And he did it with the most derogatory angry expression on his face.

Yes the backbenches point is a very good one.

FatherBuzzCagney · 19/12/2018 18:43

Yes, I'm sure that's it, but you would think that three years on the front bench might have made a bit of a difference. I suppose, though, that if you have an army of true believers justifying your every fuckup as the actions of a secular saint and a leader of genius then it doesn't really encourage you to learn to behave differently.

ratchethandler · 19/12/2018 19:01

DeepanKrispanEven Well surmised. If we had a competent opposition, May would have been toast a year ago.

Anda proper conservative would have made mincemeat out of Corbyn years ago...

mirialis · 19/12/2018 19:04

Who cares whether this is as a result of his time on the backbenchers or whatever... he referred to her as a stupid woman FGS. Not a bitch or a witch or a hag or harpy... a stupid woman. I cannot believe anyone is making a fuss over it and of course TM is playing it now (she would be stupid not to after all) but it really grates that she is doing so because actually she HAS done a lot to encourage women to get into politics and there is no way she would have been encouraging them to let their politics get sidetracked by this sort of bs that puts women on the weaker foot.

brizzledrizzle · 19/12/2018 19:14

No, you really cannot divorce the person from their ideologies and actions in that way*

Try it, it's remarkably easy. In plenty of jobs it's essential. Police, social workers, teachers, doctors, nurses - etc etc.

Freespeecher · 19/12/2018 19:15

Politics 101: never hand your opponent a stick with which to beat you.

OhDearGodLookAtThisMess · 19/12/2018 19:30

I don't give a shit whether he said 'woman' or 'people.'

Except that he quite categorically, without any shadow of a doubt, said 'woman.' No debate about it. The video footage is there and plain for all to see.

The worst thing about it is that JEREMY CORBYN HAS BLATANTLY LIED ABOUT IT!! Bleating on about "yeah but, no but, what about..." is irrelevant. Any other incidents can or should have been dealt with on their own account. He has lied to Parliament. I'm not surprised in the least, because the man is a complete weasel (yes, along with others from all parties), but please don't defend him on this. I'd possibly even find a bit of respect for him if he just came out and 'fessed up to it.

GiantKitten · 19/12/2018 19:33

Deaf lip reader says it was definitely “people”

mobile.twitter.com/deaf/status/1075396470352867328?s=21&fbclid=IwAR1kIzenocvrAvnTTS6aEG8N7UBt9GWryrFbXNkjKougmvybRplbO9eLvMs

But in any case - does she really deserve to be defended, after all her govt (& she) has done, just because she’s female? Really?

I’m not a Corbyn fan, but she literally disgusts me Angry

starcrossedseahorse · 19/12/2018 19:34

Yes the lying is dreadful.

ratchethandler · 19/12/2018 19:37

All he had to say was: 'I'm sorry, I was wrong'.

The incident, though not hugely important in itself, shows Corbyn's stupidity as he knows all eyes are on him and the cameras are rolling. . The man is a first rate idiot....

BertrandRussell · 19/12/2018 19:38

Amazing how many skilled lip readers they are who are able to be so sure. For most lip readers there is always an element of doubt- maybe the mumsnet experts could share their skills?

MaisyPops · 19/12/2018 19:40

Whilst TM is whooping and making a show of herself panto-style like everything is one big joke, the community I live in is making more charitable donations than ever before because it's not pleasant to watch people slowly dying, stripped of all dignity.
'Stupid woman' does not even cover what I think of that woman.
I agree.
She is a stupid woman. Stupid and arrogant for her actions.

SeaWitchly · 19/12/2018 19:41

I don't see this as misogyny Confused
It does not particularly bother me if he said 'stupid woman' or 'stupid man' tbh. Would people be up in arms if he had called Boris Johnson 'stupid man'?
I think we do feminism a disservice if we get all pearl clutchy about stuff like this when there actual examples of misogyny that need calling out [Dr Haddock and transgender ideology for one] and bigger fish to fry..

ratchethandler · 19/12/2018 19:42

Apparently Dame Evelyn Elizabeth Ann Glennie, born deaf said Corbyn definitely said woman. So not all lip readers agree.

Aristaeus76 · 19/12/2018 19:43

Ok. I've just watched the incident for the first time. He clearly said people. It's not even remotely unambiguous. Unless there is another clip from a different angle that I haven't seen, I can't see how this is even up for debate.

SeaWitchly · 19/12/2018 19:44

Agree with this ^

starcrossedseahorse · 19/12/2018 19:45

Stand back, for once I am an expert in something! I am deaf and I AM a lipreader and have been consulting with my community of lip-readers over on FB, we've probably got several centuries of expertise behind us in this matter. All but one are 100% it was 'woman' and they can explain exactly why but I don't want to copy someone's comments on to here without them knowing. There was one person who didn't think it was woman, she said (to paraphrase) that Labour would be the saviours of the deaf community and anyone with eyes in their head could tell he didn't say stupid. So that clears that up

Bertrand this was posted by MrSlant earlier.

Aristaeus76 · 19/12/2018 19:45

I was actually taken aback as I was expecting the clip to be ambiguous, but to my eyes, it was undoubtedly people.

PrettyLovely · 19/12/2018 19:51

I cannot see at all how anyone would get woman from that clip its clearly people.
Even so she is stupid and she is a woman so if he ever did say that about her I would be inclined to agree.

MaisyPops · 19/12/2018 19:51

I agree.

Someone shared something on social media saying 'things feminists care about...' and a list of issues. Followed by 'things feminists do not care about': trying to rename father Christmas 'person christmas'

SeaWitchly · 19/12/2018 19:52

I have just reviewed the footage and I think he actually said 'people'... and muttered it under his breath to no-one in particular.
But to be honest I still don't care whether he actually muttered 'stupid people' or 'stupid woman'. FFS I might manage to be outraged if he had bellowed at TM or called her a witch or hag or some other misogynist term. But as it stands it is a storm in a teacup whipped up by the media and a failing Conservative government.

OhDearGodLookAtThisMess · 19/12/2018 19:54

Well, Aristaeus, are you sure you're not watching a different clip?
I'm no lip-reader, but he didn't close his mouth for the first syllable of the second word, as he would have had to have done to make the "p" sound. His lips go forward slightly, to make the "w" sound.

OhDearGodLookAtThisMess · 19/12/2018 19:57

But as it stands it is a storm in a teacup whipped up by the media and a failing Conservative government.

No it's not. That's what desperate Labour supporters always say when Corbyn lets his true character show. As I've said, I don't care if he called TM a stupid woman or whatever. I do care that he subsequently lied in a lame attempt to save his .... was going to say reputation, but that's kind of shot anyway.

ratchethandler · 19/12/2018 19:59

Is that like his 'I didn't support the IRA' storm in a teacup?

AspieAndProud · 19/12/2018 20:00

‘Woman’ begins with open, rounded lips. ‘People’ begins with pursed lips.

I think it’s ironic that a misogynist should be caught out by a labial consonant.
