Bunbury’s Public Service Announcement 2

The useful Bunbury Guide to Spotting Community Disruptors is constantly evolving.

The best research and advice is not to engage with community disruptors and trolls. As ever, if you suspect troll activity, report it to MNHQ.

This is a continuation of the first Public Service Announcement thread:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3321127-public-service-announcement

If and when you see threads plopped into FWR, especially a curious repeat of well worn topics, maybe check for poster history before engaging.

There are a number of posts/posters/threads that are reproduced on Twitter or Facebook to foment controversy using screen shots & flagging to either MNHQ to have threads or posters deleted. Sometimes, it’s used to approach commissioning editors with ideas for articles. It’s a tiresome tactic that we’ve had several community disruptor posters who themselves post the comments that they then highlight elsewhere as purported evidence of racism, religious intolerance, anti-men sentiments, or transphobia.

Some helpful links in following posts.

I'm sure that poster only ever uses lace-trimmed handkerchiefs.

GermaineBunbury · 01/04/2019 19:39

Don't be Ridiculous Errol. My hankies are large black-bordered cambric. I'm still in semi mourning for my dear Lætitia. My darling nephews hand-embroider me a dozen for my birthday ever year. Such a useful skill don't you think?

FermatsTheorem · 01/04/2019 19:54

Ah, the thread that keeps on giving. A thread on "community disruptors" and lo and behold, as if summoned by magic, a community disruptor intent on illustrating pretty much every one of the techniques we're discussing shows up to demonstrate how it's done.

It's textbook. And so meta. Keep up the good work. Seeing it "in captivity" as it were will help our thread readers to spot the same behaviour "in the wild."

ErrolTheDragon · 01/04/2019 20:07

Very educational, and this example channeling the Victorian ancestor of our own GB at least has some novelty value.

TinselAngel · 04/04/2019 08:34

I wish people would ignore the posters who come on here in order to try and demonstrate their superiority.

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 04/04/2019 08:36

For that individual any attention is validation

I’m astonished at MNHQ allowing it to continue tbh

TinselAngel · 04/04/2019 08:38

It makes me very uncomfortable to see MN being used for such obvious manipulation.

terryleather · 04/04/2019 08:41

Indeed *Bernard

MNHQ would benefit from reading the informative current thread on narcissistic behaviour...

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 04/04/2019 08:42

As I say, why MNHQ are tolerating manipulation of long standing users and disruption of the board by an individual who is clearly acting in bad faith is beyond me

TinselAngel · 04/04/2019 08:44

When an individual comes in and tramples all over an area that has previously been critical of them, they are obviously trying to intimidate people into not being critical of them in the future.

It feels like MN is hosting abusive behaviour.

terryleather · 04/04/2019 08:48

It is hosting abusive behaviour Tinsel.

Like Bernard I'm curious as to why...

TinselAngel · 04/04/2019 08:50

I've reported and made this point.

ClosdesMouches · 04/04/2019 08:50

Definitely a Bunbury moment

terryleather · 04/04/2019 08:54

I wonder what Bunbury has to say about the monkey dance..

TinselAngel · 04/04/2019 08:55

I can be manipulated at home and at work. I don't come onto MN for it.

GCAcademic · 04/04/2019 08:57

I wonder if, say, users on a certain sub-Reddit about MN blatantly started posting threads on here in order to generate material which they could then discuss on Reddit, MN would allow this to continue?

FermatsTheorem · 04/04/2019 08:59

Lest any particular new-ish poster (so eloquently described by Tinsel above) be thinking that MN can't ban them, by (spurious) analogy with Meghan Murhpy's fight against twitter, MN should bear in mind the crucial difference between the UK and the US in this instance: the US has a constitutional right to free speech and case law has already established (see Trump's attempted blocking of people on his twitter feed) that twitter counts as a public space analogous to a town hall meeting.

No such considerations apply in terms of this poster. They've started not one, but two deliberately goady threads (deleted) which they have blatantly mined for screenshots - the evidence is all over their twitter feed. Their behaviour has resulted in a third thread, filled with useful resources on dealing with abusive behaviour both in RL and online, being pulled. They refer to MN as "nuttersnet" on their twitter feed, using disablist language. All these would be ample grounds for banning someone.

Furthermore, MN can point to multiple instances of having permanently banned GC feminists whose behaviour and language they considered overstepped their terms and conditions of use - so this poster cannot argue that they are being singled out because they are trans.

The only reason MN could possibly have for not banning this individual would be the financial cost of fighting that individual's long track record of bring spurious court cases against individuals and bodies who have upset them online. But it's a balancing act - cost of getting rid of one incredibly disruptive poster, versus cost of losing a whole board which generates a huge amount of traffic and hence advertising revenue.

LangCleg · 04/04/2019 09:01

Well, I'm not seeing the Walking on Eggshells video in the side bar any more. Has MNHQ made its choice? Because this is so blatant it's just plain embarrassing.

JessicaWakefieldSVH · 04/04/2019 09:04

I can be manipulated at home and at work. I don't come onto MN for it.

Indeed. I don’t know what more to do, I’ve sent all the links to their tweets referring to this as Nuttersnet, us as extremists and idiots, they’ve had more than one thread zapped, at least two comments... it is very odd

FermatsTheorem · 04/04/2019 09:05

Good point, Lang, albeit depressing in its implications.

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 04/04/2019 09:06

I can be manipulated at home and at work. I don't come onto MN for it

Very much this

TinselAngel · 04/04/2019 09:07

It will potentially alert attention to the existence of certain support threads, from people who were the perpetrators of the issues discussed in said support threads.

ErrolTheDragon · 04/04/2019 09:11

When an individual comes in and tramples all over an area that has previously been critical of them, they are obviously trying to intimidate people into not being critical of them in the future.

That may be their motivation, but as far as I can see it's not even slightly working, merely generating a Streisand effect. (Caveat - I may have missed something, inc. the pulled threads, but I find it unlikely the interloper has covered themselves in glory)

The only reason MN could possibly have for not banning this individual ...

I dunno, maybe they're just letting them continue scoring own goals?

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 04/04/2019 09:14

Bearing in mind how happy MNHQ have been to wield the ban hammer over gender critical women, this current behaviour looks distinctly odd.

If they had been happy to let all users remain it would be one thing, but they have proved that they’ll ban when it suits

TinselAngel · 04/04/2019 09:15

I dunno, maybe they're just letting them continue scoring own goals?

If this is the case I think it ignores the insidious effect it will have on the confidence of people who have been the victims of this sort of behaviour before, to feel able to continue to contribute.
