The thread I wrote about attending Posie Parker's panel on gender identity and social media has attracted a lot of attention, and I thought it might be good to establish more of a dialogue. Ask me anything!

Also, to get this one out of the way: my babysitting rates are £15/hr, plus flights, and I'll provide a clean CRB check 😂

How can someone say that you cannot change race because of the genetic difference caused by different alleles which control surface differences such as skin and eye colour, but you can change from male to female which is controlled by having different sex chromosomes? How can people not see the massive inconsistency in this?

Not to mention how racist it is.

They are saying that white men and women are more similar to each other than they are to black men or women.

clairestandish · 31/01/2019 09:21

The failure to even just define ‘woman’ ‘man’ ‘boy’ ‘girl’ is ridiculous. Someone identifies as a woman... which is? How is ‘anyone who identifies as one’ a definition?? It just goes round in circles and doesn’t actually provide a definition!! What are the differences between the group who identify as men and the group who identify as women?

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 31/01/2019 09:27

The whole 'exclusion' thing irritates me. There are lots of things I am excluded from - some through a physical lack in me, some because I don't have the right qualifications etc etc.

Am I sad about some of the things I am excluded from? Yes, I am.

But do I strop like a toddler in a tantrum when people, who aren't excluded from whatever it is, want to discuss it, and have specific words/phrases they use in that discussion? No, of course I don't - because I am a grown up, and mature enough to know that I can't be part of everything, and everything cannot change to keep me happy!!

This is why I am so pissed off about 'chestfeeding' instead of breastfeeding, and bleeders/menstruators instead of women having periods!!

The TRAs want our gender, our protections, our safety, our words - and don't give a single damn about erasing us to get them. Erasing our words is a big step towards this.

My other question would have been about the inclusion of penises in women only spaces.

Under UK law I have a protection against men showing me their penises without my consent. I'm protected by the 2003 Sexual offences act.

If I go into a women's changing room and a man enters and shows his penis, he is breaking the law.

If that person says they are a trans women, the penis becomes what, exactly? And what has happened to my rights under law? Does the law protect me from the organ itself? Or are some penises illegal in that situation, whereas others are simply an opportunity for me to show my inclusivity and validation for the feelings of the person with the penis?

Ereshkigal · 31/01/2019 09:36

No, of course I don't - because I am a grown up, and mature enough to know that I can't be part of everything, and everything cannot change to keep me happy!!

Their insistence that it should is purely about power and control over female people they see as inferior. Duluth wheel stuff.

Ereshkigal · 31/01/2019 09:37

That's my reading of it.

CallMeSirShotsFired · 31/01/2019 09:38

I try and look forward to when all these woke young bluehairs are adults with real lives and jobs and responsibilities.

I hope they have the grace to apologise for the devastation they wrought.

Ereshkigal · 31/01/2019 09:38

It's arguable as no one has challenged under the EA based on privacy and dignity of women.

Ribosomes · 31/01/2019 09:40

And if it is the case that some penises are OK in some circumstances and others not, how long will it be before Male penis owners start to suggest that their penises are being discriminated against?

Ereshkigal · 31/01/2019 09:43

Leaving aside that all penis owners are male, yes I agree that male people who aren't transgender might have a discrimination claim in some circumstances.

NotBadConsidering · 31/01/2019 09:44

The questions and lack of answers in this thread could have been asked 5 years ago, 10 years from now, 50 years from now, and there would still be no way of answering these questions without ignoring logic and science. The fact of this and the unchanging status of logic and science makes it utterly baffling as to why we still even need to be having a discussion.

Ribosomes · 31/01/2019 09:46

'Leaving aside that all penis owners are male, yes I agree that male people who aren't transgender might have a discrimination claim in some circumstances.'

Well yes. But I thought I would phrase it that way to highlight the insanity of the situation.

If anyone is interested in what may be a more serious attempt to define a rational position they might be interested in this thread

Good example of the issue with penises in female spaces, Ribo.

WokeNotBloke · 31/01/2019 09:49

Delurking to say thank you for this thread.
It really helped me understand. I couldn’t put my muddled thought process into words before; now I feel that I can explain my unease and give rational clear reasons when challenged about why I feel deeply uncomfortable with self-identifying as female meaning unchallenged access to safe female only spaces.
People who responded; you weren’t just talking to Liz.

Phew 🤪

The end 😊

I think this thread has demonstrated the 8th law, any others?

LangCleg · 31/01/2019 09:53

If someone tells me that they are a woman because they feel like one and then cannot go on to explain what feelings those actually are, and then says they feel better around women but then also have a baseball bat to use against those same people they 'feel better' around, it makes me think that it is about having power and control of that group of people not about feeling better with those people.

This. And it's the same old shit from time immemorial.

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 31/01/2019 09:57

it made me think of number 3

3rd rule of misogyny: Women speaking for themselves are exclusionary and selfish

If Liz is still around at all, I'd genuinely love to know what Liz thinks about Seven Hex's blog and views on all this.

It's Seven's birthday today too. Happy Birthday!

I showed DD(7) The Flumps recently. She was unimpressed.

Mine too. Although she quite likes Bagpuss so I have forgiven her.

Good post Ribo.

Quite.

But, as Lisa said upthread, many scientists, Drs and other professionals have been complicit in this deceit for a while.

They feel better around women because they can put us in our place - below them in the pecking order. That must give quite a powerful emotional kick.

Being in a place you're not supposed to be, when the inferior people there can't refuse your presence no matter how much they resent it, is very empowering. Must be how a member of the British Raj felt when stalking around making the locals bow and scrape. And you get to wear a uniform! A lovely uniform. 🤣🤣🤣
