Was in the car and heard Jane Garvey say they were going to be discussing this today, with a firefighter who transitioned m to f and the effect on their marriage. Just got home and waiting for the discussion to start.

Coming up now!

I am listening.. God she sounds so selfish and self pitying about his wife asking him to leave. No sympathy for his/her poor children and the impact on them... Its all me me poor me

AbsintheFriends · 07/01/2019 10:36

So far, 5 minutes of Rebecca Root reading from 'Stephanie's' autobiography about how painful it was for them when their wife asked them to leave the family home.

And counting. Still waiting for discussion.

Agree redjellybean. My attention is wandering, but all I'm hearing is 'emotions' 'pain' 'tears' blah blah blah

Is quite dull so far, just reading out a bit of their book rather than a conversation interrogating the issue

Datun · 07/01/2019 10:38

Struggling to listen. The self obsession is off putting.

Melroses · 07/01/2019 10:38

You got there first! Listening too - not hearing much about the marriage there.

theredjellybean · 07/01/2019 10:39

Oh god now we have "scars that will never heal"

Love to know if his her children have healed from this...

Melroses · 07/01/2019 10:39

To be honest, it is not much different to the way men think when they must end the marriage because they have had some chemical reaction with someone else that they must follow up.

Whatsnewwithyou · 07/01/2019 10:39

Me, me, me. Yawn.

R0wantrees · 07/01/2019 10:40

So far a very lengthy extract from the firefighter is being read out by Rebecca Root.
It is very unusual on Woman's Hour for such a long passage to be read out.

Rebecca Root is an actor & trans rights activist who featured on the Victoria Derbyshire show last year when self-id was first raised:

Interesting format that WH has chosen to go with though. If they're just going to read this drivel out why not just make it book of the week? I'm hoping the fact that they haven't means that some critical analysis may follow.

But sheesh, it's been 10 minutes of reading. That's a LOT of airtime. it seems longer

Are they going to do a companion piece from trans widows, I wonder?

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 07/01/2019 10:43

The other side on tomorrow's programme

MsMcWoodle · 07/01/2019 10:44

OMG - they actually are! On tomorrow.

bakingdemon · 07/01/2019 10:44

The selfishness and solipsism of thinking that his wife and children would be happy to go along with such a fundamental shift in one of their most important relationships. If you marry a man, you have a reasonable expectation that they should continue to be a man....

Datun · 07/01/2019 10:44

I mean, I know I'm fairly immune to the endless narcissism, but really, this is soporifically dull. The wan, sad, weary reading voice isn't helping.

AornisHades · 07/01/2019 10:45

Did I miss the discussion element? Hmm

theredjellybean · 07/01/2019 10:45

Ooh just heard tomorrow's guest, a wife on other side, already pleased to hear her say that it is a traumatic life event for her and children and they are being silenced.
Its going to be very interesting listening

Raglansleeve · 07/01/2019 10:46

Actually, I think it was quite a good way to show the writer up as self absorbed, selfish and quite frankly, boring.

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 07/01/2019 10:46

I'm wondering if Stephanie wasn't up for discussion- will be interesting to see if tomorrow's piece takes the same approach or is more like an interview.

R0wantrees · 07/01/2019 10:47

This segment is in stark contrast to the one that preceeded it. A woman diagnosed with breast cancer who needed to have one of her breasts removed talking about why it is important to her not to wear a prosthesis and reject the pressures to do so.
It was a very important discussion, cut short.

HollowTalk · 07/01/2019 10:49

That person was a complete narcissist. Their family only existed in relation to them. It made me think of the murder/suicide in Cavan and what was said about the father then.

Melroses · 07/01/2019 10:50

Yes - I hope they cover that a bit more at a later date. It was a good discussion and made me think.
