And he did it with the most derogatory angry expression on his face.

“Also it's great to see (on a feminist board) women clamouring to join in and call Theresa May stupid. Way to miss the fucking point”

Being a feminist doesn’t mean that you have to be supportive of all women whatever they do.

OyWithThePoodles · 19/12/2018 14:54

Why ARE you bothering OP? Obviously if you come on a forum and express an opinion people will have different opinions. So if you didn't want to hear those opinions, why DID you bother? This sort of response to disagreement from posters genuinely baffles me.

FWIW I'm cool with what he said - if that is what he said. Where's the lie?

PreseaCombatir · 19/12/2018 14:56

As with antisemitism, Corbyn forces his loyal supporters to take up immoral positions. Today, people who consider themselves feminists will argue that it's not sexist to call May a "stupid woman"
This tweet says it a nutshell for me

MattFreisCheekyDimples · 19/12/2018 14:56

I'm a Corbyn supporter, though less so in recent months, I'll admit, but there's no question what he said was massively inappropriate in the House. I think he did say 'stupid woman' and if so, I would have more respect if he admitted it and apologised. Having rewatched the video, I think it's just conceivable he said 'people', which is still inappropriate imo, but 'woman' would be worse, laden as it is with longstanding misogynistic connotations. What Andrew Neil has to be outraged about I do not know, though.

Bejazzled · 19/12/2018 14:56

she doesn't do the female sex any favours either

She's the second female prime minister of GB. I think that in of itself is a good thing.

If he had said 'ridiculous answer' 'stupid comments' instead of calling her a "stupid woman" nothing would have been said. He let his mask slip....and oh Jeremy Corbyn....we see you

Bertrand I do not support May myself but people are deliberately missing the point if they think that he said this because he thinks that she is stupid. He was not being factual, he said it as a sexist put down and this is the point I am making.

DioVelazquez · 19/12/2018 15:00

How about none. He knows the camera is on him. He didn't have to say anything at all. He chose to.

Firstly, I think the camera being on him should be irrelevant tbf.

Secondly, while I agree with you that the so-called leaders of the country shouldn't be called each other stupid anythings, that's not really the point that's being debated here, which is that he shouldn't have called her woman specifically because it's misogynist.

CriticalCondition · 19/12/2018 15:00

Being a feminist doesn’t mean that you have to be supportive of all women whatever they do.

Agreed, that's right. But doesn't it mean that you should call out or at least be able to recognise sexist behaviour when you see it?

Bejazzled · 19/12/2018 15:00

I might have missed it, but where did anyone say AN was "outraged" What Andrew Neil has to be outraged about I do not know, though

Upthread I said I thought he and Laura Kuensberg were 'gobsmacked' that's an entirely different thing. I was trying to explain how they looked at JC making the comment - not at the comment itself.

Bejazzled exactly.

Yes of course, a woman in the most powerful position in the UK isn't a role model for girls to aspire to.

OlennasWimple · 19/12/2018 15:02

Even saying "stupid idiot" would be enough to earn a censure for unparliamentary language. They don't talk directly to each other (everything is technically directed through the Speaker), and although they often go close to the line, MPs steer clear of personal insults

It's a bit like MNHQ moderation policy: someone can say "Olenna is being a twat", but if someone says "Olenna - you area twat" it will be deleted as a personal attack

Jaffacakebeast · 19/12/2018 15:03

She is a stupid woman though :/ if a bloke was a twat to me and I called him a stupid man?? What’s the problem

MargueritaPink · 19/12/2018 15:08

Theresa May is not stupid. You are perfectly entitled to disagree with her politics and policy but calling her "stupid" is just a lazy insult.

she doesn't do the female sex any favours either what is that supposed to mean?

daisychicken · 19/12/2018 15:10

I lipread (profoundly deaf) and he said 'stupid woman', his lip pattern was very clear and the word 'woman' could not be mistaken for 'people'.

It doesn't matter it was in relation to, he shouldn't have said that. Why not say 'how ridiculous' or such instead?!

HelenaDove · 19/12/2018 15:12

This tweet sums it up for me.

For anyone who is about to lambast #Corbyn for allegedly mouthing “stupid woman” about May at #pmqs, let’s have a bit of perspective: the Tories reinstated the whip so two misogynist sex pests could vote in the Tory no confidence vote. The tories are a party of sexists + bigots

AdamNichol · 19/12/2018 15:14

be grateful that he didn't say 'stupid bitch'

I'm not sure that'd be worse. Someone can you (borderline) profanity in the heat of the moment without it really showing much of their beneath-the-surface nature. I've been called a bastard a few times, I don't think the author of that view really considered me to be a child born out of wedlock and damned in the eyes of god and men (nor the extended patriarchal view of unmarried mothers) - they just picked a swear word.
The 'stupid woman' shows a far more ingrained and insidious viewpoint.

starcrossedseahorse · 19/12/2018 15:14

God I really, really have grown to detest the word 'bigot'. Talk about lazy insults...Confused

DioVelazquez · 19/12/2018 15:15

The 'stupid woman' shows a far more ingrained and insidious viewpoint

Does it though? I've muttered "stupid woman" under my breath as much as I've muttered "stupid man". (both usually when driving). I don't think I'm a misogynist though.

Or maybe I am??

MattFreisCheekyDimples · 19/12/2018 15:15

Upthread I said I thought he and Laura Kuensberg were 'gobsmacked' that's an entirely different thing.

You're right - I didn't see the Andrew Neil clip, so I was going on your description of it, and interpreted 'gobsmacked' as something akin to 'outraged'. Not a million miles away, I wouldn't have thought, and you don't need to be so prickly really.

CriticalCondition · 19/12/2018 15:16

Condemnation of Corbyn's use of sexist put down =/= approval of May, her policies or her party.

It's really not hard to separate the two.

SillySallySingsSongs · 19/12/2018 15:18

The tories are a party of sexists + bigots

Whilst labour are all wonderful with no issues at all? How many members, councillors etc have now been suspended for anti semitism? No Labour MPs have ever been suspended for inappropriate behaviour?

Pathetic political point scoring is just that. Pathetic. If you are going to make a statement like that then you best make sure all of your own house is in order first.

starcrossedseahorse · 19/12/2018 15:19

This is the extent of critical thinking today though isn't it? Criticise one side and you must fully support the other. Ridiculous.

Horsewithnomane · 19/12/2018 15:19

Sorry if this has already been mentioned but didn't Labour accuse PM Cameron of sexism when he told a woman MP "calm down, dear" quoting that stupid advert? At the time I thought it would've been quite witty if he'd said it to one of the blokes, but as he chose to say it to a woman I was appalled. Mr Cameron was a sexist then as is Mr Corbyn today.

Some men, eh? They haven't a bloody clue. These two probably have the nowse (sp?) to not say anything too ridiculous in public that is racist or homophobic yet when it comes to casual sexism they are pathetic.

It also reminds me of Capt. Mainwaring saying 'stupid boy'...

Perhaps they are stupid boys. I wonder how they'd like to be called that? (I'm quite angry about this - one expects better from this shower.)

Usernumbers1234 · 19/12/2018 15:21

@helenadove

That’s such a red herring and partisan political pointscoring.

They are suspended pending an investigation (I suspect that investigation won’t play out well for them,but....) they are yet to be found guilty.

That was an internal party vote, not commons vote, that based on the rules of a confidence vote they remained eligible for and therefore could not be prevented from voting.

Saying they were allowed in because May needed their votes is both not true and nonsensical, and has nothing whatsoever to do with what corbyn said.

I think stupid woman has connotations that stupid man doesn’t have, but I can accept why some might even agree with what he said. But it’s not that I take issue with, it’s that he’s 1) stupid enough to mouth it on live tv knowing the consequences 2) ignorant and arrogant enough to then lie about it.
