Looks like Jane Fae is on to explain why it's not the same as transgender...

Has anyone got a link to this piece? I don't want to go through the rest of the program if I can avoid it.

Thanks.

Datun · 13/11/2018 12:54

.I live in the Netherlands and that Dutch bloke is like pretty much every Dutch bloke i have ever met. Straightforward, direct and unable (or unwilling) to do a polite little dance around feelings.

That's interesting. I wonder why that is? I quite like a bit clarity myself.

Datun, one theory on the Dutch personality of directness. To make the polders and manage the water flow and systems of canals and dikes, (which stop mass flooding) , all the community had to work together and be clear and unambiguous about managing the everday threat of nature together. Also everyone's voice (man, woman, child) was valued as everyone had a contribution to make in their own communitys struggle against potential flooding. Even today, the King is head of the (centuries old) national water committee.

Today, the Dutch still value listening to every voice, no matter whose it is, but also reserving the right for factual and direct argument against. Its a very non hierarchical society, with low tolerance for bullshitters.

TorchesTorches

Thank you for that. Fascinating. And very appealing.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 13/11/2018 15:46

I love Dutch culture. It's the only other country I've ever imagined living in. I remember watching a hugely tall woman in stilt heels and fetish gear crossing the road with a few little old ladies and no one was reacting. A very courteous society.

We have long term extended Dutch family friends and they tell us that being very open is central to their culture.

They have one of the lowest teen pregnancy rate in the world. They don't just cover contraception/STIs. They teach about consent and coach young girls to recognize and counter exploitation.

LikeDust · 13/11/2018 15:55

I love the work ethic and pragmatic sense of humour of the Dutch. That thing about everyone needing to pitch in to prevent floods makes perfect sense.

Binglebong · 13/11/2018 16:32

Thank you Empress.

EmpressAdultHumanFemale · 13/11/2018 16:40

You're welcome, Binglebong. Nobody should miss this!

boatyardblues · 13/11/2018 16:43

You get the same vibe from Icelanders. I suppose living on a volcanic island in the freezing north of the Atlantic with imminent natural disaster and a limited set of resources at your disposal keeps the population focussed on pragmatic solutions.

Annandale · 13/11/2018 18:54

It's surely not that simple in Dutch culture. Relatives who live there say there is an unspoken agreement that things you put away from the main thoroughfares stay hidden even if in reality they are completely visible. Hence the forbidden attic churches of Amsterdam, hence the Frank family surviving as long as they did.

KatVonGulag · 13/11/2018 19:00

I wouldn't fib on tinder. If I was on it. Because why would I start something with a lie Jane Fae?

KatVonGulag · 13/11/2018 19:01

To be honest I thought the guy came across well. The Dutch one I mean.

boatyardblues · 13/11/2018 19:16

DH just watched the clip. He shuddered when JF did that coy little aside about fibbing on Twitter.

Iused2BanOptimist · 13/11/2018 19:43

One can only imagine the shock when a tinder user rocks up to a hot date and meets JF. A little lie! I'm seriously considering joining up with the sole purpose of finding that profile but I wouldn't know where to look and what would I say to my poor DH if he happened upon my activities?

donquixotedelamancha · 13/11/2018 19:46

why would I start something with a lie Jane Fae?

You might as well ask why she breathes oxygen. The two process are equally fundamental parts of her nature.

needmorespace · 13/11/2018 19:51

KatVonGulag Grin Grin Grin

Binglebong · 13/11/2018 20:13

Well that was odd. He seems a bit of an arse to me but I wish him every success. Or none and a nice precedent

Budgieinaberet · 13/11/2018 22:01

I'd love to see that guys profile on Tinder
make of that what you will

OlennasWimple · 13/11/2018 22:17

The Dutch tend to be, IME, direct, pragmatic and liberal. Hence the red light district in Amsterdam and the weed cafes

I know one Dutch transwoman - lived most of their adult life as a gay man, then decided to transition in their 40s. A far cry from the blue haired snowflake TRAs...

Electron1 · 13/11/2018 23:58

I may have misheard on the VD show but I thought Emile was with someone and having twins? Bit confused about the tinder thing....but can see why he wants a new mortgage with seven kids.

LuggsaysNotaWomen · 13/11/2018 23:58

Who is swiping right on Jane Fae's Tinder picture, is what I'd like to know?

Ereshkigal · 14/11/2018 00:20

Just watched the clip again and it was even funnier a second time 😁Grin

Ereshkigal · 14/11/2018 00:20

Excellent MN has resolved the emoji situation Smile

moofolk · 14/11/2018 00:32

Ha! I thought this guy was a total dick when I read about him but now I love him. Hilarious.
