And he did it with the most derogatory angry expression on his face.

It didn't just take off as a story on Twitter or whatever. At the time it happened, people in the House were calling it out and asking Bercow to make JC apologise.

If it looked like "stupid woman" to the people who were right there at the time AND it looks like "stupid women" to most of us who watched the clip afterwards, surely the balance of probabilities is that he did indeed say "stupid woman"?

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 19/12/2018 14:33

They are like two kids in primary school. Theresa said something goady. Jeremy responded by mouthing something equally childish because the remark got under his skin. If I were the teacher in charge of their class I'd be reminding them both that they had work to do and they'd better crack on and get finished before the bell rings.

starcrossedseahorse · 19/12/2018 14:34

Stupid woman is loaded with a patriarchal sense of a woman demonstrating the ineptitude of women when trying to achieve parity with men. It's less you stupid individual woman and more you stupid representation of your lesser sex [Please note, I'm trying to articulate a patriarchal view, not my own!!!!]. To call someone a stupid woman is akin to considering the successful black person to be an uppity nger - it's fuelled by a whole history of oppression

Yes.

bigKiteFlying · 19/12/2018 14:35

And the irony of Andrew Neil acting shocked given what he has tweeted about Carole Cadwalladr - none that was misogynistic

Doesn't surprise me - I'm also aware that a Tory MP called labour woman MP stupid woman and that hit headline few years ago.

I still think this is telling behaviour from Corbyn and in last election I voted Labour.

DioVelazquez · 19/12/2018 14:35

surely the balance of probabilities is that he did indeed say "stupid woman?

It's certainly possible. I'm another who doesn't see the big deal with that though. I've called people stupid men and women under my breath before. I still don't know what better, less offensive word someone is supposed to use as a noun when calling her (or any woman) stupid. If you insist on calling people stupid, that is.

Usernumbers1234 · 19/12/2018 14:36

@olennaswimple

It absolutely did. People watch PMQs and live tweet every single week.

There is a pack of press in the room, logged onto Twitter, typing.

Just go on there and timeline it.

Within seconds of him mouthing it - they all have monitors in front of them, they were tweeting about it and the press raised it to the MPs. If you think that MP spotted it from across the chamber and brought it up you are being totally naive. The thousands of people watching him on TV saw it.

derxa · 19/12/2018 14:37

Where did the report of this come from initially? That would be more interesting than anything else. I watched it live with my very own eyes.
I'm a qualified SALT and his lip movements were consistent with 'stupid woman'.

Bejazzled · 19/12/2018 14:37

So to paraphrase what some people on this Feminism Board are actually saying is; 'it's okay to call a middle aged female at work "a stupid woman" as long as she is a Tory'

It's never ok

Well judging by the opinion of many on here I suppose we should all just shut up and be grateful that he didn't say 'stupid bitch' or 'stupid cow'.

But I guess they would find a way to explain that away too.

DioVelazquez · 19/12/2018 14:39

Well judging by the opinion of many on here I suppose we should all just shut up and be grateful that he didn't say 'stupid bitch' or 'stupid cow

Well that does seem worse, doesn't it? So what word should he have used?

TheWifeofRequirement · 19/12/2018 14:41

bejazzled I haven’t read a single comment that you could logically extrude to be condoning calling a woman a stupid woman at work. Not a single one.

What I have seen is a lot of people condemning his use of language bit aknowledging that it was clumsy rather than malicious, and indeed said to no one but himself.

Usernumbers1234 · 19/12/2018 14:41

Dela - for a man who prides himself on “kinder politics” he didn’t need to say stupid anything, not like he hasn’t got a dismissive sneer and a head shake in his repertoire

CriticalCondition · 19/12/2018 14:43

To my mind, stupid man is a personal insult. Stupid woman is loaded with a patriarchal sense of a woman demonstrating the ineptitude of women when trying to achieve parity with men. It's less you stupid individual woman and more you stupid representation of your lesser sex

This ^^

It's not just semantics. Whatever your politics or views on Brexit, it's a cheap sexist put-down. Why does supporting Labour or Tory, Leave or Remain, Corbyn or May determine whether that is acceptable or not?

How can sexism be acceptable?

Usernumbers1234 · 19/12/2018 14:43

Thewife of

“Sorry but if he didn’t call her a “stupid woman” he should have done.”

Pretty sure that’s condoning it, maybe you should reread the thread.

starcrossedseahorse · 19/12/2018 14:44

He is the leader of the opposition. He knows that PMQs is scrutinised in a very particular way. He could have just said nothing. Criticise her policies not her and certainly not in this old fashioned and openly sexist way.

He has told us who he is. Again.

Also he has now managed to deflect from Brexit which was perhaps his plan all along as he has absolutely nothing to say about it at all.

starcrossedseahorse · 19/12/2018 14:45

He also has form for being revolting to women journos. Surprise, surprise.

SillySallySingsSongs · 19/12/2018 14:47

Well that does seem worse, doesn't it? So what word should he have used?

How about none. He knows the camera is on him. He didn't have to say anything at all. He chose to.

Lottapianos · 19/12/2018 14:48

'Also he has now managed to deflect from Brexit which was perhaps his plan all along '

I really don't think he's that smart and / or organised

onefootinthegrave · 19/12/2018 14:48

Also it's great to see (on a feminist board) women clamouring to join in and call Theresa May stupid. Way to miss the fucking point

I haven't missed the point, but I think you have!

There are number of things TM is, and stupid is one of them.

FatherBuzzCagney · 19/12/2018 14:49

The country is being shafted and people are talking about this????

Even if you think that casual misogyny is fine (and if you do then this might not be the board for you) then the sheer fucking stupidity of it should surely make you angry. We have the worst government this country has ever had since we stopped letting monarchs make the decisions, sending us through utter fucking incompetence and desperation to cling onto power into the greatest threat to our security since WW2 (and the greatest self-inflicted threat since...when? the Civil War?). It's led by a Prime Minister who is not only deeply personally incompetent but, it now turns out, thinks she can shred our parliamentary democratic norms and run things like the world's least charismatic, most emotionally constipated authoritarian ruler, who last week was so fucking stupid that she thought she could, in the full glare of publicity, simultaneously convince parliament that the EU would come round and the EU that parliament would come round (top tip Theresa: when you say things in public, everyone can hear you).

And what does Jeremy fucking Corbyn do? He hands May and her freakshow of a party the moral highground. Okay, we all know he's not the brightest and seems never to have grown out of the public school 6th form debating society's token socialist mentality which tells you that not only are you always right but also always virtuous (see also: Seamus Milne, the People's Front of Judea's Steve Bannon), but even he should know you don't let yourself get caught like that on camera when for once you actually, finally, have the upper hand.

Still, maybe I'm being unfair expecting him to know that you can't behave like that in the HoC and get away with it - after all, he's only had 35 years working there so he's probably still getting his head round it.

Don't even get me started on the Liberal fucking Democrats

DeepanKrispanEven · 19/12/2018 14:49

He should have just said something like "Stupid idiot" because what she was saying richly merited it. It was really embarrassing how she kept chuntering on about Christmas to try to avoid talking about anything complicated. Unfortunately when she behaves like that she doesn't do the female sex any favours either.

starcrossedseahorse · 19/12/2018 14:50

Thanks for proving my point so well.

starcrossedseahorse · 19/12/2018 14:50

That post was to onefoot

PreseaCombatir · 19/12/2018 14:51

Not even remotely the same thing. For a start, ‘woman’ is not a derogatory term like ‘bitch’ or ‘bastard’. To infer that it is is MASSIVELY offensive
Good thing I was quite clearly equating woman with Muslim and black then, isn’t it

Usernumbers1234 · 19/12/2018 14:52

twitter.com/theredroar/status/1075368128551489538?s=21

Pretty sure that’s the smoking gun.

Misogynist and Liar.
