Bunbury’s Public Service Announcement 2

The useful Bunbury Guide to Spotting Community Disruptors is constantly evolving.

The best research and advice is not to engage with community disruptors and trolls. As ever, if you suspect troll activity, report it to MNHQ.

This is a continuation of the first Public Service Announcement thread:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3321127-public-service-announcement

If and when you see threads plopped into FWR, especially a curious repeat of well worn topics, maybe check for poster history before engaging.

There are a number of posts/posters/threads that are reproduced on Twitter or Facebook to foment controversy using screen shots & flagging to either MNHQ to have threads or posters deleted. Sometimes, it’s used to approach commissioning editors with ideas for articles. It’s a tiresome tactic that we’ve had several community disruptor posters who themselves post the comments that they then highlight elsewhere as purported evidence of racism, religious intolerance, anti-men sentiments, or transphobia.

Some helpful links in following posts.

The only word that springs to mind is shitgibbons.

arranbubonicplague · 01/12/2018 23:12

only word that springs to mind is shitgibbons.

On the off chance that Bunbury might want the term researched for her guide it seems to have originated with David Quantick in NME :

I wrote the Veep line. It was originally “spunk-faced shitgibbon,” a phrase I used in a 1988 column in New Musical Express and have put in most of my writing since. PS I’m not Scottish and have nothing to do with bootlegging.

Bunbury is certain to find it a welcome addition!

ErrolTheDragon · 02/12/2018 00:32

I've been out tonight...I just read the first few posts of the thread I assume you're alluding to (unless there's another) ... Can't believe our lovely rufus has been 'disgusting'!ShockConfused
But probably not worth trying to find out WTF.

Datun · 02/12/2018 00:33

Never heard Rufus called anything, much less disgusting.

nauticant · 02/12/2018 11:46

Talking about Saturday night, there's a thread from last night that is almost too perfect a fit for this place. A teenage lesbian and the pressure she is under from TRAs.

ABitCrapper · 02/12/2018 11:54

Oh yes I had a look at that when it was first posted and decided to steer well clear! Screenshot harvesting I thought.

arranbubonicplague · 02/12/2018 12:05

It seems the screenshot technique is now being applied to Fionne Orlander:

LangCleg has just made this comment and I'm wondering how it should be classified within the Bunbury Guide. For context, the OP was asking for "Nice thread with lovely wishes for transpeople":

Mate, you started a thread asking for female emotional labour. You were never going to get all positive replies regardless of whether that emotional labour was to be performed for trans people or something else. What did you expect? It's a feminist board!

This isn't something I've seen in the research or general guides but it does strike me as an identifiable pattern of behaviour.

What is it? How should it be categorised? Or is it just an extension of the, "Do the intellectual labour of convincing me otherwise when I have no interest in being convinced"?

I love Lang’s ability to get to the heart of the matter with that quoted post.

ErrolTheDragon · 02/12/2018 14:32

I'm not sure, but tbh I'm inclined to think the least emotional labour is expended on that type of 'nice' thread if people who want to reply and don't find it irksome do so, and those who find it laborious don't.

Somewhat related... on the subject of 'teach me about feminism'. We had one last night which looks like same old time waster type (regardless of the sex of the OP). OTOH there's another which is simply asking where to start, and requesting reading matter. I'm inclined to think that's entirely reasonable to ask on this board (especially given the amount of junk on the web now). Handling both of these threads effectively with minimal wasted effort would be aided by a resource thread. Long ago, buffy suggested there should be a feminism 101 sticky (which didn't happen) - that thread, and others which I believe may have contained useful links are now unfortunately Swiss cheese because of buffy and others deregging and having their posts deleted.Sad

What do you reckon?

LangCleg · 02/12/2018 14:40

I wouldn't call it an ability! I'd call it me being my usual gobby self!

BlytheSpirits · 02/12/2018 14:40

We definitely need a 101 sticky.
