This popped up on my face book.

It is not going to solve all our problems but encouraging men to challenge other men’s behaviour is a good start.

Time all men were deported to an island somewhere out the way. Then set up a tinder style app to choose the ones to have weekends of free time for breeding purposes. - Klutzy Grin that's brilliant!

Time all men were deported to an island somewhere out the way. Then set up a tinder style app to choose the ones to have weekends of free time for breeding purposes.

So, all the violent, sociopathic abusers packed in with whatever worthwhile men there may be... which ones do you think will be left breathing to pop up on your app? Confused

RagingWhoreBag · 15/01/2019 11:15

Gerry - I think you've nailed it. Some of the comments on the article I saw were from women saying "NAMALT" and "it makes out like some men are ok, whereas really its most men are nice and just a small minority who aren't". We have a long way to go!

RagingWhoreBag · 15/01/2019 11:16

So, all the violent, sociopathic abusers packed in with whatever worthwhile men there may be... which ones do you think will be left breathing to pop up on your app? Oh yes, good point, lets keep them here under our noses so that they can murder us instead!

KlutzyDraconequus · 15/01/2019 11:19

NewLevelsOfTiredness

It as an off hand comment, I haven't really thought through the details, apologies.

GerryblewuptheER · 15/01/2019 11:25

Namalt

Except I'm.not sure I know anyone who hasnt been raped, assulted, groped, harassed, etc

Dd is only 12 I've already seen 2 people who have stared at her, she also reports being stared at by some bin men.

And and its not like everyone here is concentrated in one area either.

So, how the fuck do you explain it all if it's somehow the minority doing this Hmm

Yeah it doesn't add up does it.

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 15/01/2019 11:26

That’s really heartening, although the backlash is inevitable and depressing

flameycakes · 15/01/2019 11:26

Piers Morgan basically advertising a product on morning tv again, wonder if he shares the same PR firm as he does with Greggs x

OvaHere · 15/01/2019 11:28

Am I the only one who has a bit of an issue with this?

Not the sentiments expressed which I do largely agree with - we all know women get talked over and catcalled and that boys being boys is a handy cover up for some awful behaviour. Of course men can and should do better around these issues.

However, companies that exist to sell products and make money from people getting involved in what is arguably a type of politicking doesn't sit well with me anymore.

How many times in the last year or two have we got mad because one business or another inserted themselves into the arena of trans vs feminist politics? We were all furious with Ocado, Dove and Lush amongst others.

I might like this particular advert because it happens to align with things I believe in but should P&G (parent company of Gillette) decide to make a Tampax ad featuring transwomen or one reminding us that men have periods too so be kinder and more inclusive then I'll be really fucking annoyed. (P&G I think were one of the sponsors of the Stonewall Trans ad that went into the Metro)

Apologies if this comes across as a bit contrary but I find it hard to celebrate big business trying to be social and moral arbiters these days.

headinhands · 15/01/2019 11:32

It's advertising! Simple. Women still do the shopping so they're appealing to them, because they want their money.

If men did the shopping the ads for anything would sound like a car ad. It'd be all about being in control and powerful yadadadada

flameycakes · 15/01/2019 11:33

@ovahere I'm just an old cynic that believes a lot of this stuff is done to manipulate sales x

OvaHere · 15/01/2019 11:37

Oh I'm sure that's a big part of it too flameycakes

Datun · 15/01/2019 11:40

I liked it. Of course it will get a lot of down votes. It wouldn't be necessary otherwise.

And yes to men not bothering to boycott, despite what they say.

I'm very sensitive to manipulation, so I understand that adverts do that. Nonetheless, I liked it. And the premise it upholds is genuine.

FloralBunting · 15/01/2019 11:48

I'm being a contrarian grumpy pants about it. Oh look, big money corporate makes a splash with an advert that garners even more publicity by making headlines, and beardy-bros who probably haven't brought a razor in a while and caused a dip in sales, now get the good feels about the brand and think that buying that particular razor means that somehow the lot of women is improved.

Yeah.

Right.

NewLevelsOfTiredness · 15/01/2019 12:13

@KlutzyDraconequus

It was a grumpy and snarky reply from me in the first place, sorry.

Datun · 15/01/2019 12:32

big money corporate makes a splash with an advert that garners even more publicity

Oh I agree. I'm sure they're not doing it from an altruistic point of view.

But the premise, that men can, and should, help, is now out there, albeit in an advert.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 15/01/2019 12:54

TBH I don't think it really matters what the motive is in a way. The constant drip drip of things like adverts is what normalised certain things. An advert drip dripping that "good" males don't behave like assholes,.and that men should pull other men up on assholery can only be a good thing.

CalmDownPacino · 15/01/2019 13:06

I love it and have posted the same on the AIBU thread.

On what possible grounds could men complain about this?

ScipioAfricanus · 15/01/2019 13:13

Agree that it is done to generate publicity and sales, safe innthe kniwlesge that women are the main household shoppers and the advert will appeal to them even if a few poor little MRAs have to find another brand to go crying to.

However, anything that changes the tone of male product adverts from objectifying women (or making them mindless invisible drones) is a good thing. I’d love this to be the kind of advert my son sees growing up, rather than the bloody Flake woman and Nicole/Papa ads I remember from when I was a child.

ScipioAfricanus · 15/01/2019 13:14

Ugh bad typos - safe in the knowledge

FloralBunting · 15/01/2019 13:19

Yeah, I can see the idea behind the drip of positive messages, and I applaud the optimism of seeing it that way.

I don't know, I'm just in a real funk today seeing horrible stories of the things men do to women, and this piece of fluff is making headlines because Piers fucking Morgan is stirring shit.

It's like treating women well as a baseline is on a level with Greggs sausage rolls and that fucks me off.

theresaspiderinthesink · 15/01/2019 13:21

Fuck I'm in tears. I'm very surprised.

I have two boys.

This is what is needed.

Datun · 15/01/2019 13:25

It seems to have affected a lot of people very emotionally. The thread on AIBU is the same.

And Floral's right. Everyone has been drip fed sexism in advertising since it began.

Anything that reverses that has to be good.

ForgivenessIsDivine · 15/01/2019 13:28

I cried and cried and cried at this. There is so much collective trapped emotion and hurt behind topics raised in this advert. It was cathartic to watch and I hope people everywhere take note.

AtrociousCircumstance · 15/01/2019 13:29

I know that it’s a marketing ploy. But I’m still in tears.

There’s never been an advert like this before.
