpotLawyer · 17/02/2019 21:23

I like this tweet on the Outsports thread (not by Outsports):

"You clearly have no idea how important a level playing field is for women, whose bodies have been bound up & tied down for centuries & for whom sports and fair athletic competition are ways to experience strength & autonomy. No genuine sportsperson would want to colonise that."

HotpotLawyer · 17/02/2019 21:26

"However if you take the logic genitals have nothing to do with sport, what do they have to do with, other than DTD / making babies?"

Rape? Indecent exposure / flashing? Sticking in dead pig's heads?

FloralBuntingIsObnoxious · 17/02/2019 21:36

Oh, Paris Lees, the one who went on that reality programme and played the part of the wan and fainting female? Pfft.

NotTerfNorCis · 17/02/2019 21:42

played the part of the wan and fainting female?

Lees' performance on that show was odd. Everyone else was mucking in one way or another, but Lees was lounging about acting helpless. I got the impression it was genuine physical weakness, maybe connected to Lees' medical treatment. Who knows.

SonicVersusGynaephobia · 17/02/2019 22:06

I have really, really enjoyed today Smile

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 17/02/2019 22:12
