Opening sequence got pretty much all the stereotypes in...

OP posts:
Moanella · 14/10/2018 21:37

Just the acting alone is fucking appalling.

IAmNotInvisible · 14/10/2018 21:37

How many kids are going to watch this and start thinking they are trans? Girls that don't like pink and glitter, for instance?

To be honest I think most will think it's drivel. I don't think many will relate to it at all.

NotTerfNorCis · 14/10/2018 21:37

The dad will eventually learn to say 'I'd rather have a living daughter than a dead son'.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 14/10/2018 21:37

This is horrendous.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 14/10/2018 21:37

And dad wallops him when he's wearing a skirt and dancing. No reason at all this wee boy might think he's a girl - none at all

OP posts:
MrsToddsShortcut · 14/10/2018 21:38

Dad wants to 'keep his son'. Apart from being manipulative, this is also quite dull.

Wow. Nice but of child abuse there, based on a kid in a pink jumper.

Trinity1976 · 14/10/2018 21:39

If it's as bad as you all say, hopefully it will be a big own goal for Mermaids.

MrsToddsShortcut · 14/10/2018 21:39

Exactly. If I'm a boy and I'm wrong (to the point of being beaten) for liking 'girl stuff', maybe I am a girl. Then Dad will stop hitting me.

NotTerfNorCis · 14/10/2018 21:41

If it's as bad as you all say

There's a lot of positive feedback on the #butterfly tag on Twitter though.

IAmNotInvisible · 14/10/2018 21:42

Dad - "I gotta be there for him?"

Er yes. He's your child. You're supposed to be there for your children. It's in the dad job description.

Excellent and innovating script writing.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 14/10/2018 21:42

The grandad has got it right!

OP posts:
Moanella · 14/10/2018 21:42

Grandad the voice of reason so far.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 14/10/2018 21:43

What is with these kids asking about the sex lives of their parents - do they have no boundaries!

OP posts:
ToeToToe · 14/10/2018 21:43

The script is awful, it's like Susie Green's TED Talk written as a third rate drama.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 14/10/2018 21:45

I'm really hoping that at least some papers review it and rip it to shreds - it deserves it!

OP posts:
FishFingerPie · 14/10/2018 21:46

I agree - aside from all the stereotypes and cliches - it's just awful - not sure I'll make it to episode 3. Don't get all the rave reviews - it's a third rate Sunday night drams.

Jodie777 · 14/10/2018 21:47

The acting is horrendous (as expected), shocking to see the boy say he felt better after slashing his wrist.

Barracker · 14/10/2018 21:47

Acting is as wooden as Friel's stiff upper lip

derxa · 14/10/2018 21:47

Watching in horror

PlantsArePeopleToo · 14/10/2018 21:48

I'm not watching this but surely it can't all just be stereotypes? There's got to be more to it? Someone please tell me there is .

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 14/10/2018 21:49

I can't believe that the TRAs think this is good:

Boy likes sparkles / pink
Father beats boy for liking sparkles / pink
Mother wanted a girl not another boy
Parents going through a divorce
Self-harming isolated 11 year old.
Boy hates his penis

Why the fuck would anyones immediate thought be that the boy is actually a girl, why the fuck would a GP suggest puberty blockers.

I'd be on the phone to social services and getting that poor kid some counselling.

IAmNotInvisible · 14/10/2018 21:49

If it's as bad as you all say, hopefully it will be a big own goal for Mermaids.

I think it's bad because they've so far it's really coming across as just a stale lightweight drama about an 11 year old boy who desperately wants his parents to get back together.

The trans issue seems secondary and only there to give it a current twist which meant the media would be interested in talking about it.

MrsToddsShortcut · 14/10/2018 21:50

Aaaand poor Jazz Jennings.

PerverseConverse · 14/10/2018 21:50

Pink was originally a boy's colour as it was seen as stronger than blue. Apparently. It changed somewhere along the line.

Not watching as would probably need blood pressure medication or Valium to do so, but reading with interest.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 14/10/2018 21:50

Aaaand now we have child watching Jazz Jennings and realising his true self.

Or

Should we add that to the thing TRAs don't want to point out list?
