M&S launches porn star martini in a can

Keeping it classy, M&S.

Anyone use the M&S live chat successfully? I've waited to live chat and before anyone answered they ended the chat saying it's not available.

GrinGrinGrin typical feminism thread - name calling like school children.

Time to work out how to get feminism threads off my Active posts!

hellojim · 24/10/2018 14:22

I also think this is a complete non issue and another boring thread about nothing relevant. It’s a drink aimed at adults. If your little darlings will see the word pornstar and know what it means then that is perhaps your issue, not M&S’s.
Well you still felt compelled to read it and comment,MaryBoBerry

Do you have children? If so surely you realise that it's hard enough dealing with the topics of conversation children hear on the playground without having a high street shop adding to their vocabulary. If I sent my little darlings into Ann Summers I would expect them to be subjected to this level of language and more, but popping into Marks I wouldn't expect it.

Notacluewhatthisis · 24/10/2018 14:29

Wow....see the term 'cool' being thrown about again.

Ok you do realise that most adult women don't give a shit about appearing cool. It's doesn't enter their heads. And yet, time and time again, when people don't agree with an OP in the feminism boards it's thrown round in a derogatory fashion.

People have different opinions. Fuck all to do with wanting to appear 'cool'. Cool is concept used by some some to try and shout down other women.

OlennasWimple · 24/10/2018 14:30

A friend has persevered with the M&S chat function and got this response:

"We, ourselves haven't named this drink, it is already a very popular cocktail and we've had a lot of contact from customers asking for us to stock it. At the moment, we have no plans to remove this particular product. However, I do appreciate your feedback and will be happy to pass on your comments to our teams behind this drink."

Which sounds like a prepared answer

Would a rose by any other name smell so sweet? Would a cocktail with a non-rape culture name taste so good? How could we ever find out?

rightreckoner · 24/10/2018 14:37

Also I don't know what's in a Porn Star Martini (or didn't, until I read this thread). I would never order one in a bar partly out of distaste for the name and partly through not knowing what it is. A Passion Fruit Martini on the other hand sounds delicious and I know exactly what it is. So actually they've chosen the name that would inhibit me and some other consumers from buying it whereas the point is surely to sell as much as possible.

Negroni, by the way, is named after the Italian family that founded the company so not at all the same thing.

RudeZebra · 24/10/2018 14:38

I'm with Sir vix, I'm puzzled by the pile on. Shows how much some women hate feminism. Couldn't even just pass by with an eye roll.

Could any regular FWR poster have passed a trans thread with any non GC views on it with just an "eye roll?"
You (FWR, not you specifically) dragged your hate the fucking trans stuff all over every mumsnet board, linking to this board as some sort of fountain of knowledge, and now you're surprised people come here with a different opinion?

Feminism isn't special. People are entitled to challenge what they consider bollocks

Dragon3 · 24/10/2018 14:38

If your little darlings will see the word pornstar and know what it means then that is perhaps your issue, not M&S’s.

You think it's overprotective to keep kids away from references to porn? Really?

rightreckoner · 24/10/2018 14:41

I think people are quite challenged by how damaging this culture is and how much we have colluded in it.

VerbeenaBeeks · 24/10/2018 14:41

I'm not seeing a pile on? I'm seeing more people with differing opinions for once instead of all the same. Makes a refreshing change.

Jaxtellerswife · 24/10/2018 14:41

If they are that little they won't be able to read it.
As pp said, maybe steer clear of the booze aisle

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 24/10/2018 14:41

M&S obfuscating the issue with “we’ll pass it on” - no thanks, how I do I know who to and that the message will be relayed as intended?

Fuck you M&S for denying anyone who a problem with your gross named cocktail a means by which to actually complain

Fuck their chat

BitOutOfPractice · 24/10/2018 14:45

They do say that about any complaint!

SuperstarDJ · 24/10/2018 14:45

Paul it’s not M&S’s gross named cocktail - it’s the name of the drink which they didn’t invent. Have you complained to Tesco et al, and every bar and off-licence that also sells it?

Ginazon · 24/10/2018 14:46

Just adding my voice in support, I don't have much to add to those who have already explained the problem.

Though I am worried by the extent of normalisation of porn already, when the first few responses clearly don't see the difference between 'sex on the beach etc.', and 'pornstar'. I am one of the last generation to grow up with boys who didn't have such ready access to porn, and I am fucking worried about the chances of my dds finding boyfriends/partners who haven't been damaged by it.

ErrolTheDragon · 24/10/2018 14:46

Would a rose by any other name smell so sweet? Would a cocktail with a non-rape culture name taste so good? How could we ever find out?

Set up a tasting trial (hey, the things we do for science...). Not quite sure what the ideal protocol would be as I don't think you can 'blind' a test in which the only difference is what you're calling it.

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 24/10/2018 14:48

Not yet @SuperstarDJ but as explained 200,000 posts ago as demonstrated by other retailers the alternative name is “Passion Fruit Martini”

So I’d like to know why they chose to put “Porn” in the title like it’s the most normal thing ever?

ErrolTheDragon · 24/10/2018 14:53

Tesco appears to sell this, not 'porn star' (or any other 'sexy' names I could spot.).

www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/products/301744673

Bars and offies are a different matter to supermarket shelves.

VerbeenaBeeks · 24/10/2018 14:54

SuperstarDJ - that's my take too - it's not their drink, it's a well established cocktail in other shops too. Bit strange to just target m and s for a name change.

Ifonlyus · 24/10/2018 15:08

Which other supermarkets sell it with this name?

No-one is objecting to bars selling it, we're objecting to a multi-generational retailer selling it. Why can't you see the difference?

ErrolTheDragon · 24/10/2018 15:10

If you google, there are plenty of references to 'passion fruit martini' too.

OlennasWimple · 24/10/2018 15:10

Errol - I'll take one for the team and be part of the blind tasting....?

hipsterfun · 24/10/2018 15:11

You (FWR, not you specifically) dragged your hate the fucking trans stuff all over every mumsnet board

I’d say that’s an accurate assessment you’ve made there Hmm

pennydrew · 24/10/2018 15:14

Time to work out how to get feminism threads off my Active posts!

You could try not commenting on them.

pennydrew · 24/10/2018 15:16

*VerbeenaBeeks

I'm not seeing a pile on?

Of course you’re not. The woman who got upset at being told she was being ridiculous doesn’t think loads of people telling the OP to ‘get out more’ or choose a different ‘hill to die on’ etc is a pile on. Why am I not surprised.

Glitched · 24/10/2018 15:16

Porn is not illegal.
Using the word porn is not banned.

Thankfully.
