Opening sequence got pretty much all the stereotypes in...

I deliberately didn't watch. Maybe more should do the same. After reading about it on here I'm glad I didn't! Sounds completely batshit and dysfunctional to me.

I think it will have a detrimental effect on some vulnerable children either directly through their watching or by influencing the adults around them.

The way the self harm was portrayed as a solution eg stopped Mum going on a date, made the child feel better and led to Dad coming home is really concerning.

Good on Hadley Freeman for the Twitter thread she started.

Drama has been showing Eastenders from the start. There was a brilliant scene in an episode yesterday with a young Sharon and a drag queen while he was in the living room at the Vic getting ready. They were talking about how easy it was for him to put the woman mask on and take it off again.................amongst other things, this episode is from early 1986.

ToeToToe · 16/10/2018 01:20

Helena, I really remember that! I must have been early teens - and I loved Eastenders so much.

MawkishTwaddle · 16/10/2018 01:42

Produced by Nicola Shindler's Red Productions.

Used to be interesting, now makes 'Woke of Week' virtue signalling shite, IMO.

HelenaDove · 16/10/2018 01:45

I posted about it because that scene..................which was only a few mins long was a bloody sight more insightful than an hour of Butterfly................Sharon said that she hated being a woman sometimes but had no choice. And this was the mid 80s Are we going backwards?

HelenaDove · 17/10/2018 00:06

Ive watched the whole thing now. It was repeated tonight. The father is a terrible homophobe.

I liked the grandfather.

catchyjem · 17/10/2018 14:22

It just highlighted for me just how damaging gender stereotypes have become. The whole family of that poor boy are horrible. The Dad is clearly homophobic. The Grandad has a fair point saying maybe he's just gay but also it shouldn't need to come down to that. Why should it be a choice between being a girl or being gay? Why can't straight boys enjoy pink, sparkles, dancing, dresses or whatever the hell they like? No wonder boys are confused and frustrated and think they have to "be" a girl in order to like "girl" stuff. Schools have a lot to answer for too. Why should only girls be allowed stud earrings?

HelenaDove · 17/10/2018 14:58

Nothing wrong with straight lads liking pink In the 80s Eastenders Nick Berry was wearing a pink scarf.

WTF happened between then and now.

LorettasBox · 17/10/2018 15:02

Yes, while I thoroughly appreciate the well meant comments that a boy like this could just be gay, and that would be ok, he could also just be a heterosexual who likes feminine accoutrements.

It's actually playing into the hands of homophobes and AWAs to suggest that choice is a binary (ha ha) between girl or gay.

Courtsey of Politiwoops: All deleted tweets from MPs

Angela Crawley (scottish-national-party) tweeted :
Haven’t managed to catch #Butterfly on @ITV but judging by the positive comments from cross-section & support from #LGBT & #Trans community - I thought it would definitely be worth sharing the brilliant @Mermaids_Gender & the invaluable work they do supporting families

What an interesting deletion.

I wonder what motivated it.

Most odd.

Moanella · 21/10/2018 21:04

Who's enduring a second helping of this drivel?

Bunnybigears · 21/10/2018 21:33

I am. You would think they would have warned the Grandma!

PerverseConverse · 21/10/2018 21:41

I can't bear to add myself to the viewing figures and I think I might have a stroke due to a sharp rise in blood pressure.

LanaorAna2 · 21/10/2018 22:21

I'm giggling madly, if somewhat inappropriately. Made up cobblers.

Mum and Dad split up! ages ago! I know, I'll get them together by wearing a tutu.

These poor children, child soldiers of the Gender War. Who will take the responsibility for sending them into battle?

MrsChollySawcutt · 22/10/2018 22:02

Just watching part 2 now. It's actually making me really angry. Just got to the bit where she's dragging the child to USA to buy puberty blockers. Words fail me who would do that?

I think the NHS clinic worker had it spot on when they recommended therapy for the whole family and identified them as a 'family in crisis'.

CEO of Mermaids, wasn't it?

Cagliostro · 22/10/2018 22:08

I think I’m going to watch on catch up, I have hypotension and could do with raising my blood pressure :o

AspieAndProud · 22/10/2018 23:34

Butterfly can fuck off. Doctor Who had Rosa Parks in it.

Stunning and brave, genuinely, in a time and place when standing up for your rights was extremely dangerous.

Someone with Munchausen's by Proxy? (Or as it would now be known, Factitious or Induced Illness [including psychological disorder] by Proxy.) Convincing a child that they need drugs or surgery, whilst seeking / accepting 'hero status' for either the child or the adult, might suggest this, as well as the almost epidemiological pattern in western society of 'trans children'.

Rebecca36 · 23/10/2018 11:35

I've just watched the second episode. Honestly don't know what to think, it's not comfortable viewing. I don't like the dad, he gives me the creeps.

The poor child (Max/Maxine) has so many adults around giving input, each with own agenda.

I don't know what I would be like as a mother of a child like that one but I think - hope - I would just support, stand back and not make a big deal out of it all because my child might change their mind! I mean, honestly, puberty blockers. That's abuse. Poor kid. However the mother doesn't know what to do for the best, she's trying hard.

Very confusing programme though quite well acted. A very fashionable topic.

SmallButFierce · 23/10/2018 12:14

I’ve just watched this on catch up and agree that it is basically a load of claptrap but a few things really stood out to me:

-It’s a VERY emotionally manipulative programme. As well as being very unbalanced.

-Big push for puberty blockers - without any particular consideration of the (massive) problems associated with their use.

-Big promo for Mermaids - it’s basically the story of SG’s child isn’t it? And seemed to be aimed at validating it all.

-There is a really anti male vibe to the programme - with the dreadful husband, bully boys at school, plus more subtle stuff like the boring boys’ clothes and restrictive activities (football whether you like it or not).

-I also found the part where they saw the NHS specialists disturbing as the narrative seemed to be that they were totally wrong.

-The age of the child I also found a bit off - the feminine clothes, toys, accessories etc all seemed more suited to a much younger child.

-The scene where Max was putting on the girls’ uniform I found a bit much - fetishising even.

Also, the trans man sitting next to AF in the Mermaids meeting, who was that? Definitely seen that person before either on TV or in the papers.

I would actually be interested in watching a balanced documentary about trans identifying children - has this been done at all?
