And he did it with the most derogatory angry expression on his face.

Studies show that even experienced lip readers aren't more than 40% accurate, particularly with sounds like p, w and m which all involve putting the lips together.

Mind you, it's hilarious that this has got the Mail getting all worked up about the use of "stupid woman". It's not as if they've ever shown a jot of concern about the misogynistic and racist abuse regularly directed at Diane Abbott.

Lottapianos · 20/12/2018 07:01

'He shouldn’t have said whatever he said -but even people in his position are entitled to an moment of exasperation, surely?'

I agree Bertrand. I think he's a complete disaster and a total misogynist and it was very unprofessional of him to mutter this on camera in the Commons. And what a stupid, cowardly decision to lie about if when challenged!

She is a stupid, reckless woman though and I don't blame him for being fuming with her.

MaisyPops · 20/12/2018 07:10

Very well said BertrandRussell

merrymouse · 20/12/2018 07:28

Agree with Bertrand.

Plenty of other things to criticise him for. A load of pots and kettles fiddling while Rome burns.

BertrandRussell · 20/12/2018 07:34

Oh, and skilled lip readers always say that there are many sounds and words it is very difficult to distinguish and they have to rely on context. So I am amazed at the number of people who are 100% sure he said one thing or the other. Maybe they should share their secrets with the RNID?

Aristaeus76 · 20/12/2018 07:56

I wonder if this is a bit like that dress that people perceived as different colours? What I saw was clearly people. I was actually shocked at how apparent it was, because I was expecting it to be quite ambiguous.

ratchethandler · 20/12/2018 08:11

It's neither word particularly. The main issue is it's very unparliamentary and ungentlemanly language, entirely unbecoming of someone seeking a mandate to be the next PM.

Members are kicked out of the commons for the rest of the day and/or made to apologise for using the word 'hypocrisy'. Whether he said "people" or "woman", [I believe it was woman] he should have said afterwards: "I used inappropriate language, I'm sorry", and that would most likely have been that. But our Jeremy doesn't do things the easy, sensible way. He likes to lie, to deceive, to deny and to allow things to get drawn out, so his devotees can claim yet again that there's a Blairite/Tory-Led/Zionist conspiracy at work against him.

I wonder what the numerous feminists in Labour would say if a Tory, particularly one who is pro Brexit, referred to one of them in the same way?

Jeremy Corbyn [who's as thick as two short planks] calling someone 'stupid', is particularly offensive IMO..

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 20/12/2018 08:16

I think Corbyn’s a disaster for the Labour Party, and I just can’t see the outrage about this

The outrage is over the cover up.
The incident might be trivial, if he's said it, even though I would disagree that using misogynistic insults ever can be trivial, but it's a cover up that elevates it to a completely lever.

A moment of exasperation is understandable, getting carried away in the heat of the moment is understandable, covering it up is a different beast altogether.
You say something in the heat of the moment, you apologise, you don't cover up.

Sarcelle · 20/12/2018 08:27

I only saw the footage this morning when it was on Breakfast tv. They played the clip on a loop so in the interests of being fair I watched the clip repeatedly with an open mind. He definitely said stupid woman.

Leaving aside the disappointment that the leader of the opposition, his face contorted with sneery anger said that, the fact he is lying to cover up is the most upsetting and disgusting thing to me.

The way the so called leaders of the house bray and catcall at each other is disgraceful, embarrassing and distracting. Calling anybody stupid anything is disgusting.

I could never vote for Labour while Corbin and his cronies are in place. Massive own goal from him.

ratchethandler · 20/12/2018 08:28

Excactly..

Spitting that out at May because she got under his skin is even further proof of his incompetency.

Sarcelle · 20/12/2018 08:30

Corbyn - spelling.

Just read a few posts down about it being trivial. The cover up is not a trivial matter, far from it. He should have just apologised.

mirialis · 20/12/2018 08:37

Sarcelle - you cannot say that "he definitely said woman" because plenty of others (who are no fans of Labour let alone Corbyn) see it as "people". Therefore there is no issue here - doesn't matter if he said stupid woman in any case, and no cover up because he might well have said "people" and only he knows.... and I doubt he even knows because it was a muttered comment to himself.

YepImafraidIchangeditagain · 20/12/2018 08:49

He called her stupid because that's what he believes her to be, he called her a woman because she is one.
I don't understand how that has become a feminism argument? If he called her a 'stupid ciswoman', I could understand some outrage.
I know.....it's because he put stupid alongside woman and we must all believe that women can never be stupid- although MN is flooded with women slating the PM. That's ok though?
Parliament is full of childish insult slinging and one- upping, I'm sure somebody has said Stupid man before and we haven't heard about it.
I don't think it's a 'sex' issue.

YepImafraidIchangeditagain · 20/12/2018 08:50

For the record, I think JC is a stupid man. Wink

DeloresJaneUmbridge · 20/12/2018 08:56

It's not a feminist argument.

Personally I am more amazed that the Conservative party has suddenly realised they are feminists all the while treating women appallingly. That's the REAL feminist issue here and not what Corby did or did not say. For the record even lip readers appear to be arguing about it.

But it's a good distraction technique to get you all riled up while ignoring the real issues.

And some of you are so stupid you've fallen for it. And that's why we have this government.

ratchethandler · 20/12/2018 09:09

you are so stupid you've fallen for it.

Well done, people always respond well to being called 'stupid' and told what they should and shouldn't be talking about, by Corbynites...

I wonder if that could be the reason "why we have this government"?

BertrandRussell · 20/12/2018 09:19

“You say something in the heat of the moment, you apologise, you don't cover up.”

If everyone apologised for every rude thing said in the House if Commons, there’d be even less time for debate on the real issues. Nobody knows what he actually said. So nobody knows whether he covered anything up. Utterly trivial. But an effective smokescreen.

ratchethandler · 20/12/2018 09:26

He's the leader of the opposition and people have been forced to apologise for less. If Corbyn was not such a dishonest coward, he'd have just stood up, apologised and no more "smokescreen".

Plus I'm sure you'd be saying that if Boris or Nigel Farage had said that after being got at by a Labour female MP...?

Greensleeves · 20/12/2018 09:27

ratchethammer, Philip Hammond said it to Labour MP Andrea Jenkyns, a few months ago. Audibly and on camera, in the HoC. Where was the furore?

Greensleeves · 20/12/2018 09:28

as in, he called her a "stupid woman".

hackmum · 20/12/2018 09:32

Jeremy Corbyn [who's as thick as two short planks] calling someone 'stupid', is particularly offensive IMO.

See, things I find offensive include a prime minister who, as home secretary, stopped funding rescue boats in the Mediterranean for desperate immigrants, allowing them to drown. Also putting in place hostile anti-immigration measures that meant that people who had been in this country for 50 years found themselves unable to access healthcare or were wrongly deported to countries they hadn't lived in for half a century.

Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

niesha6899 · 20/12/2018 09:35

well we all saw on the news that he said stupid woman but he denies it so who are we to point out his flaws

ratchethandler · 20/12/2018 09:36

Greensleeves. Despite the whataboutery of that post. A quick Google search will show you there was indeed 'a furore'. Both Hammond and Berkow have form in this area...

ratchethandler · 20/12/2018 09:45

a prime minister who, as home secretary, stopped funding rescue boats in the Mediterranean blah blah ....

Oh Lordy here we go...

I prefer to stick to what happened in PMQ's yesterday..
