Looks like it will come up later in the programme.

Ffs am gonna stomp of to my bed in a fizzing fucking temper after that total sit wankery

Volant · 10/10/2018 23:22

What on earth is the logic behind the statement that the term excludes women of colour?

pombear · 10/10/2018 23:22

Seriously?

If anything they should have had a 'woman of colour' (as described by Wellcome) on seeing as they were women who were shoved in the same category of men who feel like they're women, according to Wellcome's original explanation.

Even if they can't recognise misogyny at play, why is this overt racism ignored by the BBC and Newsnight?

howard97A · 10/10/2018 23:22

I suspect they thought about having a woman to discuss the issue, and decided against it because she might have let slip the awful truth
that transwomen ...

WTFisawomxn · 10/10/2018 23:23

I sniff an orchestrated strategy in all this.

I'd never seen the spelling womxn until it was a sudden bombardment, and now I see Trans Media Watch publicly distancing themselves from it as though it's an actual thing.

It's just a publicity stunt to claw back some credibility after the ridiculous billboard situation with Posie imo.

Yes, I suspect something similar. This all seems very much a way to get back at the "wrong kind" of feminists.
Did the BBC cover the billboard on TV?

Hulo · 10/10/2018 23:23

What, women doesn't include women of colour (and nor does womyn)? So what have I been all these years? I mean...I just can't...no.....

How dare two middle class white men discuss anything about women of colour. How dare they discuss anything about women, period, and our identity. It was so unbalanced - I think it must have been deliberate to have no natal women.

CoolCarrie · 10/10/2018 23:24

Can anyone share the piece at all?

Binglebong · 10/10/2018 23:25

Of course not. Because people might be confused why the billboard is an issue - they don't want to draw attention to that. While with this one it just shows how silly the little feminists are. Bless.

Binglebong · 10/10/2018 23:26

Don't be silly - they won't discuss periods. They're icky! And transphobic and excluding.

Charliethefeminist · 10/10/2018 23:28

Having read this, and knowing of Sophie Cook, I do not think a single viewer who is not already a trans advocate would not have thought 'what the fuck'. These things serve to expose what we are up against.

WTFisawomxn · 10/10/2018 23:28

The general public will hopefully still be able to connect some dots. Trans activists first object to the dictionary definition, and then they have a trans woman on to say that re-writing the word womxn is actually fine and inclusive. Fingers crossed even this coverage will mean some people are waking up.

elephantoverthehill · 10/10/2018 23:29

However the piece in the programme was about how and why the Wellcome Trust get it wrong with 'Womxn'. It was the explanation as to why was so awful.

ErrolTheDragon · 10/10/2018 23:30

Just said women doesn't include transwomen...

Women includes:
Black women,White women,Any other colour women
Tall women,Short women
Thin women,Fat women
Daft women,Clever women
Young women,Old women,Middle aged women
Impoverished women,Middle income women,Filthy rich women
Working class women, middle class women, upper class women - Ladies!
Right wing women, left wing women, centrist women, apolitical women
Women with children, women with none.

Women is a perfectly inclusive word for all adult human females. Because that's what the word means, no more but certainly no less.

elephantoverthehill · 10/10/2018 23:30

*got

WTFisawomxn · 10/10/2018 23:31

There is a lot of resentment towards "feminist overreach," which has been mainly driven by liberal feminists. If the public understands that many on the gender-critical side are just ordinary women trying to have a voice, then we stand a better chance. That's why Posie is so powerful.

Fucking hell. I've now just watched the clip: twitter.com/BBCNewsnight/status/1050147429251575811

Jaw on the floor.

Interviewer getting tangled up in the whole 'define as, define' madness.

Chummily talking about the huge offence that a new word has just cause to women with a male who 'identifies' as a woman

Don't @ me MNHQ, and thread watchers/reporters.

This is what it is, we're at that stage now.

If I get a deletion, it is because I am not allowed to define myself away from a male who 'identifies'as a woman and is speaking for 'women' on a national platform, with another man, about why some people (AKA WOMEN) might be offended by the term womxn.

And if you delete me for saying the above about Sophie, why would you not delete people for saying the same thing about Karen White, Jacinta? Where is the line?

Overstating · 10/10/2018 23:33

BTW I think Sophie said 'womyn' was used by white middle class feminists and excluded women of colour, not 'women'. That segment was a travesty but I'm not sure I'd major on that comment to complain about. I don't care if one made up spelling is ditched. I do care that another is imposed.

Destinysdaughter · 10/10/2018 23:34

It’s on Twitter. You should be able to watch it from this link

twitter.com/bbcnewsnight/status/1050147429251575811?s=21

BreconBeBuggered · 10/10/2018 23:37

Had never heard of womxn before and am none the wiser now. As for the reaction of the wider public, if DH's comments are anything to go by, they'll be wondering why two blokes were talking about how to spell 'women' and why the fuck it came up on Newsnight.

HumberElla · 10/10/2018 23:38

There was definitely an attempt to make this protest about words sound all complicated and academic and feminist infighting. Which was then dismissed with ‘trans women don’t mind the term women’ (TWAW). And being kind.
That felt very uncomfortable for me.

elephantoverthehill · 10/10/2018 23:38

Brecon Grin

PineappleSunrise · 10/10/2018 23:39

LMFAO. Could Newsnight have made themselves any less credible?

WTFisawomxn · 10/10/2018 23:39

At what point did people whose job it is to communicate abandon principles like plain English, clear definitions, and standard spelling?

OP posts:
ErrolTheDragon · 10/10/2018 23:44

Slight side issue perhaps:
Was 'womyn' not inclusive of black women anyway? (merely because it was coined by white MC women doesn't automatically make it soHmm)
Google suggests not all black women think that eg there's a film

CallingDannyBoy · 10/10/2018 23:45

I thought it was quite amusing when the camera pulled back right at the start of the interview and it showed that Cook was much bigger & taller than the presenter. They went much further back than normal and showed the absurdity of it. However after that and trying to appropriate women of colour into their garbled explanation was really annoying.
