A twitter account called @thewhitepube, run by two intensely irritating very young women, has been targetting a woman called Nina Edge for alleged 'transphobia', which has apparently culminated in her being sacked.

Excuse me WHO is running the @welshstreets account and retweeting bad terf bullshit logic?

I will loudly bang this drum tomorrow when everyone’s awake 😊 @edge_nina @welshstreets pls let me know in the meantime!! Sweet dreams Xxxxx

It appear the Welsh Streets account has become the soapbox for artist @edge_nina (who was recently commissioned to do the winter garden) to spout transphobia, does that represent the view of all involved in the Welsh Streets effort?

I understand why people followed the account in the past (because their housing activism has been good for Liverpool) but I would urge everyone to unfollow in the meantime because you are just putting your trans followers and audiences at arms length in the meantime.

I will take a picture tomorrow and contact the Echo. It will be interesting to see if the mayor has anything to say about this given he was so vocal about the stickers on Crosby beach.

VenusInSpurs · 29/10/2018 17:55

Difranco - is it the massive lettering that says 'The Welsh Streets' on the end of a house?

What have they done to it? And why? Because if it is that, Nine E wasn't the artist, was she?

Sad Angry

Difranco123 · 29/10/2018 18:08

Yes, that’s the one. They’ve scrawled “supports trans rights” in black paint. I’m not aware who the artist is, but Nina has links to the Welsh streets so assume that’s why they’ve targeted here.

RiverTam · 29/10/2018 18:20

Wow. Well, if they get caught for that the real world is going to slap them in the face and no mistake, and good, I hope they’re sent reeling.

SunsetBeetch · 29/10/2018 19:15

Hi just seen this retweeted by someone I follow re the mural.

"Not sure the mural was actually done by her but she’s well known for having over a decade of campaigning to save The Welsh Streets area - and given the timing, it can’t be a coincidence."

"Apparently the mural is by the v talented Paul Curtis, commissioned by Place First. If Nina had done it, I’m sure there’d be more than two women and more than one black person included in the b&w portraits!"

I can’t believe anyone would be so stupid and morally bankrupt as to do that. So sad.

Rabbit62 · 29/10/2018 20:51

I watch the incidents like this from a slight distance - I have now retired. But I think the incidents show very very clearly the concerns that women (as in adult humans) have about trans women are very very real. There is real violence. There is harassment. There is something to be frightened of. Trans women appear to be carrying their male aggression with them. A sort of own goal. Women can be clearly seen to need their own spaces that do not include trans women - or how can they be safe?

VenusInSpurs · 30/10/2018 08:47

Rabbit: not all Transwomen, but certain TRAs.

Disgusted by the vandalism to The Welsh Streets. Complete lack of respect for a community in an area of total deprivation who worked so hard. No one else’s rights or concerns matter then?
“Support trans rights “ is a reasonable enough message. I am all for supporting everyone’s rights to be free from abuse, harassment, discrimination.... but it is not reasonable to destroy a community’s mural to make your point.

Projection would have been much better. It does no harm Wink

silkpyjamasallday

I have followed The White Pube for a while (I am no longer after this debacle), and I was quite shocked to see their Instagram stories inciting hatred against Nina, who from what I could see had not said anything remotely hateful.

Instagram stories are designed to disappear after a short time. A function easily exploited by people running a smear campaign :/

Did you get any screenshots? They might be useful if Edge pursues legal action, which she really should.

LiverpoolReSisters · 30/10/2018 10:20

So far, a complete lack of condemnation from Liverpool Councillors for this behaviour.

And in fact, support for the grafitti from a councillor....

TigerDrankAllTheWaterInTheTap · 30/10/2018 11:52

What! Shock [anger]

littlbrowndog · 30/10/2018 11:58

Jeez what an idiot he is - below from Paul Kenyon

Honestly, a bit of graffiti is annoying, although it's easily removed. Are you asking me to compare the positive message behind this graffiti against the hate fuelled message from yours stickers? You should re-read the minutes of last council. I think we, as a city, were clear.

SunsetBeetch · 30/10/2018 12:03

Screenshots of the White Pube's instagram, where they condone the graffiti

I find it quite remarkable that a councillor can presume to talk on behalf of a whole city and say that acknowledging biology is not wanted in Liverpool.

SunsetBeetch · 30/10/2018 13:39

Screenshot in case Paul Kenyon deletes. He probably won't though, he appears to have no shame in his misogyny.

Some more from The White Pube's Instagram, in case they do have a clear out.. I wonder what the wider art world thinks of their behaviour?

The remark from the councillor is not only irresponsible, but will embolden vandals.

If you cannot condemn acts of criminal damage for whatever reason and if you shrug your shoulders and say 'what's the fuss?', then your moral compass needs fixing.

How much damage needs to happen before the councillor thinks it's wrong and criminal?

RiverTam · 30/10/2018 14:12

one of those nasty pieces of work has commented on the Artists Against Transphobia page on FB and my heart started pounding as soon as I saw her name. She is such a spiteful, nasty little cunt, and I don't use that word at all but if I'm going to it'll be about shits like her.

VenusInSpurs · 30/10/2018 14:14

Shows how much respect the Councillor has for the people of the Welsh Streets!

LOL - Nina Edge gets reported for an opinion which differs from TRAs, a Councillor tweets an opinion which trashes the work and pride of a whole community....I wonder if any of those residents will report him to his party?

A Labour politician, shrugging off the defacing of an artwork at the gateway to a disadvantages, working class community.

His moral compass is defunct.

theOtherPamAyres · 30/10/2018 15:56

The Welsh Street vandalism, and the vandalism that occurred at the Egyptian House in Plymouth before a WPUK meeting, are significant marker posts. It takes the 'clashes' to another level when buildings and communities come under fire because of their association with gender sceptics.

When the reaction from MPs and councillors is 'meh, nothing to see here' - and when the likes of the BBC claim that both sides are involved in 'clashes' - then TRAs are indulged, their transgression and criminal activities ignored.

It's about time that transactivism - the silencing, intimidation, false reports to the police, false reports to employers, the damage, the assaults, bomb threats etc - was taken seriously and holistically.

arranfan · 30/10/2018 16:03

TRAs are indulged, their transgression and criminal activities ignored.

It feels very like, "Boys will be boys" accompanied by an indulgent smile and eye-roll. The more so if they're privileged vandals (shades of Bullingdon or the notorious scions of celebrities). If they're privileged, more-oppressed-than-thou, boys then the reasons for indulgence just seem to reduce the vandalism, smoke flares etc. to no more than youthful high jinks.

I can't shake off the feeling that young people with verified backgrounds of socio-economic deprivation were jailed for lesser offences during the riots of 2011.

Annandale · 30/10/2018 16:29

It seems quite likely that Nina Edge has just left, for her own reasons or normal employment reasons, and the commenters have claimed this as a 'victory' for their own reasons.

To say 'noone goes to LJMU expecting to run across a terf' seems quite carefully worded, given that they apparently aren't at LJMU. Are they presenting this as some sort of art project of their own?

I do sometimes feel there should be a name for this type of art, along the lines of 'outsider art'. 'Tiresome Art' perhaps?

The Education Editor of the Times has tweeted that Nina Edge is alive and teaching at LJMU and has the University's full support.
