Harassment of children in legal red light zone in Holbeck

I’ve just read an article posted in a feminist group I’m part of on FB. It’s a Daily Mail article, detailing the harassment of young children in Holbeck where the legal red light zone is. Men offering parents money to rape their children. Most shockingly, a grandmother pushing a buggy with a four month old baby was offered money for an hour alone with the baby.

I can’t get the article out of my head. I don’t live a million miles away (thankfully not close) and it makes the these depraved men seem so much more real. I can’t understand how anyone could defend this legal zone - there has been a murder, rapes, sexual assault and it sounds like a free for all for all kinds of terrible men with monstrous appetites. And neither the council nor the police seem willing to help or even acknowledge the festering horror they have created, or allowed to exist openly. Somehow they have empowered these sick, twisted fuckers to feel able to ask to rape children in broad daylight; so pornsick and warped that they imagine this to be reasonable or likely or simply get a thrill from the violation of frightening and upsetting women and children by voicing their hideous thoughts. What is happening and why is no one acting to stop it?

Sadly, it's the next step in behaviour towards others. Once the message goes out that women are legally for sale, I suppose they'll start to push the boundaries.

Chillingly, I can imagine that some desperate parents might actually take up these men's offers if they're desperate for money and living in poverty. It happens in the Philippines apparently.

This country is so fucked. Ds2 is talking about leaving when he's older and I don't blame him.

I expect the police are too busy protecting the misogynistic special snowflakes and sex offenders to actually do anything about the citizens who are being harassed.

FekkoThePenguin · 14/11/2018 18:09

Men. Words fail me.

AssassinatedBeauty · 14/11/2018 18:15

So, this experiment will be shut down immediately because surely no one would tolerate this continuing? That's what's going to happen, right?

I know the answer....of course not, because protecting men who want to buy sex is waay more important.

FekkoThePenguin · 14/11/2018 18:17

Who is responsible? Whose great idea was thus and who advised then? Why is it being allowed to continue? Where are the police?

LaserShark · 14/11/2018 18:25

A prostitute was murdered in the trial period and that didn’t put a stop to it, so this won’t either. I just can’t find the words to express how hideous these men are and how despicable it is that they have been emboldened like this.

Fekko, by all accounts, the police have washed their hands of it. They aren’t supposed to make arrests or give cautions for soliciting/kerb crawling etc overnight but they seem to have taken that to mean they can stop policing the area altogether. The grandmother rang the police to report the paedophile and apparently got no response at all.

FekkoThePenguin · 14/11/2018 18:29

But it's their fucking job! They can't decide what is the law and where it applies (or not).

YoloThankfully · 14/11/2018 18:31

I'm so sick of this world right now Sad how can nothing be done about that report. What does it take? A child being raped and then killed from it? There's just no words for it. Animals look after each other more than humans. Yet we're the evolved ones.

flashbac · 14/11/2018 18:32

What else can we expect from Leeds where women's meetings are cancelled last minute and other stuff ppl well-versed in GC stuff already know about...

Of course an area where women are for sale is acceptable there.

Juells · 14/11/2018 18:33

Imagine what the prostitutes are exposed to, with no protection :(

LaserShark · 14/11/2018 18:36

Juells, I thought of that. Those women are in so much danger from a policy which claims to be protecting them.

I wonder if they'll do something if a child disappears and is raped and murdered?

Ds1 stayed with uni friends near this area when he was visiting. He said you can't go out at night and it felt very threatening.

Mooey89 · 14/11/2018 18:51

This is awful, of course, but do you have a source other than the daily fascist?
I think prostitution in general should be legalised to make it safer for the women, it’s the men in charge and those who buy the sex at fault so in theory I don’t disagree with holbeck providing it’s adequately supported ( not saying it is)
I would like to read a more credible source really.

Knicknackpaddyflak · 14/11/2018 18:54

Those women are in so much danger

One of the many reasons that I want to spit whenever I hear the phrase 'sex work'. No little girl ever said 'I want to grow up and have my body used by men in constant danger of my life while being regarded as outside of any protection by law. Gosh it will be empowering.'

ResistanceIsNecessary · 14/11/2018 18:56

Used to live their in the days before the zone - police turned a blind eye back then as well. Harassment was prevalent and the managed zone just made it worse.

UpstartCrow · 14/11/2018 19:03

The number of sex attacks and rapes in Beeston and Holbeck has doubled since the managed area was introduced.

A teacher was abducted, dragged into a car by 4 men, driven to a house and raped. They wont be charged.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 14/11/2018 19:06

"I think prostitution in general should be legalised"

Really?

That's an unusual stance. How will it work with health and safety regs and all the things that need to happen?

Generally it's decriminalisation that's called for, which admits really that it's too unsafe for women for it to ever work as a legal "job like any other".

NothingOnTellyAgain · 14/11/2018 19:07

I was going to link that about the teacher as well.

Rape is legal is bottom line. She was abducted for fucks sake.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 14/11/2018 19:15

So the way this is reported.

Headline:
"Teacher living next to 'legal' red light district was raped by man who believed she was a prostitute"

No scare quotes around believed she was a prostitute.

Teachers story > DV. Scare quotes around abusive: "Alice had been moved to the refuge in Holbeck earlier this year after initially being placed in one in Chapeltown following treatment for mental health problems as a result of the domestic violence she suffered at the hands of her “abusive” partner."

Now, what happened:

"“There were 4 men in the car. They wound down the windows and started asking me to get in. They explained they wanted me to go with them to a party and it would be fun. I didn’t want to go with them but a couple of them got out of the car and took hold of me.

“Despite my protests they bundled me into the car. I couldn’t escape. Looking back I realise I was paralysed by it all and couldn’t believe what was happening.”

When they arrived at the house, she realised there was no party and the men starting asking her the prices for sexual services and offering her cash.

“I was terrified. I told them I’m not a prostitute but they didn’t believe me because they found me walking in the street Holbeck. I have old self harm scars on my arms and they rolled up my sleeves and said the scars must be from doing drugs. I’ve never used drugs.”"

Right so she protested, told them she wasn't a prostitute, didn't want to go, it's not like she was silent and compliant. And yet the mens story that they "believed she was a prostitute" is repeated as if they absolutely certainly 100% believed that. And even if they did, why does that make it OK to rape her? She was saying no no I'm not a prostitute they said yes you are look at your arms and raped her. That is still a crime. For fucks sake.

Just for fucks sake.

These are the police with some of the grooming gangs on their patch, right? Operating for years with no bother? Arresting the girls instead? I think so.

Police are misogynist scumbags shocker.

MagicMix · 14/11/2018 19:19

This makes me so angry. People who think it should be legal to buy sex are trash.

Tell men it's normal and socially acceptable to pay to rape an adult women and it should come as a surprise to absolutely nobody that men who are even more depraved are emboldened.

FermatsTheorem · 14/11/2018 19:27

Wasn't it today that there was meant to be a council meeting assessing the "managed zone"?

I don't know how WYP can look themselves in the mirror. They can send officers on jollies all over the fucking country to harass people about tweets which have evidenced "wrong think" but they can't be bothered to follow up a threat of rape directed at a child.

Racecardriver · 14/11/2018 19:30

A picket line? With cameras? And a Facebook page?

Mooey89 · 14/11/2018 19:31

I’m sorry, I’m trash? Because I have a different opinion to you?

I fucking abhore the vile scumbags who think buying into the exploitation of women for their own gratification is acceptable. I’m disgusted by the pimps and gangs who exploit vulnerable women.

But making it illegal doesn’t help, it doesn’t make it safer. What is needed is better support services to reduce the vulnerability that these women are exposed to and to try to reduce the danger they face.

There was a long thread with links to articles/websites produced by people living in this hell-hole. This has been reported by other sources. I'm glad The Daily Mail reports this - it gets to a wide readership. There is nothing in the material produced by residents in front line which is any different from what The Mail reported.

Not impressed at all with your feeble attempts to minimise the horror of this.
