Another day, another outrage. Comic Relief's Women's Wednesdays launches with a bit about, umm, Lili Elba. Because there obviously aren't any women they could honour Angry

Madly mixing metaphors there

Charliethefeminist · 15/11/2018 08:25

Er lenny Henry Hmm Sir

ShotsFired · 15/11/2018 08:45

Their twitter feed is a riot of woke for several days. Whoever has been let loose has been at it for a while already.

But this has spectacularly backfired and I am heartened to see the tide turning.

AngryAttackKittens · 15/11/2018 08:50

Even for people not actively coming from a GC perspective surely dragging Comic Relief, which is meant to make people laugh and feel good and give money, into one of the most guaranteed to piss someone off no matter what perspective you take political issues going is just a terrible idea.

Knicknackpaddyflak · 15/11/2018 09:08

I see one or two tweets about 'never mind the nasty t**fs'. Sigh. I wonder at what point it will dawn on the Woke money holders that not only are a large section of the general public bluntly not buying this, but that that section is getting steadily larger.

JoanSummers · 15/11/2018 09:10

This person's @sashh tweets are the perfect response to comic relief.

If you're a gender critical or radical feminist tweeter, please consider joining the poster in the images by filling comic relief's mentions with the names of actual women because these tweets really illustrate how much they have fucked up.

Interestingly, the account which has been tweeting two or three times a day, is now silent for 20 hours.

feministme · 15/11/2018 12:59

@Charliethefeminist yes and both the apostrophe challenged social media manager ' who yesterday bemoaned " T.E.R.F.'s [sic] are the worst.... " and the Executive Director Brand and & Creative have now got their tweets locked down.

I guess there is an emergency meeting going on working out how to respond (if only they were paying more attention before!)

The social media manager seems to have only been in post for a few weeks, so you could put the tweets down to inexperience and naive overenthusiasm for wokeness ... but the candidates for 'Women Wednesday' and blog post must have been signed off by someone more senior.

use the hashtag #youcouldhavepicked on Twitter, and tweet to nominate any amazing woman you've heard of

PurpleOva · 15/11/2018 13:12

The thing is there are ways they could have sold this and not got the backlash that they have had.

If they had said "As it is transgender awareness week, we are kicking off women's Wednesdays with a ground breaking transwoman" or words to that effect, and they would have covered themselves a bit.

The announcement was so unthought out that it had basic grammatical errors though, so I don't think the people who made the decision were thinking much about it or the impact it might have!

candidpeel · 15/11/2018 13:21

And 20 hours later, this is what they have come up with in response.... Sad Angry

I have tweeted Comic Relief @-ing all their women honorary trustees listed at the bottom of www.comicrelief.com/about-comic-relief/meet-the-team asking why aren't any of them considered "inspirational". As AngryAttackKittens says, there's probably not a lot of point tweeting just to the dimwit operating the twitter account.

hackmum · 15/11/2018 13:32

I enjoyed this comment: "Well done. Sexism, homophobia AND apostrophe abuse. It’s the unholy trifecta."

SandyDrawsBadly · 15/11/2018 13:33

Was there really, honestly and seriously not one SINGLE FUCKING WOMAN they could think of as aspirational?

hackmum · 15/11/2018 13:34

If they believe that every individual "has the right to be who they are and to define their own identity", then they believe it's fine to define your own age? Your own ethnicity? For adult males to dress up in nappies and go to nursery? For white people to take advantage of scholarships designed to help black people?

Do these people not possess a brain with which to think?

I'm just enraged by the sheer fucking stupidity all over again.

candidpeel · 15/11/2018 13:40

Comic Relief firmly believes every individual has the right to be who they are and to define their own identity.......so they firmly believe in the right of Rachel Dolezal and Anthony Lennon to define as black, for
Emile Ratelband to define as 45 years old, Steph-On-Knee to define as a 6 year old, and David "Lucy" Challenor as a 10 year old??

birdsdestiny · 15/11/2018 13:59

That's great though. I am identifying as a charity. I assume they will be sending me a substantial grant.

Juells · 15/11/2018 14:33

Sorry, HRTFT because I went down the twitter rabbit hole. Apologies if someone has posted this already...went to the Comic Relief main twitter page twitter.com/comicrelief and they've gone overboard on trans-supporting. I guess that's why they've chosen Lili Elba?

Knicknackpaddyflak · 15/11/2018 14:51

'Everyone has the right to define their own identity' except 51% of the population born female.

We'll define their identity for them, without consulting them, and then look sad and reproachful and righteous when they protest about it.

Badgerthebodger · 15/11/2018 14:58

Oh FFS. Anything else? I wouldn’t even care if, like someone above said, CR had included Elbe as a nod to trans awareness week (I do seriously question if there is anyone in the UK who is not aware of trans people)

Just FFS. Just that. Sick to death of organisations who are drowning in woke.

DisrespectfulAdultFemale · 15/11/2018 15:17

Fuck off, Comic Relief, and take your allies and woke bros with you.

terryleather · 15/11/2018 15:32

Just FFS. Just that. Sick to death of organisations who are drowning in woke.

I have to make myself stay away from Twitter as much as possible as it's not good for my mh, but was on last night and saw that post plus today's utter bs about being able to "define your own identity" so had to wade in.

The sooner the cult of gender identity dies a fiery death, the happier I'll be...

JoanSummers · 15/11/2018 15:32

Did Elba actually identify as a woman or is this more retrospective transgendering?

pearlkent · 15/11/2018 15:34

Wonder if Roberta Cowell will be the next inspirational woman to feature on Comic Relief:

www.telegraph.co.uk/goodlife/11941341/The-true-story-behind-Britains-first-transsexual-woman.html

I heard about this 'inspirational' person on the last week's Michael Portillo documentary about the Cambridge Military Hospital (in Aldershot) where Harold Gillies pioneered reconstructive plastic surgery for disfigured First World War soldiers. At the end of the programme he revealed that Gillies had ventured into experimental gender reassignment surgery.
