Bunbury’s Public Service Announcement 2

The useful Bunbury Guide to Spotting Community Disruptors is constantly evolving.

The best research and advice is not to engage with community disruptors and trolls. As ever, if you suspect troll activity, report it to MNHQ.

This is a continuation of the first Public Service Announcement thread:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3321127-public-service-announcement

If and when you see threads plopped into FWR, especially a curious repeat of well worn topics, maybe check for poster history before engaging.

There are a number of posts/posters/threads that are reproduced on Twitter or Facebook to foment controversy using screen shots & flagging to either MNHQ to have threads or posters deleted. Sometimes, it’s used to approach commissioning editors with ideas for articles. It’s a tiresome tactic that we’ve had several community disruptor posters who themselves post the comments that they then highlight elsewhere as purported evidence of racism, religious intolerance, anti-men sentiments, or transphobia.

Some helpful links in following posts.

I'm not sure, but tbh I'm inclined to think the least emotional labour is expended on that type of 'nice' thread if people who want to reply and don't find it irksome do so, and those who find it laborious don't.

Actually, perhaps me not just being gobby, but me giving other women permission to point out a load of old bollocks when they see one?

arranbubonicplague · 02/12/2018 14:58

I spend far too much time thinking about this stuff Grin.

As I've mentioned, my decision for my interactions is, "Do not engage" as I trust the research on that. Nonetheless:

mea culpa, some of my assessments may/will be wrong;

I realise that MN is a special case because of the way it is moderated (and that has its own virtues and special circumstances).

I know that a lack of nuance or different viewpoints can be part of the wider problem of preference falsification that is having an outing at present after Toby Young's allusion to it. That said, for me, this is MN's FWR board so those different viewpoints are readily available with minimal effort to find them.

There are only so many threads to which people can respond and nobody has a right to demand labour from others on social media.

No, you don't! It's interesting!

I’m not a wordsmith for sorry if comes across lame although nothing is lame as gold clutchbag now

I just want to say thank you, wish I could put into words & explain exactly how much have made and will make difference to not only me but my eldest when she comes back home from Uni for Xmas, who I’ve struggled to find way to not pick up my traits (ie the Jade / Beryl etc)

Thought I overcame everything and was strong instead I just put plasters over everything. Reading many threads here has stripped those off but shown me how way to fix the damage. So I can be the bloody strong woman I’ve always wished to be & achieve things held back from.

There is also my son, I’ve learnt some ways to put into practice, other than simply praying he doesn’t turn out like his father. I want him growing up understanding, respecting women especially boundaries, no is no end of.

Maybe the TRAs will one day understand why women ONLY places are so important and vital, last night influx’s got to me and I know with ‘school out’ soon it going to get worse. I’m not there yet strong enough to let it be water of ducks back so I have to bail out of here until I am, another reason why I have utmost respect for the women who continue to stand guard protecting for those that are unable at times.

One thing that remains unchanged and will never change is my acceptance that anyone with a penis will ever belong in woman’s space.

Biology and my faithful dictionary bible I shall take to my grave in many many years to come.

Sorry waffling and jumping on here.

The research is really interesting. We see all the types here!

It's so hard not to engage, though. I know I shouldn't, but it can make me feel like a bystander who by not saying anything, tacitly accepts what is being said or done.

Ereshkigal · 02/12/2018 19:36

but it can make me feel like a bystander who by not saying anything, tacitly accepts what is being said or done.

Yes, me too. I don't like to see shit go unchallenged.

I wonder if there's a sense for how many challenges or similar are enough? It's not uncommon for those threads to run to several hundred or even 1000 (recent threads) responses.

And, is there a feeling as to why the research advice on this is wrong?

I've already told my family that my gravestone shall say:

I find it relatively easy to ignore the JAQing and the MRA threads.

AngryAttackKittens · 02/12/2018 22:23

If everyone would stop putting out food for the MRAs so they would then be inclined to find more productive feeding grounds that would be lovely.

(Except the midnight misogynist. His threads always turn into a collective exercise in pisstaking, which allows everyone to let off steam and bond a bit.)

AngryAttackKittens · 02/12/2018 22:24

Correction - I wish everyone would, rather than everyone would. Clearly everyone will not no matter how often I hopefully suggest that they do.

AngryAttackKittens · 02/12/2018 22:31

Related! Today we have a thread which at this point really should be titled "Why everyone should stop engaging with this time wasting bloke".

AngryAttackKittens · 02/12/2018 22:32

WTF did I just say that violated talk guidelines? Are we back to "no humor allowed" again?

LangCleg · 02/12/2018 22:43

Eh? What happened there?

AngryAttackKittens · 02/12/2018 22:44

No idea. Are we not allowed to say "fuck" on MN any more? Cause that would be a bit silly.

WrathofbubonicKlop · 02/12/2018 22:50

You are so right, I feel like I know you all.

The MM words are rearranged so many times, it serves to increase everybody's knowledge, on "How to conduct a debate with someone who won't".
I like to call it my homework.

AngryAttackKittens · 02/12/2018 22:54

I certainly feel like I know what everyone would buy from the bakery if the answer to "what do they have?" was "everything"!

LangCleg · 02/12/2018 23:02

I still find it funny that you all boak at the WBH!

AngryAttackKittens · 02/12/2018 23:04

It's the warm milk, adding it makes me think of baby food.

ErrolTheDragon · 03/12/2018 00:19

I still find it funny that you all boak at the WBH!

I don't, I just view it as cheats' banana porridge. Not that I've tried WBH, but that's how I imagine it.

pombear · 03/12/2018 00:24

Fuck.

That is all.

Just testing on behalf of AAK.

ErrolTheDragon · 03/12/2018 00:25

Eh? What happened there?
...and who caused it to happen? I didn't see the deleted post but it doesn't seem like a point in the thread where anything particularly worthy of report would have been likely.Confused

pombear · 03/12/2018 00:26

(Though AAK it may be the grammar police as you just said humor, not humour, so I, for one, may be reporting you for that cos Hmm }

AngryAttackKittens · 03/12/2018 00:32

Sorry pom, it's expat spelling!
