Apologies if there is already a thread about this. Channel 4, 10.00 tonight. 'Stella O'Malley considers the huge rise in numbers of young people embarking on gender transition, through the prism of the gender identity issues she experienced when she was a child.' According to The Times no TRA groups were prepared to contribute to this . Stella feels this may be because she was a tomboy as a young girl, (even insisting she was a boy until she hit puberty), and is now a confident, mature woman who believes that nowadays she would be pressured to go down the transition route. Sounds like it will be worth watching.

Thank you Stella.

Ariclock · 22/11/2018 17:46

That was a brilliant show. I felt so sad for all of the young people on the show who believe that the transcult offers a cure for their body insecurities. She mentioned the link between autism and gender dysmorphia which was good. I think more people need to hear about that. Well done Stella Wine

Langcleg; it wasn't bullshit that I wrote ( though I'm sure I often do), but a genuine question. I did not know that he was connected with the Beaumont Society. Though I do know that there are varied views on the BS in transgender areas, so he could still be an " instinctive denier". I don't know. Plenty of transvestites are; the splendidly entertaining Grayson Perry, for example. Who I met once, at an Art College. he was very encouraging and nice with the students, but thinks people like me are TVs, really. But anyway, I was enquiring, not laying any laws down. Do you know what Gender Clinic the guy in the documentary worked for for 10 years? Not CXH, I think.

happydappy2 · 22/11/2018 17:57

Stella well done for a brilliant informative programme-groundbreaking in this heated climate!
One thing I personally don't understand is this-if a child goes on puberty blockers, then cross sex hormones etc etc, does that mean they never actually go through puberty and their brain stays that of a pre pubescent child? If anyone can clarify I'd be very grateful.

lassupthebrew · 22/11/2018 17:58

If this programme prevents even one child from becoming an unwelcome statistic and makes a few people with influence realise that running a social experiment on British children in the 21st century is never justified however much politically correct ideology says it is then it will deserve the BAFTA I have every expectation it will be nominated for next year.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 22/11/2018 18:03

I have every expectation it will be nominated for next year

I very much doubt it, the fact this even made television is amazing considering the push from above.

RepealTheGRA · 22/11/2018 18:14

Huge thanks to you Stellaomalley that’s the best thing I’ve watched on this subject. I hope every teacher in the country watches it and also parents.

You handled a difficult and complex subject brilliantly.

I too felt incredibly sorry for Debbie’s wife and children and hope they have have the support they need. If your lurking Flowers

Crookedcolours · 22/11/2018 18:34

Happy dappy my understanding is that puberty is about hormones being released and triggering physical maturity, it doesn't impact mental maturity

Crooked - there is substantial evidence that puberty has a profound effect in brain development.

What we don't know is if someone takes puberty blockers and then moves onto hormones, what then happens to the brain.

Maybe children who are put on blockers and go straight onto hormones have immature brain development.

No one is allowed to study that though.

billydilly · 22/11/2018 18:53

Did I spot Magdalen Berns at the Bristol fiasco? Filming the activists?

NoseringGirl · 22/11/2018 18:54

Yes billy it was definitely Magdalene!

Rachelover40 · 22/11/2018 19:03

When the programme got to that part it was so scary. All those angry, foul mouthed people in masks, very intimidating. It's not right.

I was glad to see those two young people interviewed and talking about how they felt having reached so far in the trans programme but not going further, having no real information about the process and ending up, basically, as neither one nor the other.

The wife of the trans woman being so good and loyal but obviously strained, living one hour at a time.

Puberty blockers, a micro penis, double mastectomy - it's just so wrong to allow kids to go through that.

billydilly · 22/11/2018 19:03

Wow, for such an incredible force of nature she's tiny!

Judder · 22/11/2018 19:24

Thanks Stellaomalley - a brilliant documentary. You looked concerned at the event where the TRAs were being so shouty and violent. I would have been.

So much woman-hatred.And from mostly young women as well. Makes me so sad.

NeurotrashWarrior · 22/11/2018 19:32

Oh happydappy I'd never thought of that Sad

NeurotrashWarrior · 22/11/2018 19:33

Worth remembering that the human brain doesn't fully mature till age 25.

Italiangreyhound · 22/11/2018 19:34

Brilliant programme.

AspieAndProud · 22/11/2018 19:34

Was just going to say that!

AspieAndProud · 22/11/2018 19:35

Meant was going to say tge brain doesn’t mature till 25.

NeurotrashWarrior · 22/11/2018 19:36

Great minds aspie...

NeurotrashWarrior · 22/11/2018 19:46

Potentially what could happen (I'm not an expert but it's been talked about in child protection training I've had) is that (crudely) in puberty the brain goes through a mass reorganisation similar to what's happened age 0-3 (cause of the toddler tantrum years), which might not happen?

In cp / child development training this was highlighted as a potential time for some reversal of the damage done due to early abuse/ major attachment issues. But I have no idea if this is in anyway hormonally driven, nor if affected by the sex specific hormones.

ProfessoressWoland · 22/11/2018 19:50

I hadn't seen any footage from the Bristol meeting before this. Seeing that mindless aggression left me speechless, but thank you Stella and everyone who was involved in the making of the programme, and especially those who agreed to appear in it!

KatVonGulag · 22/11/2018 19:50

I am shaking my head at the trans activists shouting the programme down. They really should have participated.

Pink News:
'Channel 4’s Trans Kids is slammed for ‘completely failing’ trans community'
(extract)
Trans campaigners have heavily criticised Channel 4’s documentary Trans Kids: It’s Time to Talk, accusing producers of “completely failing” trans people by implying that being trans is “just a phase.” (continues)
“Journalists and broadcasters have completely failed trans people and their families in this country,” wrote journalist Paris Lees.

“Failing to inform the public about the facts is one thing. But this relentless, mean, obsessive campaign of misinformation is unforgivable.”

Author and columnist Juno Dawson, meanwhile, hit out at the show for suggesting to children that being trans is a phase.

“If you’re watching the #TransKids thing on Channel 4, all I’ll add is I knew I was a girl when I was four or five and was told it was a phase,” she wrote.

“HERE WE ARE 33 YEARS LATER, MOTHERF*CKERS.”

She added that her life was made more difficult because she wasn’t given hormone blockers as a child.

“Oh god how different my life would have been if I’d been listened to; believed; treated and received blockers,” she continued.

“But no, I was told it was a phase.”

Juno Dawson criticised Channel 4’s Trans Kids: It’s Time to Talk on Twitter.
She added: “I’ve said this before and I suspect I’ll say it again…When it comes to trans lives, you can listen to trans EXPERIENCES or cisgender OPINIONS. Your choice.”

Channel 4’s Trans Kids is “dreadful”
Newsreader and former Celebrity Big Brother contestant India Willoughby also took to social media, branding the programme as “dreadful.”

“Going through a ‘phase’ is not being trans Stella,” she said.

“That’s why nothing permanent happens to those taking the medical route for a long time.

“Even if Self ID comes in, the medical route will still be slow. Dreadful Ch4.

“Dreadful. Totally weighted. Televised Mumsnet.”

Trans ally and writer Matthew Todd posted a message of support to trans children, while criticising the programme.

“Hope actual trans young people know we support you,” he wrote.

“This nastiness will eventually die away. We will get there in the end.

“You have the right to be who you are – not what other people say you should be. They used to tell us being gay was a phase, how could we know etc!”
