Looks like Jane Fae is on to explain why it's not the same as transgender...

Good point. It's always about blokes bending the law to stick their penises where they aren't wanted.

cupofteaandcake · 13/11/2018 08:30

A couple of things struck me. The first was that actually Emile easily looks younger than his actual age but JF doesn't pass. The way VD questionned Emile was quite aggressive and dismissive, I've never heard a trans questionned like this, they always seem to get the tilting head, pained sympathy look. Let's face it many of us feel and look younger than we actually are however we don't try and get into spaces that are restricted by age.

AngryAttackKittens · 13/11/2018 08:44

If I was to hypothetically accommodate Emile's wishes all that would happen is that he might show up in Tinder matches (fine - unlike TRAs he probably wouldn't send the flying monkeys after me on Twitter if I said no thanks) and he'd probably keep working for longer (positive thing, if he wants to and is still able to).

If I was to agree to accommodate Jane Fae's wishes then I might be forced to get naked with Jane in the changing room at the pool, and so might my niece, who's only a few years away from the age at which Jane suggested that it might be appropriate for young girls to start appearing in porn. If either myself or my niece objects Jane might make our lives very uncomfortable, shame us on social media, etc.

Yep, I think I'm going to go with "if we have to accommodate one of these people, I choose Emile".

identifies as a batty old lady

Yes! I spent quite a lot of time staring at Fae’s Crochet cardigan and thinking WTF?

You’ve gone to all this effort only to shop at Per Una?

It was distracting

AngryAttackKittens · 13/11/2018 08:57

Does this answer the question of who that one notoriously awful M&S dress was aimed at? Finally!

Electron1 · 13/11/2018 09:04

I was wracking my brains to work out where you could buy such a garment and imagined it could only have been home knit/crocheted by it's wearer. It truly was terrible.

Ageism makes me feel a tad uncomfortable.

AngryAttackKittens · 13/11/2018 09:18

I have this sort of mental image of the Dutch as mostly being aggressively healthy and physically robust, which Emile is reinforcing. Possibly I'm wrong and Holland is full of people who look like the undead. Wasn't when I was there though.

Electron1 · 13/11/2018 09:19

Hangy up ribbons! I always wondered what they were called.

I compared turkey necks during the show, always a giveaway and I'm afraid Emile has had many more Christmases on that measure in my estimation.

Budgieinaberet · 13/11/2018 09:20

I also thought VD was very rude towards Emile, messing around on her screen.
I hope VD realises the BBC aren't very keen on older women.

Beerincomechampagnetastes · 13/11/2018 09:21

Your mental image is correct angryi lived in Holland for years - they are also totally unapologetic and intolerant of snowflake behaviour. They will not be complicit in the type of fawning JF et al require.

AngryAttackKittens · 13/11/2018 09:21

Hangy up ribbons! I always wondered what they were called.

I thought they were called "those bloody things that I'm trying to figure out if I can cut out without damaging the garment".

Budgieinaberet · 13/11/2018 09:22

Yes electron it's a technical term that I made up

BettyDuMonde · 13/11/2018 09:22

I cannot abide trailing hanger-ribbons.

Cut those fuckers off, for pities sake.

Zeugma · 13/11/2018 09:23

As I mentioned upthread, I was watching this as I queued at the bank and it was on a small screen a reasonable distance away, with no sound. I saw immediately that it was YoungOldGuy but couldn't work out who else they'd got on to 'debate' with him.

I suspected it might be a trans spokesperson but from the general body outline I honestly thought - until they came in for a captioned close-up - that it was Jan Morris. Aged 92.

Bit unfortunate for the 61-year-old Jane Fae. And to counter any accusations of ageism, I'm not that much younger than JF and that crocheted cardi wouldn't be coming anywhere near me, thanks very much Hmm

AngryAttackKittens · 13/11/2018 09:25

My stepmother is 69 and wouldn't be seen dead in that thing.

Sometimes what initially appears to be the dear old lady is the big bad wolf in disguise. Perhaps not the best disguise to choose, given how universally known that particular story is.

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 13/11/2018 09:33

I’m baffled by short sleeved knitwear full stop tbh

VickyEadie · 13/11/2018 09:33

JF is getting about a bit media-wise, eh? Last week discussing Spam hoarding with Jeremy Vine, this week telling another human being why their self-id notion was wrong. The' irony of the year' prize has a late but very strong entry there...

AngryAttackKittens · 13/11/2018 09:35

I'm baffled by crochet as clothing. Don't kill me, crafty people!

Especially crochet swimwear. Remember when that was briefly a thing? My mate had an off-white crochet swimsuit that she couldn't actually go in the water in.

HamrunHarpie · 13/11/2018 09:36

Tell people a lie over and over again, they begin to believe it. Most people are not engaged in Gender Critical or Transgender politics so will believe what they see - and what they see is a lovely, dear old lady (who happened to be a man), who has dodgy taste in cardigans.

AngryAttackKittens · 13/11/2018 09:38

Having showed that clip to multiple friends and family members, I am fairly certain that is not what most people see.

My DH reminded me that it's been a while since we've seen The Dark Crystal, so there's that.

Electron1 · 13/11/2018 09:41

I agree that VD was rude to Emile, she's a big supporter of transing children so anyone who doesn't show the extreme reverence she thinks transgender is entitled to is not going to get polite treatment.
