This popped up on my face book.

It is not going to solve all our problems but encouraging men to challenge other men’s behaviour is a good start.

Am I the only one who has a bit of an issue with this?

No. The film itself is quite nice - it shows men as victims of patriarchy in many ways in addition to the harms perpetrated on women. No reason for silly men to throw wallies.

BUT - by the time Proctor and Gamble are repeating a political message for woke points, you can be entirely sure that any radical potential for change in that message has been lost to commercial opportunity.

userschmoozer · 15/01/2019 13:39

I'm curious to see if they will remove it on the back of the negative response from MRA's.

OvaHere · 15/01/2019 13:57

Glad it's not just me Lang.

It's only a few short months since P&G threw their hat in the ring against UK women trying to protect their rights under the Equality Act so as lovely and heartwarming as this advert might appear on the surface P&G do not give an actual shit about women.

For those that are newer here the Metro ad linked (that P&G sponsored) was a direct response and rebuke to the FairPlayForWomen ad that was placed trying to raise awareness about the loss of single sex spaces and services as part of the GRA.

If P&G want to do better they can start with themselves and not support the erosion of women's rights.

LangCleg · 15/01/2019 14:12

Exactly, Ova.

Never see a corporate ad campaign as anything other than manipulative, even if you like (or agree with) the content. I don't like the commercialisation of politics. That is, in large part, what has got us where we are.

Datun · 15/01/2019 14:30

It will be manipulative, I'm sure. Although quite what it hopes to achieve, given that there are far more many down votes, than upvotes, I'm not sure.

My thinking is that if women supporting Gillette will make them do more ads like this, instead of the 'is your body beach ready' ones, then that's a good thing.

That's not a support of capitalism in general though.

But I'm not very good at politics. I don't always see the bigger picture.

GunpowderGelatine · 15/01/2019 14:31

Just seen it now and I love it. Well done Gillette. Beggars belief though that some broflakes find it offensive!

FWRLurker · 15/01/2019 14:37

Reddit is freaking the F* out about this video. Literally top post on reddit this morning

“Gillette puts add out saying all of you are sexist predators”.

Then the nazis jumped in saying “all the men doing bad things were white”. Which actually wasn’t the case.

I suppose the ad could have had some men acting well earlier on to save the precious feels of the white guys.

Anyway I thought the take away was good. Men won’t stop doing this shit until other men tell them too. Do these “good men” not agree with this? If so why are they whining?

Makes me think hey actually yeah they don’t give a shit for the most part about anyone who isn’t male.

LangCleg · 15/01/2019 14:42

Although quite what it hopes to achieve

To get women, who control the vast majority of household spending, to buy Gillette razors rather than other brands!

Namechangedforthis79 · 15/01/2019 15:12

I can't think of any other company that has ever put out an advert that addresses toxic masculinity. They could have done their normal style advert and still would have made good sales out of it but they haven't, so personally I don't care if they are virtue signalling because it's important. We need more men sticking their head above the parapet say that other men are behaving inappropriately. It's all very well to say that the men you know don't do these kind of things but how many of them not only don't do it, but also stand up and challenge when they see other men doing it? This is what the advert is saying. It's not good enough to see it happening and look the other way. Men should stand up and be counted.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplands · 15/01/2019 15:14

I'm torn.
On one hand (and before seeing that screenshot posted by Oval) I love that ad and like many felt quite emotional watching it because the message is spot on and its never been said for what it is before. Any man who has a problem with the message needs to give their head a wobble.

But I'm not naive and know it's ultimately a business decision.

It's definitely a start but I wonder if their stance may change when the pile on truly happens.

How wonderful it would be to see an ad like the one Oval shared in which trans was changed to "natal women" or similar.

FWRLurker · 15/01/2019 15:19

Upon further deep dive into Twitter the reason the ad is bad is because men’s problems are actually all feminists’ fault, as feminists now have all the power, and women just as often bully and harass as men do. Oh and also even if men are more likely to harass this behavior is determined biology and is therefore good.

TY MRAs for explaining so I could get it even with my silly ladybrain getting in the way!!!

Njordsgrrrl · 15/01/2019 15:19

Titania tweets her support: (sorry not sure how to link a single Twitter post on the MN app)

"So brave to see @Gillette
calling out toxic masculinity. They’ve made a fortune over the years by pretending there are differences beween men and women. Fingers crossed this campaign is successful enough to put them out of business once and for all." 😁

LangCleg · 15/01/2019 15:20

I don't care if they are virtue signalling because it's important.

I do understand this. I also like the content of the video.

But that's also what the genderists said when Proctor and Gamble supported the removal of women's rights - as Ovahere has pointed out.

The messenger and the messenger's commitment and authenticity matters. P&G don't want to end toxic masculinity, they want to sell razors. If, say, supporting rape culture sold more razors, they'd just make a high quality video about that instead.

NotTerfNorCis · 15/01/2019 15:31

I see India Willoughby has waded in and given this board as an example of aggressive women. Shock

twitter.com/IndiaWilloughby/status/1085195189054988289?s=19

I don't think anyone here is as scary as India was in CBB.

vaginafetishist · 15/01/2019 15:37

India's such an MRA

NotTerfNorCis · 15/01/2019 15:42

MRA is precisely what I was thinking.

Funny how many transwomen are MRAs - especially when they say they know what it's like to be a woman and it's easier than being a man.

Transwomen are NOT women. Nobody treats them as women. They treat them as transwomen.

CarolDanvers · 15/01/2019 15:53

The down votes show that NAMALT is largely bullshit as it's clear from the huge amount of down votes as opposed to up votes that in fact, the majority of men are like that and they don't mind showing us that.

Njordsgrrrl · 15/01/2019 16:01

Surprised no TRA has commented on the literal violence behind Gillettes famous slogan. How dare they assume gender 🙄

AntiSocialInjusticePacifist · 15/01/2019 16:02

I’m a man and I don’t see anything particularly wrong with this ad. I think a powerful follow up would involve some teenage boy fucking up shaving and some other man noticing the after effects taking the time to buy him a decent razor and show him how.

My Dad fucked off so I recall something of an anxiety trying to figure it all out for myself at the time, and I think it’s an important reinforcement of how important father figures are for young men.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplands · 15/01/2019 16:31

India love, if you're reading this -

The majority of violence (and sexual violence) is committed by men. Towards men and women but by men.

School girls openly leered at and harassed as young as 11. THAT is what objectification looks like. And it's not women doing it.

If course it's possible to help our boys grow into men with love and affirmation. And some manage to do this without harassing, raping or physically hurting a single female.

Gosh, you really hate biological women don't you?

Purpleartichoke · 15/01/2019 16:37

I know it’s marketing, designed to get me to pick up Gillette next time I’m at the store.

I still loved it. Especially that they used images from their own past ads. They are admitting their own role in perpetuating the problems in society. I know it has to be taken with a massive grain of salt, but I’ll take it.

MarshmallowSnowDon · 15/01/2019 16:40

I predict it will ruin Gillette’s brand and sales. As people say about companies on the Internet, “get woke go broke”.

Virtue signalling and using sexist language is just going to piss off millions of people. People have far longer memories when you piss them off than when you do something they like. Wouldn’t be any more acceptable to talk about toxic feminity either.

Let’s see what their sales are like in a year from now.

ZuttZeVootEeeVro · 15/01/2019 16:41

P&G don't want to end toxic masculinity, they want to sell razors. If, say, supporting rape culture sold more razors, they'd just make a high quality video about that instead.

They would.

Also, people don't want to be lectured to by a company trying to sell something.

rytonsister · 15/01/2019 16:51

Saw this in the bbc and am wondering why so many men have take to Twitter to decry the concept!!
Ridiculous.

I thought it was thoughtful. Not a bad start as you say op.

FWRLurker · 15/01/2019 16:52

Wow IW is literally a MRA.

Somehow doubt feminist orgs are going to challenge her though. After all, TERFs are far worse than MRA.
