Bunbury’s Public Service Announcement 2

The useful Bunbury Guide to Spotting Community Disruptors is constantly evolving.

The best research and advice is not to engage with community disruptors and trolls. As ever, if you suspect troll activity, report it to MNHQ.

This is a continuation of the first Public Service Announcement thread:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3321127-public-service-announcement

If and when you see threads plopped into FWR, especially a curious repeat of well worn topics, maybe check for poster history before engaging.

There are a number of posts/posters/threads that are reproduced on Twitter or Facebook to foment controversy using screen shots & flagging to either MNHQ to have threads or posters deleted. Sometimes, it’s used to approach commissioning editors with ideas for articles. It’s a tiresome tactic that we’ve had several community disruptor posters who themselves post the comments that they then highlight elsewhere as purported evidence of racism, religious intolerance, anti-men sentiments, or transphobia.

Some helpful links in following posts.

Keep forgetting to look

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 14/07/2019 21:22

reddit makes my head hurt. i did try to go on the MN trolls bit there, but i just couldn't get my head around it

NeurotrashWarrior · 14/07/2019 22:10

Oh the mn trolls was like an alternative universe of mn running concurrently; people were waaaay too invested.

LangCleg · 14/07/2019 22:32

There is an MN trolls bit of Reddit? That's a bit meta.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 14/07/2019 22:34

lang

And there is a mntrolls spinoff as well

Apparently there was a big hooha and someone started a new group that basically just slags off the old group

I think

TinselAngel · 14/07/2019 22:43

MNTrolls Reddit doesn't even try to be secret! Shall we all flounce in different directions due to not knowing where the portal to the super secret Reddit is?

birdsdestiny · 14/07/2019 22:44

It's very funny to watch, they get very cross with each other.

LangCleg · 14/07/2019 22:47

Why is it a secret lair then?

I'm lost.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 14/07/2019 22:50

bunbury said it was a secret lair didnt they?

On reddit...i think there probably are a lot of secret groups on reddit and facebook

Im not on either

LangCleg · 14/07/2019 23:03

Just as well my secret lair isn't Reddit-based then.

(It's not behind the bike sheds either.)

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 14/07/2019 23:05

Mines at the bottom of the garden

FermatsTheorem · 14/07/2019 23:09

I'm not interested in your low-rent secret lairs behind the bike sheds or at the bottom of the garden. It's hollowed out volcano or nothing, as far as I'm concerned.

TinselAngel · 14/07/2019 23:16

Oh! Oh! Is it Tracy Island? Is it? Is it?

LangCleg · 14/07/2019 23:20

That would be telling.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 14/07/2019 23:21

fermats

My lair has a sofa and chairs in it...a coffee machine and a full bar

And i mean full Grin

Low rent it is not...

TheInebriati · 15/07/2019 00:06

Is it...a low bar or a high bar?

GirlDownUnder · 15/07/2019 00:45

As long as it's a wet bar!

I need a drink and it's only 09:15 in the upside down Gin

ZebrasAreBras · 15/07/2019 07:50

Crikey. I've been really busy all week/weekend - but what a shitshow certain threads have been this weekend... it reminds me of the olden days of BobBanana and Footlong. Anyone else remember those lovely MRA derailers?

Course, the MRA don't need to work nearly so hard these days, the TRA do it all for them.

ZebrasAreBras · 15/07/2019 07:54

SO, what I've learned over this weekend's threads - people don't like the term "peak-trans" - well what a surprise!

And a woman's tech group on FB must make space for MTF wanting advice on their abusive relationship. Or transphobia. Right.

JessicaWakefieldSV · 15/07/2019 08:18

Ha ha. I found it most amusing they got so outraged about derailment when we were doing it to prove a point. Tit for tat and all that.

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 15/07/2019 08:21

It’s been a funny old weekend Zebras

And the modding style at the weekends does complicate things. I was amused to see a post with an index finger pointing upwards deleted because someone had interpreted it as flipping the bird

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 15/07/2019 08:23

But yes, it is rather bewildering that on feminism chat we’re all supposed to try to make welcome people who clearly prioritise the feelings of males

It’s all a bit Confused

JessicaWakefieldSV · 15/07/2019 08:28

And the modding style at the weekends does complicate things.

They must know this. Why aren’t the mods spoken to about it?

CharlieParley · 15/07/2019 16:16

Just read the FB tech group thread after a week away from the internet and don't know where else to put my reaction. It's not that we seem to have had a new influx of GFs and TRAs giving this board an AIBU feel all too often.

No, I'm having a serious case of déja vu there and not for the obvious reason although the derailment, guilt tripping (always prioritise helping strangers? WTF?!), and calling the OP a liar seem all too familiar. So many women shared similar stories (remember the one about the woman who got kicked out of an endometriosis support group for telling a male he didn't menstruate?). And the reactions from the usual suspects are wholly predictable by now.

No my problem is that I'm German, too, and I can a) understand completely why the OP kept saying her English wasn't that great, b) what different ideas we have in Germany about what is rude and what isn't, c) how the subtle differences in how German society works are of course completely unknown to most non-Germans but they are so obvious to us we don't/can't explain them or don't explain them well.

I rarely felt socially awkward when I lived in Germany and I've done so persistently, every single day, for the 25 years that I've lived abroad. Missing social cues, feeling bewildered at people's reactions, misunderstanding and being misunderstood. All of those were painfully obvious to me in that thread.

But mostly I'm sad. Although I've heard a few things from friends and family, clearly things have progressed far further than I could have feared. And there is no public discussion in Germany at all. The German equivalent of Germaine Greer is trying (and being treated the same way) but there's nothing remotely like the grassroots movement in the UK.

ZebrasAreBras · 15/07/2019 16:32

Ah, Charley, I'm sorry to read that.

The grass roots movement here in the UK is really strong, there's been a real groundswell here in the past year. Being in the UK myself, I don't always realise that this is not the case everywhere.

I think if it weren't for the feminist movements here in the UK, those changes to the GRA would have just been nodded through. It's quite something that they've been halted (for now).
