I’ve just read this. Apparently they wanted 1 measly hour for women to swim, without men.
1 hour. The rest of the time, the pool is available for men and women. This is Girton college, a women’s only college, Cambridge.

A man was outside protesting apparently. Angry

@R0wantrees: as far as I have been able to tell from the younger gendercrown, non binary means "young and thin with a sort of androgynous haircut".

In terms of politically influential people Edward Lord & Gregor Murray (who are both male) identify as non-binary.

Its a requirement in many places including here that Lord and Murray's compelled preferred pronouns they/their/them are used.

Edward Lord (of City of London, masons, partner of Meg-John Barker etc etc) is an honorary life member of the NUS...! Wonder what influence he still has over them... hmm

(All these lines lead to each other and big tangled mess, don't they?)"

There are older, less thin people with a range of hairstyles also identifying as non-binary.

Its entirely nebulous.

ErrolTheDragon · 06/02/2019 15:32

We could probably quench enthusiasm for identifying as non binary gender if all gc feminists did so... because, heck, we know that the idea of gender being binary is silly.

'Yes, dear, of course you're non-binary, so am I, and your dad, and your aunties and uncles'HmmGrin

I'd be fairly sure the girton 'women and non-binary' with ''Men, please be respectful and do not come in' was aimed merely at being inclusive of females including those who are going through a phase of not wanting to be called women, and they'd not thought it through very well.

It may have been avoided by simply stating this is a single sex swim session for females.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 06/02/2019 20:26

But why would you want to go to a women only session if you are wanting distance from your sex?

Unlike prison and so forth - and I'm not agreeing with lucydo here Grin - swimming is a lower risk activity and mixed sex is the usual.

Anyway TBF none of it makes logical sense.

I have had a couple of chats with DD recently as she's started going to school independently. Including one triggered by an incident at a nearby school with a man following a girl.

i can't imagine many parents have chats with their 11yo sons about this specific risk?

Growing up female is v tricky, I'm sure boyhood is too, periods + the way men start to look at you (and poss more) as soon as your boobs start to grow is for a lot of girls really distressing. Who wouldn't want to ID out of that change from a child and no-one really looks your way to sex object in the eyes of way too many men?

Anyway we've been over this a million times.

My DD "ids" as non binary on things she's on, I don't blame her TBH. if I was her age now I'd be the same.

R0wantrees · 06/02/2019 21:05

There are male people who identify as non-binary though.
Presumably they would have been able to attend.

Maybe the point of the poster protest is that by saying non-binary and women, this makes the session mixed sex?

Males can opt out of the category 'men' by being transgender and / or non-binary.

R0wantrees · 06/02/2019 21:07

Jess Bradley (NUS trans officer) identifies as a non-binary transwoman.

Jess Bradley was suspended from NUS post following allegations that she had taken pictures of her penis in public places including (I believe) her place of work and had published these.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 06/02/2019 22:57

Well sure-

Pp suggested maybe they were thinking their women and non binary meant female

But non binary women are unlikely to attend

Men who fancy going to it, for whatever reason, much more so.

It is a pretty measly demand agreed. Surely they could have sensibly asked for one hour and proposed the men had one too. If it’s no inconvenience then surely the opposite remains as true? Anyway like people have said many women aren’t happy with it anyway as it includes men who identify as female one hour of the week may by sure luck happens to be that exact hour in the entire week when the women only policy is in place).

Lemoncakestrudel · 08/02/2019 07:44

feminism should be about having some balls really? I thought feminism was about the fact that we do not and therefore have different needs and experiences.
I’m so glad that lucydo is here to tell us that we’re doing feminism wrong and that women’s very real fears should not be catered to for one hour a week.
