Jen, I've got no problem with the ad taken at face value, I said so up thread

if it had run a year ago or next month i'd have nodded, gone 'quite right' and that would be that

but the context is that it's an answer to the FPFW ad last week, and directs people to stonewall's website, the entire front page of which is dedicated to getting people to submit a pro self ID consultation response.

it looks like Tesco's are backing stonewall against FPFW

If Tesco really don't care about the rights of women and girls i'd like to know that so they can never have any of my money ever again

if Tesco were misled about the context of the ad i'd like them to know that so they can rethink the trust they place in stonewall

the above: nuanced

KataraJean · 18/10/2018 07:03

Yes, I want to know too. I think the companies want to support trans people (good) but I do not think they are aware of the context and the conflict of rights with women, and the problems with what is being peddled to children.

I'm happy to take it as pretty much a boycott list - certainly if they didn't know then, they do know now. Inexcusable.

Rumbledore · 18/10/2018 07:11

Does this mean the protest scheduled for Friday against Metro has been cancelled? Shame.

Melanippe · 18/10/2018 08:08

Hi Bespin. Did you get the screenshots for Twitter you wanted or were you disappointed?

CuriousaboutSamphire · 18/10/2018 08:20

That GCHQ tweet is a long standing thing. The secret service used to publish puzzles in newspapers, incognito of course. The winners were then targetted and, if found to be good chaps or chappesses, may have been invited to join up.

They are part of the long history of GCHQ and may still use those puzzles in a similar manner today!

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 18/10/2018 08:26

yes, I can't object to the GCHQ puzzle - I enjoyed it!

I can (and have) object to them apparently taking a side in an in progress government consultation

I mean what were they thinking? I thought GCHQ was where the smart people work?

TimeLady · 18/10/2018 08:27

Maybe the Ocado Twitter operative works under cover at GCHQ?

Dragon3 · 18/10/2018 08:50

Jen Stonewall has done so many good things over the years that criticism does seem jarring.

But the bottom line is that sex self ID is simply too dangerous for women and girls. They know the arguments and are still pursuing an anti-safeguarding path.

Stonewall's credibility has been damaged. Which is likely to harm LGB people in the long term. T people too.

The ad itself (fine) and what it links to (not fine) are two different things.

Ereshkigal · 18/10/2018 08:57

Anyone seen the Metro hosting this jaw-droppingly awful and stupid article by a PN writer yesterday?

twitter.com/AimeePaige/status/1052534056536207360?s=20

Ereshkigal · 18/10/2018 08:58

'With a no. of TERFs identifying as lesbians, it’s imperative we counter their anti-trans arguments by responding to the Gender Recognition Act consultation.'

TimeLady · 18/10/2018 09:02

Link to Metro article

metro.co.uk/2018/10/17/cis-lesbians-must-support-our-trans-friends-right-to-self-identify-8043283/

The comments are interesting though - she's been handed her arse on a plate.

littlbrowndog · 18/10/2018 09:05

It's annoying that companies are endorsing Stonewall's views on the GRA consultation (although it does provide a useful boycott list) but I am fucking livid about government bodies doing the same.

If I were the Russian government, the next time it was implicated in an assassination attempt/cyberhacking scandal my response would be 'what the hell does the west know about truth, the British intelligence service even believes that humans can change sex'.

Makes us as a country look completely stupid. I'm starting to think that government bodies and state organisations should be banned from twitter because one person being given the power to (mis)represent a group is so irresponsible. And the fact that that one person (in the GCHQ instance) might have the means to easily intercept my emails, phonecalls etc is horrifying. Which is why MN and the police should have absolutely thrown the book at Emma Healey

RedToothBrush · 18/10/2018 09:21

From metro article above:
With a significant number of these TERFs identifying as lesbians

Terfs are not women or human. Nor are they normal lesbians.

Could she load the language anymore?

CaptainKirkssparetupee · 18/10/2018 09:22

I can't see the comments.

RedToothBrush · 18/10/2018 09:26

Oh and you can identify as lesbian. So presumably you can identify out of being a lesbian too.

Ereshkigal · 18/10/2018 09:28

Captain

If you click as if you want to make a comment yourself they will appear.

Datun · 18/10/2018 09:35

I'm wondering if they just hand it over to somebody a little younger, who they think will be far more au fait with all the different social media aspects. Someone who gets it as they've been brought up with it.

And the converse being that perhaps the older people don't think it's important, or relevant?

CaptainKirkssparetupee · 18/10/2018 09:35

Nope can't see 'em

CaptainKirkssparetupee · 18/10/2018 09:39

Anyway the average person isn't going to have a clue what that article is on about are they, was it not proof read or does she expect everyone to know what all these terms mean?

Ereshkigal · 18/10/2018 09:40

Agree. I doubt Metro readers will be particularly impressed.
