Womb transplants for trans women are a human right, says surgeon

www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/transgender-women-should-entitled-womb-13972102

"Because once the medical community accept this as a treatment for cis-women with uterine infertility, such as congenital absence of a womb, then it would be illegal to deny a trans-female who has completed her transition.

"The most important step is the harvesting from the donor as great care is required to avoid damage to the arteries and veins supplying the uterus.
Trans females have a much narrower pelvis than cis-women of the same height, but there would still be room for them to carry a child.

“Supplemental hormones could be taken to replicate the changes that occur in the body when a woman is pregnant.

Thank you all for the kind words 💐

I had a fertility troll pm me to say I was a shitty person and infertility was karma. The bellend.

The you've got a womb person was an exceptional me-railer. I'm glad they don't post here any more.

FeministCat · 10/02/2019 22:23

Was that the same poster as the one who claimed their vagina was better than a real one because it was tighter, cleaner and didn't smell like fish (paraphrasing them!!)

Which goes to show how little that person actually know about vaginas. You know, those self-cleaning parts of a woman’s anatomy made of highly-elastic tissue supported by muscles (to allow contraction). If it smells like “fish” it is because of either an infection or leftover sperm residue.

But yeah, I guess it is is “better” to have an inverted penis, sometimes using colon tissue or peritoneal tissue (so speak about potential smells...), and skin grafts, that you need to dilate regularly for life and that is most definitely not self cleaning...he can have it.

Smotheroffive · 11/02/2019 00:55

better than a real vagina? There is only a real vagina! Or the pretend ones that try to be like an actual proper real one, but arent

workoutg · 11/02/2019 01:34

Hate to say it but this is where PC culture has taken us.

SignMeUp · 11/02/2019 02:56

I suppose the placenta will materialize straight out of post-modern theory

Ereshkigal · 11/02/2019 09:17

Well she's of the belief this has already been done with another transwomans...I've yet to find any evidence of this.

It really hasn't. Or any other male person. As pp mentioned, Lili Elbe died in the attempt.

R0wantrees · 11/02/2019 09:33

Hate to say it but this is where PC culture has taken us.

Or that it has been exploited by a men's rights movement?

There have been a number of male transpeople who on Mumsnet FWR have sought to apppropriate women's experiences of infertility. It has been utterly crass and revealed they are devoid of empathy, compassion, respect or regard for anyone other than themselves.

It happened to me on the boards last year, it happens on other social media platforms more frequently.

On Victoria Derbyshire Show and Channel 4's Genderquake debate last year, prominant TRAs Rebecca Root and Munroe Bergdorf sought to appropriate the experience of women who have hysterectomies to similarly claim being a woman eg some women have hysterectomies as are still women, male transpeople who identify as trans women don't have a uterus either, therefore they are also women. Neither hosts, VD or Cathy Newman challenged these statements which as well as being disrespectful of women's experiences are also logically flawed.

There are many younger women disgnosed with gyny cancers (and other medical conditions) who have had to have a hysterectomy or treatments with cause infertility. As a consequence of these neccessary medical interventions any hopes to start a family are also often ended.

A 2009 study showed why this is unlikely to be the case.

Perhaps this surgeon should more deeply consider the ethics of what he already does before advocating extending the range of ethically dubious (to put it mildly!) procedures?

Just wanted to applaud this excellent post way upthread by FactsAreNotMean

Women:
-We're going to limit access to IVF, it'll be a postcode lottery as it costs so much/having a baby isn't a right/
-Don't eat pate/blue cheese/runny eggs/anything apart from organic knitted veg in case you damage the baby
-Don't drink
-Don't take medication. Even paracetamol should be used sparingly.
-^We don't know if that medication which we need to give you for is safe for baby/breastfeeding because it wouldn't be ethical for us to experiment
-You're selfish/lazy for wanting a c-section. They cost more money! Pregnancy is a choice, you selfish harridan^

Men:
-Take a shit ton of hormones to try and replicate the female system
-add in some anti-rejection drugs
-have a c-section
-take a tonne of drugs to try and induce milk
-pack a load of drugs in to your body which might transmit to baby. No ethics issues here
-Oh, an expensive transplant surgery, plus expensive IVF treatment..we can totally fund that!

Fuck that shit.

Bowlofbabelfish · 11/02/2019 12:16

Someone I know recently needed the morning after pill. She’s breastfeeding and was told to pump and dump while she took it.

But pack a bloke full of hormones and that’s grand. Hmm

Smotheroffive · 11/02/2019 13:20

Eeeeurgh! Just read the study that said there's intestinal bacter ia inside the neovagina! What is the purpose of the neovagina? A flacid cavity, gathering bacteria and noself-cleaning like a vagina.

misscockerspaniel · 11/02/2019 13:26

Next, we will be hearing about vagina transplants. Remember, your read it here first Grin

BlooperReel · 11/02/2019 13:32

If this becomes an actual 'thing', I will absolutely withdraw my consent to have my organs donated, if there is even the slightest chance it would be used in this fucked up Mary Shelley nightmare, I will have no part in it.

You have hospitals who will not reveal babies sex at a scan for fear of 'preferred sex' abortions, but you have dickheads like this surgeon happily going along with this dangerous, delusional Frankenstein shit that could result in the death not just of the TW, but any foetus they attempt to gestate unnecessarily.

Smotheroffive · 11/02/2019 13:39

Mee too on the organ transplant...withdrawing consent now. Fuck that shit! I don't want any part of my female body involved in risking future babies lives, pregnancy and childbirth (and ebf) are hard enough on a woman and baby, potentially life threatening and take such a toll already without forcing it to happen in an alien environment supported by numerous drugs that cause problems of their own.

reallyanotherone · 11/02/2019 13:46

Tbf, i kind of assumed the whole kit and caboodle would be transplanted. Transplanting just the uterus doesn’t make sense, it would be transplanted along with the cervix and vagina. You can’t remove the cervix from the uterus.

hipsterfun · 11/02/2019 13:53

My uterus is past it for transplants, but were I a younger woman I’d want to opt out of donating it.

Men can fuck right off, and I’m not sure I’d be happy donating to a woman either if there might be potential for exploitation of egg/embryo donors.

MostlyBoastly · 11/02/2019 13:55

How much of a male-mindset do you need to think that a tighter, better scented neo-vagina equates to a better vagina. It doesn’t exist for men FFS. The best vagina is... drumroll... an actual vagina.

FeministCat · 11/02/2019 13:59

You can’t remove the cervix from the uterus.

You can do partial hysterectomies that leave the cervix, so yes, you can remove the cervix from the uterus. The rhetoric on this so far is often about woman (including trans man) donating their uterus as live donors and so far I have not seen it get as crazy as suggesting they also trade in their vagina (not to day it is not coming as another “right” trans women should have - the right to a woman’s own vagina).

Datun · 11/02/2019 14:01

Eeeeurgh! Just read the study that said there's intestinal bacter ia inside the neovagina!

Can someone explain this to me?

Is intestinal bacteria a result of faecal matter? Which surely will be cleaned off any bit of intestine that they are going to be using?

I've never quite understood this bit.

Ereshkigal · 11/02/2019 14:01

My uterus is past it for transplants, but were I a younger woman I’d want to opt out of donating it.

I'm sure I read somewhere that unlike the ovaries, age isn't much of an issue.

misscockerspaniel · 11/02/2019 14:04

Reallyanotherone The "leading British surgeon" is quoted in the Daily Mirror as saying:
"The actual "plumbing in" is straightforward...With a uterus transplant in a trans-female, the neovaginal would be opened at the pelvic end to accept the donor womb. And the same procedure is used in a cis-female transplant with the donor uterus being attached to the native vagina".

reallyanotherone · 11/02/2019 14:08

You can do partial hysterectomies that leave the cervix, so yes, you can remove the cervix from the uterus

I realise that, i’d be suprised if removing the cervix would leave a uterus with any sort of function, let alone able to be transplanted and carry a child.

My understanding of transplanting organs is limited, but generally the more of the surrounding tissue you have the better. Which is why heart/lung transplants are easier than just heart, kidneys need ureters and as much of the blood vessels etc as possible.

So I would have thought a uterus transplant would automatically include major blood vessels, fallopian tubes, cervix and probably vagina. Just thinking of the necessary attachments. If you remove the fallopian tubes and cervix you’ve nothing left to work with, and I doubt simply stitching up 3 holes will work.
