TG day of remembrance

When did 20 November become the transgender Day Of Remembrance?

Is there an International Women's Day of Remembrance? We bloody well need to get onto it given the numbers of us who are actually killed every single day. And given that the majority of women who are murdered are killed by men, that's anti-women (adult human female, to be clear - and that's not exclusionary, trans women don't want to be included anyway, they've made their own day they can't now complain about not being in ours).

And I do hope that they'll be remembering the trans people killed by other trans people. Because there are a fair few of them too.

The real danger with the distortion of information is that young transgender people, and their parents, believe that they are particularly vulnerable to assaults from random strangers who want to kill them.

This is not only irresponsible but an unneccesary burden on young people's mental health. The fear of crime is pernicious.

BettyDuMonde · 24/10/2018 10:46

I noted one person saying there hadn't been any transgender women killed in the UK this year - can I remind everyone of the death of Naome Hersi a transgender women drugged, raped and murdered in London.
I think this thread is a very bad reflection on MN.

Actually, the poster you mention said there hadn’t been any UK murders of transpeople in 2017 (which is correct) and that they didn’t know if there had been any in 2018.

To which I replied with Naomi Hersi’s name.

On page 2.

So your assertion that this thread ‘reflects badly on Mumsnet’ is based on your reimagining of reality, rather than what actually happened.

IKeepFlouncing · 24/10/2018 11:15

My first deletion mesg.

Obviously slipped my mind I have to tip toe around TRAs on a site where many women gather to discuss all relevant things that happen in daily life, D.V, rape, E.A, mental health, loss of babies, children, family members, disabilities end list.

This is why I will never ever post any personal nor seek any advice when I have had no where else to turn like I have done many times over the years.

Also as much as I have liked to comment my experiences of shit life dealt me with other posters who seek advice in hope they see some sort of positiveness or know there are people who can show compassion & comfort when life fucking sucks at times. I won’t.

Yeah no great intellectual lost by me not posting on those threads but sometimes just knowing someone gives a fuck that matters the most.

Because I refuse to have to bow down and tip toe around the TRAs that are allowed to fucking preach all over the boards.

Most ironic thing is that try join there forums and u need birth certificate, utility bill and full DNA test (ok last one exaggerated) yet, it’s easier to identify as opposite sex.

IKeepFlouncing · 24/10/2018 11:21

Not really got money to splash out on new hoodie but I will juggle things around to buy on whilst Remembering what it means rather than new item of clothing for me.

Anyone know what sizes are like?

Trousered · 24/10/2018 11:23

Yes, the thought police are back.

ResistanceIsNecessary · 24/10/2018 12:00

Flouncing I've read comments saying they run quite snug, so if you like a loose fit then size up.

NopeNi · 24/10/2018 13:24

The deletions on this thread are bizarre.

Including one factual one by LangCleng about statistics - what's that about?

pennydrew · 24/10/2018 13:33

Including one factual one by LangCleng about statistics - what's that about?

I know. Fucking bizarre. I had one deleted that just said we have the police to investigate crimes and figure out their cause ( instead of guessing ) I’ve asked MNHQ to explain.

LangCleg · 24/10/2018 13:45

Including one factual one by LangCleng about statistics - what's that about?

Nah. My deleted one was a snide add-on to my stats one. I'll own it.

JillyArmeeen · 24/10/2018 13:55

Does anyone know how many trans people have died from complications of surgery or their Hormone medications?
Or when they are remembered?
According to the minutes taken at the 'we're still here' conference, a trans person there was claiming they knew three people who had died from taking hormones.
Either that's true, in which case where are the stats, who are these people and when are they remembered? If true it would make trans people in this country at a much higher risk from hormones than from murder.
Or its not true. Hmmm

Tshirts come small, hoodie not sure but they are advertised as unisex so might be bigger.

ResistanceIsNecessary · 24/10/2018 14:04

I wonder if hormone deaths may have occurred from self-prescribed use. I know that some transwomen have previously discussed buying hormones online because they can't (or won't) go through the GIRES assessment process.

IKeepFlouncing · 24/10/2018 15:22

Resistance thanks I found thread and order placed 😁

DD said get me bag as early Xmas present next week. (easily pleased), especially as I always carry extra bag as reliant on public transport & I just gave mum my handy shopping bag.

I’d like to get my mum one (we call her bag lady she obsessed with bags always) I know she will be eyeing up mine when get it.

Fucking sad that I can’t get mum one given she back to using TFGL daily but still wobbly on feet after recovering from life threatening illness, I be to scared for her.

Remembering the 40plus years working for NHS all the fucking abuse sometimes she’s put up with, and still wants to return once well enough even though I’ve begged her not too and can’t carry a fucking woman bag because of arse wipes of today.

Yes let’s start a thread on remembering all the women in our lives.

Bespin · 24/10/2018 19:02

I continue to be amazed at how poeple can tell us what we think our day is for or what it is used for. should we just get people to come on here and tell them what it means to them. there is one website that collects the figures but that does not dictate what we remember on that day have any of you been to our vidyles at all. in my time I have attended ones for Lucy meddows took her life after being hounded by the press for dearing to be a teacher. leelah alcorn who killed herself because her parents took her for conversion therapy and would have died anonymously unless she had set a note to be published after her death and finally Vicki thomlinson who died after being placed in a male prison and who we tried to help but we were unable to reach in time and could only comfort her family afterwards.

but please keep on telling us what our day of remembrance is for.

pennydrew · 24/10/2018 19:06

You’re not a representative. We are responding to prominent trans activists and to material in media. You personally as an individual might have your own meanings, but it’s not what the day is officially for. It’s specifically homicide.

pennydrew · 24/10/2018 19:09

*The Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) was started in 1999 by transgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith as a vigil to honor the memory of Rita Hester, a transgender woman who was killed in 1998. The vigil commemorated all the transgender people lost to violence since Rita Hester's death, and began an important tradition that has become the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance

QuietContraryMary · 24/10/2018 19:10

"finally Vicki thomlinson who died after being placed in a male prison and who we tried to help but we were unable to reach in time and could only comfort her family afterwards."

She must have been very close to you.

"Vikki Thompson, 21, from Keighley, was found dead in her cell at HMP Leeds in 2015 with a ligature around her neck.

The jury at the two-week inquest in Wakefield concluded it was right she was held in a male jail and that she did not intend to take her own life."

pennydrew · 24/10/2018 19:10

March 31st is the annual Transgender Day of Visibility.

OrchidInTheSun · 24/10/2018 19:13

Remember whoever you like Bespin. The question is whether U.K. councils should debate funds to marking a day which impacts on very few people here when there are lots of their groups who are much more at risk of murder (which is the point of the day).

pennydrew · 24/10/2018 19:13

And The International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia is May 17

Bespin · 24/10/2018 19:14

no it is not one website started to highlight that around the world this was an issue and then local groups around the world took it on and it means that in different places in the world this means different things on a local level to the people who. attend or recognise the people who have died simply for being trans, speak to the people who actually attend any of the events we do to remember there lives the reading of thst list is usually a main thing but also talking about others we have known and lost along the way.

pennydrew · 24/10/2018 19:16

I can’t understand a word you said. Wtf

Bespin · 24/10/2018 19:17

oh do please tell me why you think she had a liguture around her neck and how that was supposed to end. the vidyle was for the bloody inquest and the findings that placing a vunrable young woman in a sutuation that was only going to make her more vulnerable was going to end in a good way.

QuietContraryMary · 24/10/2018 19:22

I was referring to the fact you called her Thomlinson, when her name was Thompson.
