Emma Watson is virtue signaling and let’s face it, her privilege protects her.
Angry

ToeToToe · 18/10/2018 10:27

She's being nice and inclusive, like every good feminist should be. Hmm

jellyfrizz · 18/10/2018 10:28

I've got no problem with trans rights being human rights. Women's rights are human rights too.

If trans people have the right to define themselves so should women.

Any other stance would ruin her transatlantic market value, too. Not saying she is no true believer, but if she were GC, she still would not be caught dead in a FPFW shirt, for obvious reasons.

charlestonchaplin · 18/10/2018 10:32

I'm not anti-trans rights. I'm just not in favour of trans rights that curtail women's rights.

She may have been @ing Mermaids because Mermaids have not stopped @ing her on the issue.

Destinysdaughter · 18/10/2018 10:34

Don’t think that worked!

Oops - sorry, wrong thread!

ToeToToe · 18/10/2018 10:36

Getting confused with Justine tweeting the Guardian article there - different thread Confused

NoSquirrels · 18/10/2018 10:39

Meh. Trans rights are human rights. Women’s rights are human rights. They’re not the same thing, however.

It is a shame because she is influential for a generation or two of girls and women, and virtue signalling is really annoying. But hopefully she’ll engage some critical thinking skills at some point....

Batteriesallgone · 18/10/2018 10:41

We live in hope that tomorrow it will be female rights are human rights

AbsintheFriends · 18/10/2018 10:46

First reaction was irritation and disappointment. On reflection, the statement isn't actually controversial. I wonder if she could be appeasing? Saying something bland to protect herself against the baying mob.

Of course, even if that's true it's just as bad as wearing a t-shirt saying 'trans rights are women's rights'. Because if you're not part of the solution you're part of the problem.

pennydrew · 18/10/2018 10:46

Oh god, she @ mermaids? 🙄 I bet she has no idea what kind of organisation it is.

AbsintheFriends · 18/10/2018 10:48

Ah - I didn't see that she'd also @'d Mermaids. Ok - no defence. She's woefully ignorant.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 18/10/2018 10:51

She will think it's a lovely sparkly organisation that helps sad children.

AnyFucker · 18/10/2018 10:51

Good girl, Emma < pats head >

Avegemitesandwich · 18/10/2018 10:53

I would love to get Emma on here for a webchat and see her justify that. See her have a good debate with the posters on here.

What 'human rights' does she believe trans people don't have.

DereksSexyPyjamas · 18/10/2018 10:56

Er... what? Isn't 'trans rights are human rights' a gender critical viewpoint? I don't think she's terribly well-informed.

FoxyLaRoxy · 18/10/2018 11:02

Emma’s going to look very foolish when the shit hits the fan over Mermaids.

SweetheartNeckline · 18/10/2018 11:07

Trans rights are human rights and rightly so.

I'm confused as to what rights (not wants or courtesies) trans people don't currently have.

I'm also confused as to how allowing self ID is going to prevent transphobic attacks from violent, usually homophobic, males, who I'm fairly sure most actual transphobia comes from.

LorettasBox · 18/10/2018 11:09

Bless.

Ekphrasis · 18/10/2018 11:10

I bet it's because she watched butterfly.
