This piece seems to have sent our favourite Doctor into an apoplectic rage yet again so I assume it is worth reading.

Always a good sign

That final piece about Roger Scruton:

The new law that states that nobody who has ever been possessed of a right-wing opinion can be appointed to public office is about to be invoked in the case of Sir Roger Scruton.
...
we should be wary of the contrary view, too — which is that Scruton should be given his job precisely because he does not seem to like homosexuals...

Is Liddle using a rhetorical device here or is it an actual law?

Popchyk · 11/11/2018 10:49

"Women don’t look at me at all any more, or if they do it’s with either disgust or pity, so I see Emile’s gripe."

Did make me laugh.

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 11/11/2018 10:52

I don’t normally like Rod Liddle but he’s bang on here.

ElfrideSwancourt · 11/11/2018 10:59

Never thought I'd agree with Rod Liddle about anything but this is spot on.

RedHoodGirl · 11/11/2018 11:12

I’m sorry, but as a feminist I have no time for the misogynistic ramblings of a man who assaults his pregnant girlfriend. He clearly is no supporter of women’s rights or equality, unless it affords him the opportunity to attack a group he dislikes even more.

You might not like RL, or the politics of the Spectator, or the Murdoch press. But at least they have had the guts to publish articles criticising this kind of nonsense.
The sources that I used to align myself with - the Guardian and the BBC - would have women lie down and let all of this happen. Be women. Be nice. So fuck that.
What's wrong with recognising truth? It's the old Jordan Peterson thing again 'I don't agree with everything he says, so he can NEVER be right'

LurkingLizzy · 11/11/2018 11:42

Awaiting the usual 'even a broken clock...' comment. Funny how it's never used with Posie.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 11/11/2018 11:51

Thanks electron Flowers

The left would argue that these are outliers, anomalies, and that they should not dissuade us from allowing people to be whatever they want to be, which is a liberating thing and rather marvellous. I don’t think so. They may be outliers at the moment, but not for long. The rapid procession of transgendered men onto women-only Labour Party shortlists suggests otherwise. And the McKinnon case presages an end to women’s sport. When you abolish truth and reality, as a consequence of wanting everybody to be happy, the whole shebang begins to unravel, the whole confected, deluded edifice.

While I don't particularly like Rod Liddle, on this he is bang on and I hope it makes people actually think.

Everyone growing up under patriarchy has misogynism in them somewhere - I have no doubt that given time my own children will too, despite all the effort I go to trying to counter that.

This is probably going to come out wrong, but I'm going to attempt it anyway... 😬

It goes without saying that assaulting your girlfriend (pregnant or not) is a big no go and obviously marks someone as having misogynism within their psyche - but are we going to negate the views of every single man (or woman even) who says something sensible, based on something they have said or done in the past? It doesn't make sense to me, what about all of the people who have done something equally bad and we just don't know about it? For eg, think of DV reports or how often rape is prosecuted - think how many men are championed based on their outward appearance when something sinister is hiding in their past? At least with RL we know about it and can put comments into context based on an overall perception!

People are very rarely black/white, good/bad. I'm sure even your heroine (whoever that may be) has some sort of comment, view or activity lurking in their past that would make them write-off-able if it were that simple.

Jezebelz · 11/11/2018 12:15

Let's not forget this is the guy who thinks it should NOT be a crime to look at child abuse images online.

www.theguardian.com/society/2003/jan/14/childprotection.rodliddle

I have no interests in the opinion of this odious man.

LurkingLizzy · 11/11/2018 12:18

Jezebelz, you've got a lot to learn about being a member here. No1 rule: hatred of trans people wipes away all sin.

PineappleSunrise · 11/11/2018 12:23

I thought hatred of Rod Liddle wiped away your sin, Lizzy?

Jezebelz · 11/11/2018 12:27

For crying out loud, I know some of us disagree on the trans issue but WTF are people thinking sharing an article from a child abuse apologist on a feminism forum. World's gone mad!

arranfan · 11/11/2018 12:28

I think Liddle was writing about this couple (photograph of the dog):

twitter.com/OrwellNGoode/status/1050769176858640385

I like the Tweeter's comment:

Born too late to explore the earth.

Born too soon to explore the galaxy.

Born just in time to witness this

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 11/11/2018 12:30

People are very rarely black/white, good/bad

This^ this tribal stuff is bullshit. Saying that because Rid Liddle is a bad person, everything he ever says should be disregarded just shows really simplistic thinking.

Things are nuanced and any half-intelligent person who is capable of critical thinking should be able to see this.

IWannaSeeHowItEnds · 11/11/2018 12:33

Agree that people are rarely all good or all bad. Even dislikeable people sometimes have opinions I agree with.
I don't understand how anyone could argue that he's wrong tbh.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 11/11/2018 12:34

There's a really good discussion of Tatchell over here:.

Assume the same goes for Peter Tatchell then?

BeyondVicious · 11/11/2018 12:34

They don't argue that he's wrong, Iwanna, they just list the negative things he has done like that is somehow proof that he is wrong.

rightreckoner · 11/11/2018 12:34

That child abuse article by RL is awful. Really ignorant and wilfully obtuse.

How about you stop being wilfully obtuse on this issue and acknowledge the some of the serious issues with transgender theology ?

IWannaSeeHowItEnds · 11/11/2018 12:37

I'm no great fan of PT either, but if he ever said something that I agreed with, I wouldn't ignore the message on account of it being him who delivered it.
I would still reserve the right not to like the person or think that most of his opinions were wrong.

Jezebelz · 11/11/2018 12:40

rightreckoner if that was directed at me then absolutely. There are certainly some trans activists who have no regard for women's safety, privacy and dignity and they need to be challenged.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 11/11/2018 12:40

Assume the same goes for Peter Tatchell then?

Of course. Just because he appears to be advocating paedophilia, does not mean he hasn't done a lot of good work for the gay community.
